IN OPPOSITION TO THE P. P. A.
WIIAT ROMAN CATHOLICS IN ST. LOUIS
HAVE. ORGANIZED.
Some months ago, when the Ameri-
can or Protestant Protective Associa-
tion" reached St. Louis, it caused a
gooc1 Ileal of excitement. Some peo-
ple prophesied that the introduction
there world result in open war between
the members of the association and
the Rontan Catholi('s.
Some of the latter, however, came to
the conclusion the best tiring to do
would be to fight the new society in
its own way, and the result has been
the organization of an association styl-
ing itself "The Genuine American As-
sociation."
The objects of the associations are to
fight the A.Y.A. and to support the
Roman Catholics or Protestants who
are not partial to the A.P.A. for all
political and other positions.
The papers of St. Loris are, of
course, ivided over the matter. Some
of them contend that the new associa-
tion is the legitimate outcome of the
organization of the A.P.A.'s. Of the
opponents of the Genuine Americans
the Masonic Constellation is the most
outspoken. In its October issue it
says:
"The organization of an association
styling themselves `Genuine Ameri-
cans,composed, as claimed, of those
of every nationality and religion, but
squarely against the society known as
the A.Y.A. This paper, be it under-
stood, cares nothing for politics, but
can assure the Masonic Fraternity
that, this 'Genuine American' associa-
tion is composed of the rankest Catho-
lics, and none others need apply. That
obtaining Catholic control, not only its
St. Louis, but throughout the length
and breadth of the (•olrtltl'y, there'. ('a11
be no doubt. 'They propose organ iz ng
in every ward, after which, through-
out the State and Government. 'their
oath to support all constitutional laws
of the U. S. may be regarded as !Ms-
leading, inasmuch as they intend to
evade others, not yet passed upon.
The Supreme Body is to embrace the
U. S. and the Dominion of Canada. The
Grand Lodge being limited to States and
Prot:iiccs. Subordinate Lodges confin-
ed to wards or towns. They further
purpose boycotting all tvho employ or
countenance members of the A.P.A. or
Y.P.A. Among 'the charter members,
the names of whom are in possession of
not one hut would be ,recognized as of
I, Irish parentage. Our former highly
esteemed Mayor—E. A. Noonan—is re-
ported as exceeding active, even more
so than be was in endeavoring to dis-
grace Masonic Lodges."
Other papers, however, contend that
one association has just as much right
to exist as the other.
