"CANADA TO ENGLAND."
A NEW PATRIOTIC SONG BY JAMES L.
HUGHES.
The need of a popular uati.nal song
that could be easily raised at a public
meeting was impressed ou Inapector
Hughes at the Slaribttt ne meeting lately.
This led him to write one to the tune
of "Beulah Land," a sacred air which
is familiar in town and country. The
new song will be introduced into the
schools and also at public meetings.
Itis as follows :
, ANA DA TO ENGLAND.
OhlMisttess of the mighty sea!
Oh, Motherland so great and free!
•Canfldi in hearts shall ever be
United in their love for thee.
Chorus—
Yes, Motherland ! dear Motherland 1
Beneath the Union Jack we'll stand,
A pal t of thy impel nal whole,
Frotu sea to sea, it 0111 pole to pole,
On woodlr.nd Ilei ;ht and fe, tile plain
True Bi it'sh subjects we'll remain.
Thy power sh•:11 ft'':,Ii and hope iaipart,
Thy li•.terty iuspite each helet,
Thy ,justice ever guid us 1 ight,
Thy nonor be our beacon Light.
Chores : Yes Motherland ! etc.
To share the glo.lesoi' thy prst;
Thy sailo s :move beneo to the most,
Ault soldic s t ue on many a field,
H..ve taught Canadians not to yield.
'Chorus : Yes Mollie rand ! etc. •

IT WAS HER ANNIVERSARY.
Some drummers were diverting
themselves in a smoking car by repeat-
ing episodes of socalled "cheek." All
but one had related an instance; when
he was called upon, he drearily said
"I don't remember anything worth
telling; in fact, my wife bas complete-
ly dazed my metuory of matters of
that kind by a fine sample of her own
stock. You see, when I got back from
my latest trip I went home at something
after 9 o'clock in the evening. Well,
there was my house lighted fry= top•
story to basement ; carriages were
leaving the door, and affairs seemed to
be going inside on a grand scale. I
let myself into the basement with a
latch -key and walked into the dining-
toom. Straine•of music came from the
back part of the hall, and the mingled
laughter and conversation indicated a
host of guests.
"Preaently my wife came into the
dining -room dressed like a princess ;
she ran up to me, saying :
"'Oh, Jack 1 I'm so glad you've Dome
home early.'
"'So'm I, said I; 'what's the racket--
surprise party 1'
"'Surprise party V !said she with a
pout ; 'no indeed, it's the anniversary
of my wedding.'
"'Tilde,' said I, 'you're off; you're
away off 1 This is the month of March
—it was itt Bummer we were married 1
"She serenely replied : 'I know that
very well; this is the anniversary of
my firet marriage. Go put on your
dress suit, Gear."'

WAS HE MURDERED.?
The plate on the casket eontaiuing
the body of Carlyle W. Harris, wbo was
electrocuted in Sing Sing last week for
the murder of his young wife, bore the
inscription:
CARLYLE W. HARRIS,
Murdered May 8, 1893,
Aged 23 years, 7 nlonths, 15 days.
We would not, if we had known,
THE JURY.
WITH A RAZOR.
A FARM LABORER MAKES A MURDEROUS
ATTACK UPON HIS WIFE.
Galt, Ont., May 6 —'Phomas Sulli•
van, a hired man working on the farm
of R. P. Irving, near Glentnorrie,
made a murderous attack upon his
wife, who had just arrived from Sarnia,
with a razor this afternoon, cutting her
on the face, neck and hands in a
terrible manner. They we alone in
a field at the time, and bad It not been
for her cries, which brought a neigh•
boring farmer to her aesistanoe, Mrs.
Sullivan would have been killed. A
doctor from Galt was sent for, who
pronounced the wounds very danger-
ous. Sullivan, who is well known
around Galt and Glenrnorris, and who
has the reputation of being a quiet
and harmless uian, was jailed. It
appears Sullivan and his wife quarrel.
ed so often that a separation took place,
Mrs. Sullivan going to Sarnia to live,
it is said, with another man, sending
their three children to a house of re-
fuge. Lately Sullivan, who cannot
read or write, got s friend to write a
letter for him to his wife, asking her
to come back ; that he had $15 to give
her to erect a tombstone over the grave
of one of the children, and he also in-
structed Mrs. Irving to send Mrs. Sul-
livan out in the field, where he was
working, when she arrived from Sar•
nia. This was complied with by Mrs.
Irving, never suspecting any murder-
ous intention on the part of Sullivan.

WONDER IN WELLAND!
A Representative Farmer

MR. C. C. HAUN.
The following remarkable facts are fully
certified to as being undeniably correct in
every particular. Mr. Haun is well known
in the vicinity, having resided here over
fifty years, and is highly respected as a
man of the striqtest honor, whose word is
as good as his bond.
As will be seen from his letter, four
physicians had attended him, and it was
only after be had given up hope of cure
that he decided to try Burdock Blood.
Bitters on the recommendation of a
neighbor who had been cured of a similar
disease by its use. Mr..lareun writes as
follows:
DEAR Sins,—I think I have been ono
of the worst sufferers you have yet beard
of, having been six years in the hands of
four of our best doctors without obtaining
permanent relief, but continually growing
worse, until almost beyond hope of re-
covery, I triod your Bitters and got relief
in a few days. Every organ of my body
was deranged, the liver enle, rged, hardened
and torpid, the heart and digestive organs
seriously deranged, a largo abscess in my
back, followed by paralysis of the right
leg, in fact the lower half of my body w1L8
entirely useless. After using Burdock
Blood Bitters for a few days the abscess
burst, disoharing fully five quarts of pus
in two hours. I felt as if 1 had received a
shock from a powerful battery. My re-
covery after this was steady and the cure
permanent, seeing that for the four years
sinco I have had as good health as ever I
bad. I still take an occasional bottle, not
that I need it but because I wish to keep
my system in perfect working order. I
can think of no more remarkable case
than what I have myself passed through,
and no words can express my thankfulness
for such perfect recovery.
C. C. HAON,
Welland P.O.
In this connection the following letter
from T. Cuminea, Esq., a loading druggist
of Welland, Ont., speaks for itself:
Me•ers. T. Milburn & Co., Toronto.
GENTLEM6N,— I have been personally
acquainted with Mr. C. C. Haan for the
last 20 years, and have always found him
a very reliable man. You may place the
utmost confidence in anything he says
with regard to your medicine. Ho has on
many occasions within the last four years
told me that it was marvellous the way
the Burdock Blood Bitters had cared him,
and that he now felt as able to do a day's
work as he ever felt in his life. Although
quite well he still takes some B. B. B.
occasionally, as he says, to keep him in
perfeot health.
Yours truly,
Tnobtts Cuorntaa,
Welland, Ont.
The steadily increasing sato of B. B. B.,
the length of time it has beon before the
people, and the fact that it cures to stay
cured, attest the sterling merit of this
monarch of medicines, the people's favorite
blood purifier, tonic and regulator.
