SIR RICHARD DISCOVERED.
Ymtroal Star.
It is now stated that Sir Richard
Cartwright has announced a series of
six ineetin gs,• in which he will address
his South Oxford constituents.
Surely an enemy hath done this ! It
cannot be that, after maintaining a
Napoleon -at -St. -Helena sort of silence
while Mr. Laurier and the whole retinue
of Ontario Liberals were travelling up
and down the province Sir Richard is
to appear alone upon the narrow stage
of his own constituency, for all the
world like a Casey or a Sproule, edu-
cating his immediate supporters. Sir
Richard is not a mere human peg to
hold down one petty constituency. He
is the leader of a province. This the
party recogpizes by providing hint with
a comfortable Grit `hive," so that he
may devote the whole of his talents to
the task of encouraging and "enthus-
ing" the rank -and -file, and generally
radiating genial warmth and optimistic
courage throughout the province. His
experience has shown, too, that a man
ca,ilnut be it steam -radiator and a peg
at the same time. Wheel he first went
into the general leadership business, he
was doing duty as a "peg," holding
down the conhtituency of Lennox and
Addington. But while he was away
from home 'attending to the finances of
the country and spreading joy among
his followers, Lennox and Addington
worked loose froul the peg in a most
disasterous manner. itis reputation is
not that -of a mere grabber and keeper
of constituencies. It satisfies only
common men to get a seat for thelil-
selves; rind Sir Rieliard is not a colu-
Inon clan.
Then why this local attention to
South Oxford ? The • riding is not
thought to be unsafe. His majority
there in '91 was 73-1; and that was a bad
year. In '87, it stood 1112. • Now when
Mr. Edgar or Mr. Mills desire to Slake
a few remarks to the whole country,
they do so by trapping an unwary
audience in solve innocent looking
school -house in their riding, and then
deliver a, political pronouncement,
which is fully reported in the press.
But Mr. Edgar and Mr. Mills are not
povinciai leaders. i\Ir. Laurier aitd Mr.
Davies (10 not enp]oy this direct method
of reaching the country. They organize
a party and go on a tour. And how long
since is it that Sir Richard Cartwright
hat- been classed with Mr. Eagan. and
Mr. Mills and not with Mr. Laurier and
Mr. Davies? Nor is the comparison
complete ; for Mr. Edgar and Mr. Mills
—yea, and bur. Charlton—appeared at
the Laurier meetings and Sir Richard
(lid not,
One thing at any rate this item of
news prormses tis; and that is the dis-
covery of the lost knight". The brooding
fear that he might have gone out of
politics Will be dispelled: for no man goes
out of politics by snaking six speeches in
one constit.uency—unless, Of course, an
election immediately follows. The
wicked and designing Tory Govern.
(hent Alight make a most successful
"coup" now by harrying on the general
eleations just as Sir Richard's halt -dozen
yards of indigo crape are cut off and de-
livered. Evert South Oxford 'tight not
stand this strain upon its loyalty. Oh I
pity the sorrows of a poor Grit hive I
e may likewise discover why the
financial side of the Liberal policy was
not presented to the electors during the
late tour—why Sir Richard's own pro•
vince was asked to make Sir Richard
pint leader of a, new Government, and
it Richard himself remained in exotic
obscurity. Has he lost interest in that
man ;Cartwright? Is he uncertain
whether he ever met, the party referred
to? Does he doubt front stories he has
heard of his financial policy and politi-
cal inlpolicy during the dark, deflcity
days prior to '78,whether this fellow
would snake a good Finance Minister
Or is it that he is huffed by this Cart-
wright's brusque manner and congeal-
ed exterior? By all means, let the Ox-
ford meetings begin as soon as the
Oxfordians have been given due time
to escape.

C.BIOAGO PAIR GAO. .
The young elan who spend their
afternoons in the rear of the cigar -store
which isresided over by do clerk
with the blond mustache were enjoying
themselves at the expense yf the fat
agent,
"Speaking about gulls," said the
clerk, "I saw the biggest revolver in
the world at the Fair.'
"Is that so ?" asked the fat agent.
"Biggest in the world, eh ? What was
it like ?"
"It was the Ferris wheel," replied the
clerk, and everybody but the agent
laughed. -
fThey tell me," said the man who
was smoking cheroots, "that some
people find it hard to get information
out there. I ran onto a place where
you can get points very easily."
"Where was it ?" asked the fat agent.
"At the pin -factory 'on the Plais-
ance," said the man who was smoking
cheroots, and everybody but the fat
agent laughed again.
