thousands of lives have been destroyed

CURRENT 7OPICS.
The Globe is still "sticking to a lie'
concerning Mr. Liurier'a heckling on
the temperance question.
More than seven hundred thousand
people visited the World's Fair on
Chicago's day. It was nearly morn-
ing before the grounds were cleared of
the immense 'crowd.
Toronto News: -Chicago people can
not feel edified over the announcement
given to the world that the literal
moaning of tho name their city beare
is "Where the skunk dwells."
In Canada's last famous murder case
the accused was "John Reginald" Bir-
chall, In the present one the prisoner
is "John Reginald" Hooper. Have
John Regivalds a propensity for be-
coming uutorious 4
Of course flowers and banners and
cheers and things like that don't count
in the ballot•box ; but our esteemed
friends, the Grits, are respectfully re-
minded that they count just as much
for dignified Sir John Thompson as for
Frenchman Laurier.
The Quebec Legislature, which has
been called for the Oth of November,
will have several important questions
to consider, including the tax law, the
renewal of the four million dollar
Mercier loan, and the reform iu the
judiciary system.
Tho Mowat whiskey trust is a gigan-
tic engine of evil, says the St. Cather-
ines Star. It rides with iron wheels
over the (nen it has in its Power, and
grinds the substance out of them, but
still they have to submit and bear the
burden of raising funds to keep the
Christian statesman in power.
The Opposition are still at it. Con-
troller Wallace has been charged with
placing none but Roman Catholics in
office. A day or two later, with the
same reversible make-up that charao-
etizetd the Grit party on the Reil ques-
tion, Hon. Mr. Wallace is charged
with placii7g none but Orangemen in
office. This lneana that the Controller
is doing what is about right.
Thero will be mourning in the On-
tario Grit camp when the Provincial
Government return of chattel mort-
gagee issued in 1892 comes to be look-
ed up for texts for blue ruin speeches
next winter. It would appear that the
chattel mortgages on record as given by
the farmers of Ontario to secure exist-
ing debt, numbered 10,748 on the let
of Jannary, 1892, and amounted to $3,-
053,34.2. At the close of the year they
numbered 10,576.
, newspapers appear to have
proves' that Hooper le a liar but it
should be remembered that the plan
be tried for murder and not for prevol-
eien 4f the truth. If every liar were
placed au trial for hja life the jails
would bo full and the Civic, Provincial
and Federal Legi8ldturea would have
difficulty in finding aquoruw.
Twenty-seven Canadian bred horees
sold in New York last week for 'i;8,-
785, an average .of over $325 a head,
and the New York papers reported the
sale as being ope of the best of the
season. Items like this are pregnant
with interest for the Canadian farther.
They teach the wholesome lesson that
a good market can be found for gocd
horses -poor horses are not wanted
anywhere. There is no reason why the
right kind of horses iu Ontario ehoulu
not be indefinitely increased, and the
large the increase the more surely will
the market develop.
The St. Catharines Journal publishes .
the following items in its editoral col
umns. They speak for themselves:
"It is satisfactory to hear from our
business men that the prospects were
never better for a good fall and winter
trade than at present."
"What about the "hum?" Is not
fifteen year's of stagnation a pretty deal
price for the peopleof this city to pay in
order that half a score of manufacturers
and monopolists' may fatten and amae:•
wealth through a measure which legalize.
robbery just as the letters of marque
protected the old time privateer ?"
Repeated attacks have been made ill
the Grit press 013 Hon. T. M. Daly on
account of the superannuation of Mr.
Vankoughnet. The Ottawa Free PI 816
even goes so far as to etate that Mr.
Dely's action was illegarh The Grits
it would seem, will never be fair of
'tartest. Mr. Vankoughnet was sup
erannnated under section 11, which pre
vides for superannuation in order It
provide efficiency and economy. Mi.
Reed will combine the offices of De
puty Superintendent General of In
diau Affairs and Indian Agent, saving
one salary of $3,200, and the reductio1,
of travelling and other expenses will
bring the saving up to about $6,000
year, over and above the superunnua
tion allowance of Mr. Vankoughnet.
\Vhy don't the Grit press be honest.
and state this fact 1
At Listowel about 1,000 people, 200
of whom were ladies, congregated to
hear Mr. McCarthy last Thursday. A
press report says that Mr. McCarthy
was warmly received. He pointed out
that there was a radical difference bt
;ween the two patties. The Conserva-
tives de,•ired to continue a part of tl e
British Empire, while some, at least, cf
the leaders of the Reform party would
like to see Canada independent or allied
to the United States. He dissgretd
with both parties on the dual languate
and Manitoba school questione. He
had been questioned why he did not
join the Opposition, but he did not
agree with Mr. Laurier on his trade
policy and he absolutely disagreed
with him on all other questions. Mr.
McCarthy, according to the press re-
port, concluded as follows: -
"My views on the trade question don't
differ very much from those of. Mr.
Laurier," said Mr. McCarthy, "but there
is one point wherein we do differ. He
wants to let the Americans into uor
markets on any conditions. I am for the
lJoited States market on fair terms. I
realize that we have great trade inter.
este with the people ou the other side
of the line, and to the extent that they
are prepared to trade with us, I am pre-
pared to trade with them. If the
American Government says, agricultur-
al implements, let Canada say agricult-
ural implements and the same with
cotton, sugar and everything else."
Ontario's fruit exhibit at the World's
Fair is now conceded to be the largest
and finest exhibit in the Horticulture:
building. Seven districts of the pro•
vince are ropesented with individual
exhibits of applese, peals, peaches and
grapes. These districts aro :-Huron-
Grey, Simcoe, Belleville and .List
Wentworth, Burlington and Niagara.
Ontario is bound to sweep the board in
fruit as she has already in live stock.
Of the $30,000 in prizes in live stock
$14,400 already comes to Canada.
The big cheeee was tested the other after
noon by the three World's Fair judges,
A. F. McLaren, of Windsor, Out,,
and Messrs. Barber and Perley, of
the United Statev: A 33 inch
tryer was need, the cheese, scor-
ing 95 out of the possible 100
points. It was sound to the rind, clean
and of good flavor, notwithstanding
the excessive heat of the past summer.
At a meeting of Canadians at the
World's Fair, held in tho Canadian
pavillion Iset week, Executive Com
mieeioneer Larke in the chair, a com-
mittee, consisting of all the Dominion
and Provincial commissioners, was ap-
pointed to arrange for an address to be
presented to Lord -Aberdeen upon his
arrival. Another committee is to pre-
pare for a grand Canadian dinner at
the wind-up of the World's Fair.
