IT 18 THE SAME OLIVER?
Stratford Herald.
The Woodstock Sentinel -Review fair-
ly writhes with indignation as it, recol-
lects "with what indecent falsity the
Conservative papers endeavored to
hold Sir Oliver Mowat up as a friend of
the fallen count,” etc. Perhaps our es-
teemed contemporary alludes to a
different Oliver Mowat from the one
who plotted with Mercier at theQue bec
conference in 1877, and who penned
this telegram after Mercier's triumph
in the Riel campaign
"•Penetangguishene, Oct. 16, 1886.—To
the Hon. H. Mercier, M. P. P., Mon-
treal : Have just received here the joy-
ful news of your great triumph. I con-
gratulate you and all your friends on
your important victory ; may your
premiership be a long one and full of
Titdvantage to your province and the
Dominion, and of honor to yourself.

There will he lively times at the
annual school meeting in section No. 9,
where the teacher, who figured in an
unenviable light at the late assize
court, is again teacher. A number of
the ratepayers think that his useful-
ness as a teacher is to a certain extent
gone. He, however, holds on to the
position with a tenacity unparalelled
in the annals of school affairs in this
district.

The County Court and General Ses-
sions of the Peace opened on Monday
week last before His Honor Judge
Doyle, who presided in the absence of
Judge Toms through illness.
The following were sworn in as the
grand jury: Henry Hawley, W. H.
Elliott, Goderich; John Dalton, Rich-
ard Finlay, James W. Hunter, Richard
E. Lane, Ashfield; John Dodds, Sea -
forth; Wm. B. Foster, Colborne; S.

den, McKillop; Dominick `'.Reynolds,
Dan Shanahan, Mullett.
The 'following civil cases were ars-'
pesod of :
McKenzie vs. Brownley, an action
for money lent. This was a jury case,
but after the hearing of some of the
evidence Flis Honor ruled that this
court had not jurisdiction to entertain
the action, but he reserved the ques-
tion of costs. R. H. Collins for plff; J.
T. Garrow for deft.
McKenzie vs. Sherwood, was an ac-
tion for conversion of a promissory
note. The plff. had some years ago
.been convicted of uttering counterfeit
money, and sent to Kingston for four
years. The defendant, who is commis-
sioner of Dominion police, took posses-
sion of some papers found on McKenzie,
among them being a promissory note,
which was claimed was never returned
but the defence was that the note was
returned,,with the other papers to Mc-
Kenzie'stocicitor, Mr. Lister, Q. C., of
°Sarnia. After trial the jury gave judg-
ment for the defence, and the action
was dismissed with costs. R. H. Col-
lins for plff.; E. Campion, Q. C., for
deft. -
Murdock vs. O'Neil, an action for the
price of a stock ofgcids, was settled be-
tween the parties.
Charlesworth vs. own.—Action on

failed to agree, and (vere discharged.
Garrow, Q. C., for plff.; Creasor for
deft.
Clark vs. Township of Hay Mutual
Fire Ins. Co.—Action on policy of in-
surance. By concept of counsel His
Honor diricted that judgment be enter-
ed for plff. forthwith for $100 and full
county court costs. Garrow & Proud-
foot for plff; Collins for deft.
Browning vs. Browning—Action for
conversion of personal property and
clothing brought by a daughter of Dr.
Browning, of .Exeter against her father.
By consent of counsel His Honor
directed that judgment be entered
for hwith for the return by defendant
to the plaintiff, of the goods and
chattels mentioned in the particulars, if
defendant has all the goods. if not, he
shall return what, he has. No costs to
either party. Collins for pllt; Proud -
foot for deft.
David Bell and Frank Sandsrson
were indicted before the grand jury
for perjury, in connection with recent
liquor cases tried at Clinton. No bill
was found against either of the accus-
ed.
A true bill was found against
Stephen Hogarth, of Stephen, for inde-
cent assault and doing grievous bodily
harm to Mrs. Charlotte McGahey, an
Indian Woman, who resides in that
section. As the crown was not ready
for trial the cases were traversed to the
June sessions of 1894.
And so old Thomas Gibson is the
Grit candidate again for East Huron.
The name of Mr. Kerr, of the Brussels
Post, was mentioned, but then no
Methodist will get a Reform nomina-
tion in the county of Huron. It is just
as well for them to thoroughly under-
stand that.
