Shocking Hun Cruelty
As County Clerk Heiman was on the
train last Saturday on his way to Exeter,
he Met in with a returned soldier, with
whom he opened coniersatiot- and -was
much interested to find he had been ser-
geant major in the old first battalion, in
which Mr. Holman's son Gordon, served,
and knew him well. He remembered the
day when Gordon went into the trenches,
the last of August, 1915, at Plogsteert in
the Ypres sector, and was with him at
Messines, Somme, Lens, Loa, Cambrai
and Mons At Messines most of the old
33rd, with which Gordon went oveseas,
were wiped out. T h e sergeant major
asked Mr. Holman if he had not received
some handkerchiefs from his son, and
when Mr. Holman said he had, told him
about the little flaxen haired Flemish girl
who frequently went through the trenches
selling such articles, and from whom the
handkerchiefs Mr. Holman received were
purchased. She had her nose and ears
cut off by the brutal Huns. An even
worse story of Hun barbarity was backed
up by a photograph which the sergeant
major and Pte, Holnian took, and which
was shown to Mr, Holman. This was of,
the bodies of three -French girls whom
they found among some debris, with arms
andlegs cut off and the • bodies otherwise
mutilated. Small wonder that with such
examples of wanton cruelty before their
eyes, our soldiers went at the foe with the
determination that he must be absolutely
beaten.
Mr, Holman has just received another*
souvenir from his boy at the front, a Ger-
man`gas mask with its case,, which con-
tained extra lenses for use in case of
breakage.-Goderich Star.

house in order.
"At least we'll be clean," she said to
herself, as she made broom and duster
fly about.
Some months before this time Henry
Midgely had lost hie position as book-
keeper on account of the failure of the
firm for wbleh ho worked. They had
bad no idea of impending conditions
and were almost staggered by the
blow: The Midgelys had four growing,
children and every month had lived up
to the salary. Mr, Midgely had just
found another position. When Anne
wrote home she dicl not tell her family
of their loss, and she bravely set her
aelf the task of making up for the
months when debts had aectunitlated.
C.hr1tmas1 net was the hard part.
Nothing for the children! They had

"1 shall have to tell Judith," she said
to her husband that night, when they
were seated by the lamp and the chit-
dren were in bed, "how sorry we are
that we cannot make her Visit a pleas-
ant one,"
"It is too bad," said he. "Judith is
such a slave to your father, looking
after his every whim and 'ever think-
ing of herself, I wish elle had a home
pr her own. I tways planned to give
her a really good time whenever she
should make that long -deferred visit."
Judith arrived, her face shining with
happiness,
- "As last T am here! Are you quite
well, Anne?"
"Oh, yes, deer." Mrs.Midgely's voice
hadea strange note in it. judith looked
up quickly.
"You don't look well, Anne, What
is the matter?"
Poor Atme let the floodgates of her
tears open and told Judith her troll..
hies.
"We only that we don't want you to
have a stupid time, judith."
"Never mind about me," answered
Judith. "I am wilidly happy just to be
here with you all. But I am glad you
told me."
The children were delighted to have
their aunt with them. They had often
visited the pleasant oId white house
that had been their mother's home, and

"How interesting," exclaimed J11,-

Everyone was delighted t meet the
handsome young soldier and eager to

to 'Judith with her plans'for the chil-

work. In fact, he thought of so'many
things that he came to the Midgely's
at least once a day and every evening.
He trimmed the tree while Judith
made the simple things to adorn It.
One evening Mre. Atidgely remarked
to her husband: "I never saw a young
man so interested in children."'
He looked up from his paper in
amused surprise. " dear, do you
