ADDING TO OUR NUMBERS.—Two
new residents were added to the popu•
lation of Clinton recently, but we are
sorry to say that neither of them will
be old enough to vote at the approach•
ing Ontario elections. On' the 5th
inst. a son was added to the family of
Mr. Arthur Cook, and on the 7th inst.
there was added to the valuable pose
essions of Mr. David Cantelon a son.
SPECKLED BEAUTIES.—T11 iS la not
a fish story. Seeing is believing;
eating is convicing. And the person
who eats speckled trout at this season
of the year would be a novelty of the
human creation if he could not speak
personally. The other day the editorof THE NEWS•RECORD received from
Mr. J. W. Riter a half dozen large,
beautiful speckled trout caught by the
latter. We were reminded of our
more youthful days when a walk of
10, 12 or 15 miles to secure five or six
dozen gratified our desire and palate.
11r. Biter istendered our sincere thanks
for a dish that should make Kings and
Queens of this Greater Britain rejoice
to secure something they longed for
without price or exertion.

A GooD THING.—Messrs Shively &
Sutherland are exhibiting to the
people of Clinton an educational
appliance for school children which
should be in the hands of every
public school child. It is the most
complete arrangement we have seen
and wish the gentlemen every
success. We are personally acquaint-
ed with them and recommend the ap-•
pliance to the best consideration of
our people.
BUY FROM HOME DEALERS.—It is a
short sighted policy which inclines
people to buy from agents and travel•.
ling vendors articles which home
merchants have taken pains to supply
in ell necessary quantities at reason-
able rates. Such peripatetic dealers
cannot be looked to for any enterprise
or benefitto the town nor for any help
in carrying the necessary burdens that
fall upon all. They are much more
liable than home dealers to carry
shoddy and to use deception in eale,
and the buyeie are usually without
remedy when deceived. It is a short
sighted policy that does not always
give home dealers a reasonable pre-
ference in making purchases and this
applies to printing as well as all other
articles.

IN
THE FAIR.—Last Wednesday the
monthly fair was hold in Clinton.
There was a fair attendan:e and a con-
siderable number of horses changed
hands at fair prices. Spring ' work
being late with farmers, many who
desired to attend were unable to be
present. Many farmers took advant-
ago of the day and brought their wool
to town. We venture to say that the
new woolen mill store handled more
wool than has been marketed here in
years past. The fair was a success.
MEN or BUSINESS—You cannot afford
to have your office scantily supplied
with stationery of an inferior grade.
First impressions are strong and your
business methods will be judged by
your business forms. When the high-
est grade of printing can be had at as
low a price as the poorest grade, you
should get the best. THE NEws•RE
comb Job Dept. is filled with modern
facilities for the highest class of work.

WEST HURON TEACHERS. —Several
of our readers have asked TIIE NEWS -
RECORD why a report of the recent
doings of this Association has not ap
peered in the columns of this journal.
The only reason, and a very just one,
is that we were not furnished with the
proceedings the same as other papers.
To make the matter clear, we were not
given a report at all. We presume

HE WAS MISSED.—Last January
after the municipal elections THE NEWS
RECORD mentioned that ex -Warden
Beck, of Saltford, would bo greatly miss-
ed from the County Council. In several
respects Mr. Beck has been missed,
but probably by none more than the
members of ` the 33rd Battalion.
When the matter of a email grant
to the volunteers was brought up last
week some men who worked _foe_. Mr.
Beck's defeat in the municipal elections
would rather he had been there. The
grant was voted, down and our defend-
ers were refused a just recognition.
Broad minded and influential men
like ex -Warden Beck should still be in
the County Council.
A FINE . TANNERY,—The name
"Joe" Beck is familiar to the great
majority of NEws•REcoRD readers. He
is a man who likes to bave a system
for everything—the business machin•
ery as perfect as clock work. And we
notice that this rule has been in a
practical manner carried into the en-
tire arrangement of his splendid now
tannery at Saltford. The interrior
has been rebuilt and remodeled en
strict business principles with a view
to placing on the market the largest
amount of superior manufactured Cana-
dian leather at the lowest possible coat.
This extensive 'tannery will likely bo
rtflining at full blast in a few days and
we predict a large measure of success
and continued public favor for the ex-
Warden .
