—Hamilton Spectator : Last eve-
ning in Knox church, Rev. Dr. Fraser
solemnly announced that the funeral of
an esteemed young member of the
congregation, Charles Groves, would
take place on Tuesday. Tho announce -
was heard with surprise by the congre-
gation, and consternation by one per-
son, that person being Charles Groves
himself. No news of his own death
had reached Mr. Groves until that
moment, when he heard his funeral
announced, and his surprise may be
imagined. The mistake was not an un-
natural one. The funeral which was
to be announced is that of a young
man marred Stoupes, a cousin of Mr.
Groves, who died in the northwest, and
is to be brought home for burial. Dr.
Fraser read the announcement hast-

on an excursion, and after being in the
Windy City a couple of days he died.
His friends had hint coffinetl and put
him in the baggage car, and wanted to

refused to accept it, stating that they

ship, took a Close of Paris Green from
the effects of which he died on Satur-
day afternoon, at 4 o'clock. Deceased
was a widower, with one child, a young

day, Next morning when his mother
went to his room to call him she found

and "used -up" feeling is the first warn
ing that your liver isn't doing its work.
And, with a torpid liver and the im-

It rouses every organ into healthful

VOT'ERS' LIS'T'S COST'.
It is no use disguising the fact that it
careful preparation of either the On-
tario or Dominion Voter's Lists is.both
difficult and expensive. Just no y he
Ontario Lists are in the throes 6f pre-
paration and agents aro employed to
scour the municipalities to catch the
"chap who came hero after the assess-
ment," or the other quiet individual
who objects to paying°poll tax and who
never comes of age until he wants to
vote. All this is expensive work.
Agents do not give their time and
travel night and day for the pure love
of their party, nor though politics
may be about as high as they ever aim,
do they feel that a captured vote is
sufficient recompense for days waited
in chasing an escaped individual into
a fence corner and clubbing hint into
an agreement to "appear in person
before the Judge." It may he an un-
palatable suggestion, but it would stop
much of this work if the law 'was
amended so as to base the lists entirely
upon the Asseslnent Rolls and make
them begin and end there. If a name,
poll tax or assessed, was not there, the
owner of that name Must stand by and
see other • men marching like British
subjects to the poll to demonstrate
their holding the franchise ; or what
would be quite as irritating, stand by
and see his neighbor cajoled by first
one party and then another, as "dress-
ed in a little brief authority" he pro-
claimed from the_ street corner that he
"had not voted yet." The thing is a
farce, for an agent only knows the
antecedents' of most of those he asks
to have put on the lists, and so long as
he secures a substantial list, he smiles
the smile of triumph, claims he has
saved his party from a desolate politi-
cal grave and cares very little whether
those put on vote for or against that
party.—Galt Reporter.

change. Of course the consistent man
can never be a progressive man, but
there is that sudden wheeling about
which is startling. As an instance, a
gentleman inet Sir Richard Cartwright
taking a promenade in the main street
of Napanee the other day and accosted
him : "You, as an annexationist, Sir
Richard—" " Sir—r—r," thundered
the Knight, and he turned so fiercely
upon his friend that the starboard
prong of his sharply waxed moustache
nearly put his eye out.
That deep, dark tragedy which
was committed near New Bliss i in the
Township of Kitley over a year ago
and which has given rise to an hn-
mence amount of speculation its to
how it occurred, has at last reached a
solution, that is as far as twelve good
and true citizens, from hearing all the
evidence that could de produced for the
Crown and defence, could render a
verdict. That verdict is that Charles
Luckey is guilty of the crime of
murdering his sister Mary Ann Luckey,
and, as a matter of course, also his
father, K. J. Luckey, and his step-
mother. The particulars of the case
are so fresh in the minds of the public
generally that it is not necessary to
repeat thein. The case was commenced
on Tuesday afternoon of last week
and dragged its weary- way along
until about 6.45 o'clock in the
evening. The jury, which had sat
so -long and patiently on the
case and given as strict attention as any
jury could do with the evidence
brought in a verdict of "Guilty."
Charles Luckey is doomed to be hanged
in the jail yard of the town of Brock-
ville at 7.80 on the mottling of Thurs-
day, December 14. There was no
