Papa. "But how about the trees my

HE WAS STRUCK,
-A clerk in a grocery, who had been
greatly annoyed by the boys pilfering
from samples at the door, saw a /0 -
year -old pocketing apples. He could
not catch the young pilferer, and in
his indignation lie called out
"Boy, if ever I get hold of ypu, I'll
breakever rib in your body."
"Will, eI?"
I "Yes, I will 1
"I'll tell you what I'll do, and the
First National bank will back me," said
the boy, as he came a little nearer.
"I'll bet you $10 you can't tell how
many ribs a human being has. Now
put up if you dare 1"
The clerk looked just like a man who
had been. asked a hard question, as he
went back into the store and began to
hunt for a medical almanac.
TWICE DEFEATED.
The urchin was communicative, and
his tale ran in this wise: "It's been
dandy sliding lately, an' Jilnrny, an'
Tom was agoiu' slidin' after school
Thursday afternoon, Jimmie, he'd
hooked his big brother's double runner,
and he was going to have a,hully tune,.
But along towards night the teacher
she caught us a whisperin'- and says
she: 'You three boys can stay with me
after school to -night,' and holly glee"
she kept us moie'n an bout', and it was
plump dark when we got oif,'arid t.hef •
we -couldn't go slidin 'cause Chailie—
that's Jimmie's big brother—wanted
his double -runner to take his girl to
slide."
"That was tough," interrupted his
hearer.
"Yes," said the urchin, "but that
ain't all. Next foi enoou we heard. the
teacher and her young man a-planuin'
to go slidin' right atter school that
night, so we put up ee job. We be-
haved first rate till 'long in the after-
noon, an' then we commenced to cut
up like the dickens, an' she caught us
and ipade--"
"Yes," broke in his hearer again:
"pretty good scheme, by jove! And
so the teacher kept you after school,
and didn't keep her engagement with
the young man, and that made 'ens
quarrel, and now they don't speak any
more? Great scheme for revenge!'
"NO, not by a long chalk," said the
youth, as apained expression of recol-
lection swept across his face. "That's
what we thought'd happen, but it did
not. No, sir 1 she- caught us carryin'
on', an' she just yanked us onto the
floor, an' gave us the-all:liredest lickin'
we ever had. No, sir; that scheme did
not work. Give us a nickel, won't yer?
we want to buy some snap -matches to
put under her desk."

BUILDING A HOUSE OF BUTTONS,
Clapisson, the French musical celebrity,
is building a chateau composed entirely of
buttons. The walls, the ceilings, the
doors, the exterior, the interior, are all
ornamented with this novel element of
architecture. Buttonsoj every desol',ption,
from the very origin of their.invent@onup
to those of the present day, have been em-
ployed in the arabesques and ornamentation
of the walls.. Every country has been ran-
sacked and some .curiJu; specimens have
been brought to light. Those datitg from
the lower Greek empire are of the most
curious manufacture.

DOGS OF MOUNT ST. BERNARD.
Near to the top of the great St. Bern
Mountains, in one of the most danger
passages of the Alps, between Switzeri
and Savoy, is situated a convent.
monks who live there are most hospita
and always take in travellers who see
shelter, for in high regions a shelter
often needed. Even when the day lo
bright and clear, a storm comes sudde
on, the snow falls think and fast, and
traveller cannot see a foot before hi
By -and• by he gets benumbed with the o
and sinks in the snow. He would soon
if no help reached him.
But the monks of St. Bernard go out
such stormy days, end look for any str
gers who may be in need of help. Besid
they have some noble dogs who are train
to seek for people in the snow. The mon
fasten a small flask of spirits around t
• dog's neck, in oase the lost traveller shou
have energy enough to open it, a
refresh himself; they often fasten a war
rug ever the dog's back, that the man m
wrap himself in it.
The keen scent of the dogs soon enabl
them to find any lost people, even if th
are buried deep in the snow. They Beret
away the snow with their feet, and bar
loudly to bring the monks of the convent
their assistance.
One of these dogs found a child unhur
whose mother had been destroyed by a
avalanche; he managed to drag the boy t
the convent door, and there by barking an
whining brought the monk out, who carrie
the perishing boy to the fire, and afte
great exertion, saved his life.

