HE BREEDS SKUNKS.
There is a man who lives near St.
Clairsvilel Ohio, that makes a regular
business of breeding polecats and
makes some looney out of it. This
year he will raise more than 100. The
animals are fed on bread, milk, mush
and meat; they are very tameauddocile,
and enjoy being petted by their owner.
It is said that they ernit no disagreeable
odor. The breeder raises there for
their fur, which brings •$1.25 a skin,
and for an oil, which he renders from
the cart'asses, and which brings a high
price. He has sold a great nlanv for
household pets. They are intelligent
and easily trained, and make good
ratters and mousers. The animal is
larger and more beautiful' than a eat,
its hair beinglong and silky, tool its
curling tail giving it a jaunty and rich
appearance.

MARRIED IN SWEDEN,
•
A BERLIN (GIRL TRAVELS 4,000 MILES TO
(.ET MARRIED.
Berlin Rtcord.
The marriage of Miss May Simpson,
of Berlin, and Tor Falk of Stockholm,
Sweden, took place in Stockholm on
Nov. 14. It will be remembered that
Miss Simpson sailed for Europe as
early as Oct. 7th and reached Stock-
holm on the 24th. The Swedish con-
ception of a marriage is somewhat..
different from the Canadian, and a
wedding has to be proceeded by many
legal and religious formalities quite un-
necessary here. Our speedy and con-
venient American, or even Canadian
marriages, are things objected to and
impossible in Sweden. These custom-
ary preliminaries therefore delayed the
marriage in .this case for three weeks.
The wedding was a private one. At 5
p. M. the guests, 18 in ntnnlwr, _assem-
bled in the drawing i•oorn of Edward
Falk, father of the groom. The bride
was led in by her prospective father-in-
law. She was dressed in white silk and
carried a bouquet of flower's. It is the
e'ustom in Sweden for all the guests to
give the br'Rlc flowers. The (ereniony
was performed by Rev. Alfred Wis-
snell, of the Swedish National church,
and was, of course, in Swedish; but
Miss Simpson was by this time suffi-
ciently at home in the Swedish lan-
guage to understand it.
Irnmediately after the ceremony the
guests retired to a sumptuous repast,
such as only the hearts and the hospit-
able Scandinavians can prepare. Toasts
followed in nulnbers, led off by Rev.
Mr. Wissnell.- He was followed by
Pastor Bja'i'ck who spoke in English.
He congratulated the bride on her
bravery in coming all the way to
Sweden to be married and referred
kindly to the many friends she had left
behind in Canada. At the conclusion
of the toasts the bride was called upon
to say a few words in English. This
she did with almost as .little fear as
she exhibited in facing a, sea voyage of
4,000 miles. Her speech was translated
into Swedish by one of the guests[and
seemed by the applause to give most
general satisfaction, and to no one
more than Tor Falk himeelf,1 whose
pride in his Canadian wife knew no
bounds. Congratulatory telegrams
were received all evening. The pro•
sents from both Canadian and Swedish
friends were many and costly.

PROPER CARE OF HARNESS.
v
It Will Pay the 1?'arrner as Well as the
Liveryman to Care for His Harness.
Somefarmers pay little attention to
the proper care of their harness, devoting
less attention to it than liver•yitten, cab
and hack drivers, who attend to this
matter because it pays them well to do
so. It is not a rare sight to see a farmer's
heavy draught and single harness that
have been used for several years without
a drop of any lubricant touching them
since they came from the dealer's bands.
All the leather portion is hard and brittle
and presents a dull appearance. If used
during a shower, the parts that are rubbed
look more like porous sole leather than
an oak -tanned article. Such treatment
shortens the life and usefulness of the
harness at least one-half ; whereas. a few
cents' worth of oil and two orthree
hours' time each year would not only
make the harness far more present-
able, but add to its usefulness, and what
is of greater importance, to its safety.
Do not hang the harness in a horse
stable. The ammonia arising from the
urine is very destructive to leather of
any' kind. Before oiling the harness, re-
move all dirt and dandruff by thorough-
ly washing with strong castile soap suds.
The harness should be taken apart be-
fore commencing operations. Choose a
warns day, if done out of doors, or work
near a stove if indoors. As soon as dry,
any of the harness oils may be applied
with a woolen cloth, or soft sponge,
using .care to saturate every portion.
After each strap Ilas been oiled, bend it
back and forth, thereby introducing the
oil to the very center of each strap. If
not previously oiled for a lotus time, a
° second application should be given,
and after a few hours go over
with a dry cloth, removing all that
has not been absorbed. In place of the
usual neat's-foot or petroleum harness
oil, melted lard free front salt, or even
unsalted butter, may be used. It is
better still to boil up the broken shin
bones of a beef. The marrow, and what
tallow there may be, will make a most
valuable dressing of almost the con-
sistency of oil, and may be bottled for
future use. - If a color be desired, add a
little lampblack. This will prove
equally' efficacious as. a dressing for
boots end shoes. Fifty cents' worth of
these shin bones, obtained of any butcher,
,will yield enough neat's-foot oil to last
several years.
A Hog or Calf Pen.
Our illustration shows an idea for a
hog or calf pen and is a building that is
neat and substantial for its purpose. It
is 3 ft. long, 7 ft. wide, 4 ft. in rear and
6 ft. in front. It is built to accommo-
date five sows and pigs, each pen being
6x7 ft., ample for a litter of pigs with
their parent pig. On all sides of the in -
closure, as illustrated by Fig. 3, is a
board fastened to the posts far enough
away from the sides to enable the little
pig to avoid being crushed by the old
sow, as is often the case. It can get in
between this board and the side wall
and cannot be injured in the least. It
le an excellent arrangement and should
be tried to prove its value to any farmer
who keeps hogs. It may be converted
into a house for young calves wiles not
in use for pigs and a trough for milk can
be put into each compartment. Three
illustrations of the house are shown,
Fig. 2 being the rear of the building,
Fig. 3 the interior. --J. W. C.
