A man once gave this apTparently ambiguous maxim to his children: "If you cannot be great in this world, pay attention." • The first boy went away for a 'day, and when he returned home he had procured a place in a mercantile store. "How did you get it?" asked his father. "Nell, 1 remembered to pay atten- tion, and I saw the man look at my hat, which was on my head, so I took , it, off and put it.under my arm." "What then, son ?" "The man said : 'Right, any boy,' and hired Inc." "So you were paid for being polite." said the father, with much satisfaction. "Attention," said Lowell,' "is the stuff out of which memory is made." The large things of this life will take care of themselves—it is the little things that count. We grow and iln- prove by paying'attentiou to the affairs of life, the habits of good society, the manners of the educated :int refined. There is a story called "A Window of Tin.us," the work of at popular author, There is a character in it named "Leeby," of when her friends said.: "It's a pity she can't snake use of her eyes, if not of her tongue," and they rated her for having her eyes cast clown, and net seeing or hearing what was going•on. Yet she was the only one who saw there was "nae carpet below the vaxcloth," in the manse; "joist a poker in the fire-place—nae tongs." And the minister's new wife: "She. wears ,her hair low on the left side to hide a scar, and there's two warts on her right hand." She had paid attention to her surroundings and was full of mental notes. To pay attention to the speaker is the highest compliment that can be paid. It saves one the mortification of being told of the fine points that were missed. It was this faculty that made Ithe Dutch painters great artists. I have a bay in my barn 25 by 35 feet with 18 ft. posts. I cut out the centre of the hay of solid hay a hole of 15 feet, which will leave 7 ft, of solid hay on the sides. I also leave about 2 ft, of hay in the bottom of the hole. The hay taken from the hole can betput on the top and bund the sides, or if a press 18 handy may be baled. I then set boards all around the inside as close as I can get them together e and nail them to a board g ar d put in crosswise. I am then ready to fill.' I put my corn in whole as I think it is just as good and a saving in the buying of machinery for cutting. I use a horse fork for unloading and have a' man in the hole' to lay it straight, preferring to have it laid lock fashion. Otherwise I proceed as others do with regularly built silos. The corn invariably comes out all right and affords a cheap ensilage.—(M. B. Spen- cer, Montgomery county, N. Y. $50 :DOLLARS A YEAR FOn LIFE.
