THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND AND THE QUEEN
OF ITA'1,Y SEND INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITS.
The individual'exhibit of the Queen
of England arrived at the World's
Fair grounds last week. Along with
it came the individual exhibit of the
Queen of Italy. These valuable ad.
ditions to the attractions of the White
City were brought from the safe
deposit vaults, where they have lain
since their arrival in Chicago. Queen
Victoria's exhibit consists of a great
variety of tapestries, some of which
have hung in the Royal palace for
centuries. They are of great value
and have their safety guaranteed by a
bond of $100,000. 'Tbe exhibit of
Queen Marguerito consists largely of
laces. Some of them are centuries old,'
while others fire of modern make, but
from ancient patterns. The process by
which tbey were made, and by_which
their texture is rendered practically in-
destructible was for many yeare a lost
art. It was but recently discovered
and is known only by the lace makers
employed at the Royal household, con-
sequently the exhibit is almost price-
less in value. The laces were loaned
to the exposition by Queen Marguerite
and a bond of $100,000 was given,
guaranteeing their safe return at the
close of the fair.
—Railroad men are of the opinion
that on account of the 'World's Fair
traffic there will be few, if any, local
excursions this summer', as all the avail-
able cars will be required for through
travel. •

WOOL.
Not in 20 years has the wool ninukot been
in a worse condition at this season of the
year than at present. No one seems to want
wool, except at prices about level with foreign
stock without duty added. This, too, in the
face of bare markets, and ,it good demand for
woolens. Of course this dullness does not all
proceed from one cause, but from several
combine(. Manufacturers are interested in
depressing prices, and realize the inimenso
power the prospective tariff changes give them
in accomplishing their purpose - Then
money is very stringent, as the result of
heavy importations, large axpenditures abroad,
and the general spirit of gambling shown in
real estate, grain options stoke, etc-. This has
tied up lame sunis of money, an'l shortened
up the ability of many banks to help their
customers. The continued exportation of
hold abroad is another ball symptom in the
financial situaton. This latu'r fact, however,
is rather favorable to those who hold wool, as
the higber cost of gold comDand with other
currency, will add to the price of the foreign
articles, and thus tend to prevent impor-
tations.
In the present of the market we believe.
it will be good policy for wool- mowers,
where they have nept sold their cips, or
contracted them, to put their fleeces up in
good shape, and wait for the market to come
to them. The wool will all be wanted, and
no foreign wools can corse in duty free for the.
next seven months at least. Before that
time manufacturers must become purchasers
to keep their machinery in motilin, and whon
they are compelled to buy the holder is
master of the sltuution. At the opening of the
market for unwashed wool, feeling confident
that the present condition of the mark t
would be reached, we counselled shearing and
chipiing as earl pp as possible. Where this
could be done, tide wool -grower got a fair
market for his clip, and one from 2 to 3o. better
than it is tb-day. The market has now got
fn such a shape that to crowd it fartber can
only result• disastrously to sellers, .and the
only way in which some strength can he
kIven it is to stop selling until it improves.
If this isenerall' (lone the result is certain
as tlio clip nnlat'be had to meet the demands
of the wool business. We see 'no escape front
the cohelusion that a 2'rowded market means
still lower prices, and a cessation of sales a
Better market and higher values,•--141foWgin
