The Christmas 'tree and entertain- ment held in Turner's church on the 22nd was the best of anything of the kind that has been given in this church. Refreshments were served in the base- ment from seven to eight after which a good and lengthy programme, con- sisting of readings, singing, etc., was rendered. Rev. Me. Smythe and Rev. Mr. Galloway took part. Santa Claus was on hand to distribute the pres- ents. A small admission was charged for tate benefit of S. S. - Nomination of Councillors, etc., was held at Brucefield on the 22nd. Robert Holmes, of the New Era, very acceptably filled the pulpit of Turner's church on Sunday week. McKillop. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gray will be pleased to learn that they are recovering from a severe attack of la grippe. There will he lively times at the annual school meeting in section No. 9, where the teacher, who figured in an unenviable light at the late assize court, is again teacher. A number of the ratepayers think that his useful- ness as a teacher is to a certain extent gone. He, however, holds on to the position with a tenacity unparalelled in the annals of school affairs in this district. We hope that the people of this county will not forget on the first of January that it is their Fluty to provide a house of refuge for our aged and un- fortunate ones. Mr. Fred Keeler is preparing mater- ial with the intention of erectinga new barn next summer. The County Court and General Ses- sions of the Peace opened on Monday week last before His Honor Judge Doyle, who presided in the absence of Judge Toms through illness. Collins for plff; J. T. Garrow for deft. McKenzie vs. Sherwood, was an ac- tion for conversion of a promissory note. The plff. had some years ago .been convicted of uttering counterfeit money, and sent to Kingston for four years. The defendant, who is commis- sioner of Dominion police, took posses- sion of some papers found on McKenzie, among them being a promissory note, which was claimed was never returned but the defence was that the note was returned,,with the other papers to Mc- Kenzie'stocicitor, Mr. Lister, Q. No costs to either party. Collins for pllt; Proud - foot for deft. David Bell and Frank Sandsrson were indicted before the grand jury for perjury, in connection with recent liquor cases tried at Clinton. No bill was found against either of the accus- ed. A true bill was found against Stephen Hogarth, of Stephen, for inde- cent assault and doing grievous bodily harm to Mrs. Charlotte McGahey, an Indian Woman, who resides in that section. As the crown was not ready for trial the cases were traversed to the June sessions of 1894. And so old Thomas Gibson is the Grit candidate again for East Huron. The name of Mr. Kerr, of the Brussels Post, was mentioned, but then no Methodist will get a Reform nomina- tion in the county of Huron. It is just as well for them to thoroughly under- stand that.
