THE POOR PEOPLE OF CANADA.
Parole Canadian,
The Canadian recently drew the at-
tention of these Grits who are ever-
lastingly preaching about the poverty
of this country, to the very large pro-
portion of the Canadian people who felt
themselves well enough off to visit the
great fair. We note that the Chicago
papers fn figuring up the results esti-
mate the amount of money spent in the
city during the season by Canadian vis-
itors at five million dollars. Add rail-
way fare to that, and you make a total
of seven and a half millions. People
who can spend money like that to enjoy
a summer holiday must consider them-
selves in some slight degree removed
from the immediate danger of starva-
tion.

A. Confident Prisoner,
It was a case of chicken stealing, and
the prints of bare feet were found in the
gravel around the henhouse. The lawyer
for the prosecution was one who if he
had been a Napoleon never would have
crossed the Alps. He would simply
have pulled them up by the roots and
thrown them over the fence. The pris-
oner was an'`bnknown tramp and latae
at that.
4'You say you don't know anything
about this theft?"
"That's what I swore to, sir," said the
tramp, meekly.
"You were in the back yard at Slam-
tiptt's house about supper time?"
"Yes, sir,"
"You knew the location of the hon -
house?"
"Yes, sir."
"You were seen on the road in front
of the house some time after dark?"
"I was there, sir."
"You were in the yard after dark?''
"Yes, sir, and after supper also, sir,",
replied the prisoner with a Ivan smile at
his innocent little joke in such a place.
-'And you were Been by tliccook sit-
ting on the doorstep with your shoes
off?"
'Yes, sir ; there was a pebble in it
that .vas too nig to get out of the same
hole it got in at."
"Now, sir. I propose to prove that you
made these tracks with your hare feet
while. you were stealing the chickens of
the plaintiff."
"You can't do it, sir," said the prison-
er, mildly but firmly.
"And why not, pray ?" asked the law-
yer with fine sarcasm.
"Because, sir, I've one wooden leg,
sir," and he gave a. kick that sent it
clean across the court room and almost
knocked a constable senseless. -Pitts-
burg Chronicle -Telegraph.
Personal heaven,
The Eastern visiting minister was
preaching to a Colorado congregation on
the New Jerusalem.
"And," he was saying, "the streets are
paved with gold-"
"Don't insist on that," interrupted the
local preacher in a whisper, as he pulled
his coat tails. "Don't insist on that if
you expect to get any i'oncnigrants for
heaven, because this congregation is for
silver every day in the year, and gold is
pizen to them." -Detroit Free Press.
A Good Laugh In Store.
Winks -Come along, old boy, I've got
two complimentary tickets for a dramatic
performance.
Jinks -Tragedy or comedy?
"Tragedy."
"I don't like tragedies. They appeal
so strongly to one's sympathies that I
always feel blue for a week."
"This one won't. You'll •come home
as jolly es if you had been to a circus.
It's by an amateur company." -Tit -Bits.
Why He Remained.
It was getting late, but Algernon
Charles had not his watch with him.
There was a clock on the mantel, but it
was out of the range of his vision.
"What time is it by that clock, Miss
Bellfield'?" he asked. "I can't see it
distinctly."
"Oh, that clock doesn't go," replied
the maiden.
"Doesn't it? Then I won't, either."
And he stayed one hour and fifteen
minutes longer, estimated time. -Pitts-
burg Telegram.
They Didn't Know Whore They Wore,
I took an electric launch to go to the
Fisheries Building. A man and his wife
sat by my side. They were studying a
map of. the Fair. They would look up
at the different buildings to see if they
agreed with the map. They could not
tell. Finally the man said :
"Well, we will have to find out first
where the lagoon is, I think I will ask
the man at the wheel."
The pilot told hien that they were, rid -
