MEETING OF UNIONISTS.
.THE FIRST OF A SERIES TO BE HELD IN
LONDON.
• The first, in the series of meetings
designed by the Unionists to rouse all
London against home rule was held in
the Royal Surrey theatre last week,
The Marguie of Saliebury was the
most notable speaker. He illustrated
his opinion of Mr. Gladstone's action
toward Irela d with au elaborate
metaphor basad on the account of the
recent disaster iu Washington. The
Premier, he said, was digging a cellar
under the ancient fabric of the empire.
He was working carelessly, as did the
.pen under the old theatre in Washing-
ton. If he should be allowed to con-
tinue his task all three floors of the
Imperial building -throne, church and
patlianlent-.would come crashing
_clown around the heads of the destruc-
tive Liberal party. At present every-
thing tended to favor the courageous
fight that the Unionists were making
against the dismemberment of the
empire. Several Liberal members of
Parliament had already refused to
follow their Ministers. The. Irish
leaders were busy quarrelling among
themselves. There were signs on
every side that the dark night of
apprehension was almost spent and
the dawn was breaking. The political
conditions under which alone home
rule would be possible were vanishing
slowly, but certainly.
THE ODOR OF SWEET BRIAR IN
A ROOM.
A great many things have a very
good scent, but which, when placed in
a room rather overpower ono. Some
people they affect seriously. The
most delightful plant of all, perhaps,
for a room is the common sweat -briar.
Sweet -briar should be much more gen-
erally planted than it is. It pro•
duces seeds freely; indeed, it
gathered in autumn and sown
in any hardy pot, it will produce
myriads of plants fit for planting in
hedgerows, on banks and in any place
where we like to enjoy its delicate
fragrance in spring. -London "Field."

Ue stood st Madison and Dearborn
street with a 4444 and d vacuous ex. -
pression. Fco1n his white hat to his
'brpwn shoes he was a duke of the
worst species, and the two men stand-
ing just behind him and wetting fir a
car were laughing at. him.
"Just look at it," said one of them,
scornfully. It thinks it is the sweet-
est thing in eight and that all the
woman are in love with it. To the
credit Of the sex I haven's seen one give
it a glance."
The other man turned and looked.
Just as he did so a well-dressed woman
walked over the crossing towards
where the dude stood. She did not
look at him, but tbe watchers noticed
that as she passed him she slipped a
small folded piece of paper into his
hand,
"You were a little previous about
the sex, weren't you 'I" asked the
second man. "Nice looking woman,
too. I wonder what under the sun she
could see in that thing. Watch him
open the not9,."
The dude"tooked around cautiously
to see if any one was looking. He
seemed pleased at hie success. The
two men waiting for a car were oston-
tatioualy looking the other way and he
opened the note.
Only for a minute did ho scan it.
Then with an expression of wild dis-
gust and a naughty word he crumpled
the paper up. ."Whew !" whistled
one of the men, "something's gone
wrong with the works and the youth
is troubled thereat. Wonder what she
said to him."
Tho other man stir'r'ed the crumpled
paper inquringly with his umbrella
"I don't see why we shoudn't look," he
said shamefacedly. "He threw it
away."
"Yes," said the other man slowly,
as he dropped his gloves "I don't
sea why we shouldn't either'." He
stooped to recover his glove, and when
he picked it up the crumpled paper
came t00.
"Let's get up in a doorway and see
what it says," he whispered.
They went into a hallway where a
dusty electric light hung. Expectantly
they unfolded the crumpled paper.
Ono read it over the others shoulder,
It said:
Do you love Jesus I
If not, why not 1
Jesus loves you.
"Woll" exclaimed theman who had
picked up the paper, P9 he looded dis-
consolately at -his fellow -conspirator.
"Thera are some methods of the Sal-
vation Army which I cannot approve
of. They savor of the 'con' game."
" FULL .OF POWER."
The man who is full of faith getapower
to face the world's prohibitions and
give expression to God's idea of things.
Power to resist the alluerufents of the
world, and overcome the promptings
of the flesh. The power whereby we
subdue our owu spirit, is greater than
any power ever exercised by Alexand-
er. How is it with you, brother l Do
you sometimes say -"I cannot do this."
" I cannot do that," " I cannot over'
come this," "I cannot- break otl' that
habit 1" 'You are going to the wrong
coffer, my friend ; you are going to the
coffer of your own miserable powers,
instead of to the coffer of Christ's
powers made over to you. What you
cannot do, what the law cannot do be-
cause itis weak through the flesh, God's
Spirit is offered to yell to do. Bury
that coffer of your own power's in the
depths of the sea, and live a life of
faith in the Son of God. Yon would
not think of attempting to heal the
leper by a word of your own, and yet
this would be not more preposterous to
attempt, than to fancy that you are to
overcome sin by your owu resolutions
and endeavors.
The tired steps, the, faltering steps,
The feeble ones and slow,
The Lord directeth oven these,
If after him we go.
A SUMMER SCHOOL.
One day I visited a school
Of which I'd often read,
'Twee kept within a shady pool
Where tr'eee met overhead ;
And even in the sultriest air.
Of hottest summer day,
'Twas alway cool and pleasant there
For work as well as play.
The scholar's had no elate or book ;
One lesson they were taught,
"The lesson how to dodge the hook
And never to get caught."
So in the pool they swam away
And darted in and out ;
The school I visited that day,
It was a " school of trout."
MR. LAURIER CALLED TO TASK.
The ' Minerva' announces that Arch-
bishop Tache has just completed an
essay the object of which is to show
that the Manitoba schools, called pub-
lic, national and neutral, are in reality
Protestant schools, and it calls upon
Mr. Laurior to stand up and claim jus-
tice for his Manitoba compatriots and
coreligioniata, since he declared, dur-
ing the last session, that he would act
so soon as the proof now furnished by
Archbishop Tache was given.