Then there was a lull in the pro-
ceedings and the fat agent began to
talk business. "Say," he said, "I've
got a proposition to make to you. You
know the house I travel for and you
want to be their agents here. I am
authorized to say to you that if you
will contract to sell 10,009 a year of
each of our brands of cigars you can
have the agency."
"Huh 1" said the clerk with the blond
mustache, "that's easy. I guess we'll
accept that proposition."
The fat agent got out a contract and
laid it on the desk. "Sign here," he
said.
"By the way," said the clerk as he
dipped his pen into the inkstand, "how
many brands have you got ?"
"Three hundred and eighty," replied
the fat agent, simply.
And then everybody but ' the clerk
with the blond nioustache laughed.
THE PETRIFIED WOOD 3IAN.
It was a meek, Mild-mannered youth
that stood behind the Chicago exhibit
of petrified wood. There was a look
of agony on his face that seemed born
of fright. A visitor approached the
exhibit and the face of the mild-man-
nered young man grew ashen pale.
"Is this putrified wood ? " asked the
visitor.
"No, sir ; that is petrified wood." The
visitor withdrew. The next came.
"Mister, is this ossified wood?"
"No, sir; this is petrified wood."
The ashen gray on the youth's face was
growing more pronounced.
The listener understood the situation
now, and sympathized and drew near-
er.
"Wife, that is peterfied wood," ex-
plained an old fanner as he and his
better half passed by. '
"This isn't oxidized wood, is it?"
asked a schoolgirl next. The attend-
ant explained his exhibit as before.
"Is that galvanized wood ?" was the
next.
"No, madam, that is petrified wood."
The attendant was growing weaker.
"Is that perforated wood ?"
"No, sir, that is petrified wood."
"Is that the new cement we react
about ?"
"No, sir. that is petrified wood."
"Is that marbleized wood ?"
The attendant failed to answer. The
woman looked u, and seeing the
youth about to faint, produced her
smelling salts and the attendant re-
vived. But alas, thirty seconds only
elapsed before a gaunt countryman ap-
proached.
"Do you sell any seed to raise that
kind of wood ?"
This was a sight change, and the lad
in misery moved about and found some
small 'chips of the wood in the case,
which he sold to the gaunt countryman
for a consideration. But the exertion
onl • weakened hint the more.
"Vas that wood sawed and polished
before it was petrified ?"
"No, sir, I don't think it was." It
was evident that the young man
couldn't last long. The listener would
have helped hint if he could, but the
young man , had to stand the strain
alone. There was hopelessness un
every feature as one nio1•e anxious ad-
mirer cause up. -
"Was this word petrified especially
for the fair ?"
But the young man had fainted.
The nearest guard called an ambulance.
A crowd gathered about and cast pity-
ing glances as he was laid in the wagon.
He was taken to thehospital and the
trained nurses wondered what it all
meant as lie groaned in his delir•ituu,
"No, no, this is petrified wood."
No One now attends the exhibit, but
everywhere about may be seen the
legend in capital letters, "This Is
Petrified Wood."
OVER -RIPENED CREAM.
The main cause of poor butter, says
the dairy editor of the Iouis Homestead,
is over -ripening of the cream. Not
that this is the sole cause, for much of
the trouble is due to improper methods
of handling the milk in the first place,
churning too much and deficient
washing and working; but the more
We investigate the matter the more
firmly are we convinced that the state-
ment above made is true. The main
trouble is that when it takes level ail
days to collect enough cream to make
a churning the first cream becomes al-
together too sour before sufficient is
collected. The result is ;strong butter
that becomes rancid within a very
short time after being made.' Nor is
the poor quality of the butter the only
som•ce of loss, for when the cream is
allowed to become too ripe the loss of
fat in butter milk is excessive. The
obvious remedy is to keep all the cream
sweet until enouh is collected to make
a churning, This can be done by keei[p-
ing it in a cool place, not a very diffi-
cult ,natter from now on, although the
cream must not be allowed to freeze.
When there is enough to ehiitn it
should he removed to a'Mom where the
temperature is about sixty degrees and
allowed to ripen, being stirred as is con-
venient while the ripening process is
going on. When the cream has a
slightly acid taste and a very fine gran-
ular appearance it is ready for the
churn. It should not be thick nor
should it he sour as that term generally
is understood. It is impossible to make
first-class butter from cream that has
been allowed to sour until it has bedome
thickened, while the loss of fat in the
buttermilk from cream churned in this
condition will bo from five to ten times
as much as it ought to be. We urge
that more care be taken in ripening the
cream and preparing it for the churn.