From the Riohibucto, N. B., Review.
The attention of The Review having
been called to two oases in Kingston in
which it was alleged remarkable cures
had been effected by the use of Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills, a reporter was sent to
interview the parties named,, and find out
whether the cures were really the result of
the use of Pink Pills. Mr. Samuel Bar-
nes, who formerly resided in Dorchester,
N. B., and who removed to Kingston, Kent
Co., some time ago, was first interviewed,
and asked whether .the reports concerning
his illness and his recovery from the use of
these pills were true. He expressed him-
self willing to add his testimony to the
many he saw in the papers concerning the.
wonderful cures effected by Pink Pills. and
hoped his story might be the means of
bringing relief to others. We give his
story as nearly as possible in his own
words :—"i was first attacked with acute
muscular rhumatism In March, 1891. I
was then Hiring in Dorgbeeter, For three
months I lay in .bed unable to move hand
or foot, more helpless than an infant. The
joints .of my arms and lege were much
swollen, aril my/hands and finger twisted
almost oat of sl ape. The physician who
attended me bandaged my limbs and in
every way attempted to give me relief, but
without effect. Two other doctors were
called in consultation, but could do noth-
ing for me: I was told by a friend who
called to see me of the wonderful cures re-
ported to have been effected by the use of
Pink Pills, and I resolved to'cast aside doc-
tors' medicine, and give the pills a trial.
When I had about half finished the second
box I began to feel lilirhtly better. After
taking four or five boxos T was able to get
out of bed and walk around the house on
crutches. I continued taking the pills un-
til I had taken a dozen boxes, when I stop •
ped for a time. I was then able with the
help of crutches to get Out of doors and
around. I have siuue removed to Kingston,
and continued taking the pills, and have
continued to improve and hope soon to be
entirely cured. Mr Barnes is a gentleman
of education, whose statements will carry
weight. The writer remembers when Mr
Barnes first came to Kingston he was forc-
ed to use crutch( s. and was able to get
around only with great difficulty. He is
able to be around using only a cane, and
apparently without any difficulty. His
hands and ringers, however, still bear traces
of the severe suffering he has undergone.
His sistaF, Mrs John Taylor, was also
a sufferer from muscular rheumatism,
She was first attacked by the disease eight
years ago, and at that time it was only
with great difficulty she was able to move
around. Doctor's medicine did not help
her, and she tried all kinds of so-called
cures for rheumatism, but they appeared
to do her no good whatever. Through the
advice of Mr Barnes and with the consent
of her physician, she began taking Pink
Pills last fall. By the time she had finish-
) ed the second box she felt decidedly im-
proved. She has now finished her fourth
box, and is apparently as well as she ever
was. She said she was perfectly ,willing
that the'public should know that she was a
firm believer in the efficacy of Pink Pills.
The improvement wrought by these pills
in the case of Mr Barnes had first induced
her to give them atrial, and . she was now
satisfied that the pills possessed wonderful
curative ; owtra.
Dr Williams' Pink Pills are a specific
for all diseases arising from an impover-
ished condition of the blood or a shattered
condition of the nervous forces, snob as St.

A YOUNG CANADIAN RABITAN
BOY'S SLED.
Among the young habitan boys of
the mountainous district of Quebec, a
little sled is used which is so novel and
simple in construction, and affords such
famous sport on the steep mountain
roads, that I am certain its introduc,
tion to the boy and girl readers of
Harper's Young People will be heartily
welcomed. Any boy can construct one
in a few moments, and the cost is prac-
tically nothing.
A good smooth stave from a barrel
having been procured, an upright bunk
about twelve inches high is securely
nailed to it. On the top of anis bunk a
seat is nailed. This may be also a piece
of barrel stave about fifteen inches
long. The sled is now complete.
Now for a slide down some small hill
td begin with. Seated on the bunk
seat, both hands holding the ends of
the seat, and both feet touching the
snow to hell) balance the little craft
and to steer it, away you go. Such an
exciting run, such fun, so easily guided
and controlled, no danger, fur a firm
pressure of the feet on the snow brings
the little craft to a•standstill at will,
and as it, weighs but a pound, it is so
easily carried up hill.
I have seen these little sleds used by
boys and girls of five or six years of
age, on the roughest and steepest
mountain sides on the snow -crust, and
they were always under such perfect
control that I never heard of an acci-
dent.
Twenty or more of these little craft
can be made from one barrel, with a
pound of three-inch nails.—Harper's
Young People.
