the regions whence the different brauehe8

There exists a definite harrier separating
marc from the auinutl which has not yet
been ellaued -heredity, which transmits to

have never sem' a monkey bring u 1110 II into
the world, nor a nein produce a monkey.
All .nen having a simian appearance are
simply pathological variants. It was gen•
entity believed a few years ago that there
yet existed a few htlt1rau race's which still
remained in the pruuitive interior :south -
then of their organization. ization. But all these
races have been object of minute Mem t es. -

thus, a the Eskimo head and the lesel

the perfected types. Some races Imre
the same skulls very small, of anout the
seine volume ae the microcephalous skulls ;
for example, the inhabitants of the Anda-
man islands and the Veddalis of Ceylon
have been regarded as Imerocephulic. A
more exact study has, however, shown a
difference between them and the real
microcephalia races. The head of an
Andaman Islander or of a Veddaii is very
regular, only all its parts are a little
smaller than among men of the ordinary
races. Nanicephahc heeds (dwarf), as I
call them, have none of those characterivtic
anomalies that distinguish really micro-
cephalic heads. A single race, that of the
Orang•Simuings and the Orang•Celmi of
the peninsula of Malacca, stilt remains
unstudied. The single traveler who has
penetrated into the mountainous coun-
tries inhabited by them, the bold l as-
siau, Miklukho degas(, has arc 0tain0,1
that certain isolated individuals among
Silneings are small, and have curled hair.
A new expedition has been sent int., that
country to study the anthropology of the
Oraug-Cekai, from which I have recently
received a skull and a few lucks of hair ;
the stock is really a black race with curly
hair, the brachycephalous head of which is
disguised by very moderate interior vol-
ume, but it docs not offer the must trilling
sign of bestial development. 'Pilus we are
repulsed at every line of the assault
upon the human question. All the re-
se.trches undertakeuwitlt the aim of hull-
ing continuity in progreasivd development
have been without result. There exist s no

"connecting link" remains a phantom.
IGNORANCE ABOUT VAMPIRES.
-At Grand Bend, on Sunday of last
week the house of W. B. Follrs was
entered by burglars in the absence of
the family. The inner man being
satisfied they departed with a gold
watch. leaving a note behind to the
effect that McGinty wanted the house
left in hotter shape next time.
-Rev. Dr. Wild, the prophet of the
Bond street Congregational church,
Toronto, says the world will come -to
an end ere 2893. One consoling
thought about it, all for those of us
who around just now ie that we will all
be slumbering quietly beneath the
daisies when the critical moment ar
rives. The doctor is wise in taking no
changes in his prophecies. He fixes
his dates too far ahead for any 0130 to
poke fun at him if he turns out to have
been barking up the wrong tree.
-William W. Lee, confectioner, of
Woodstock, left town last week in com-
pany with Robert Baldwin. They
have gone to Montana. Lee leaves
many creditors. A short time ago he
gave a bill of sale on stock to Mr. A.
Mountjoy, of this city, for $300, but
represented to Mr. D. S. Perrin and
other creditors, that he did not intend
leaving town. When Lee reached
Port Huron he sent this laconic mess-
age to Perrin's traveller :-"Did you
ever get left 1" 'Mr. Perrin at once
put a bailiff' in charge of the store,
while Mountjoy claims possession
under a bill of sale. A lawsuit is
threatened to determine who is legally
entitled to the confectionery. Leo's
wife died a few months ago,
and it occasioned much surprise
to learn that ho had been
clandeetineiy married at Ingersoll by
Rev. Mr.Burns to Miss Lizzie Connor.
Baldwin, who accompanied him west,
was wedded at the same time
to Tena Harrison,, but both brides
were left in Woodstock. ' Lee has two
children, whom he left with his
mother near Ingersoll. The brides

Confused Stories About the Blood -Sucking
But of Soutar Arnorien.
Even since the South American Conti-
nent was discovered, especially that part of
it, lying between the Amazon and Orinoco
ricere, trttvellers have come frotn there with
wonderful tales of the vampires, or, as
they call thein, blood -sucking bats. As a
fact, little is known about these pests.
That there are blood -sucking bats which
teed not only on the blood of man but also
animals is an undoubted fact, and though
the writer himself has never been bitten
by one, he has, while traveling in the in-
terior of British Guiana, seen Indians and
ponies that had undoubtedly been bitten
by these bats. In the case of a man attack-
ed the toe or nose is punctured, while ani-
mals are liable to be bitten anywhere.
How the bat does its work has 'sot been
made clear, for no man has yet awakened
while being operated on by one of these
bats, despite the fact that considerable
blood is extracted and more or less loss of
blood takes place after the operation. It
is probable that the bat hovers during the
operation rather than rests on the body.
Tho rapid vibration of the soft wings pro-
bably also has a soothing effect on the skin
of the part operated olj
The blood -suckers b long to only two or
three species, and who ever these are found
there are also many others whose food is
only fruits or insects, or both. The most
natural mistake about the bats which are
innocent of preying on man or beast is the
common supposition that vampyrus spec-
trum is a blood -sucker. The stretch of
wings of this bat frequently reaches three
feet, and it has a must ferocious aspect,
with enormously large and pointed canine
teeth. It is perfectly certain that in most
parts of British Guiana this bat is only a
fruit -eater and is a serious pest to fruit
growers. Bates and Edwards, who travel-
ed much in that country, vouch for its
harmlessness, and the writer could never
hear of a case where one of these giant bate
was even suspected of being a blood -sucker.
Wallace, however, gives a different Re-
count.
"The vampires aro especially plentiful in
the Amazon Valley. Their carnivorous
propensities were once discredited, but are
too well authenticated. Horses and cattle
are often bitten and we found them in the
morning covered with blood, and repeated
attacks weaken and ultimately destroy
Ahem. Some persons are especially subject
to the attacks of these bats, and as native
huts are never sufficiently close to keep them
eut, those unfortunate persons are obliged
to sleep completely muffled up in order to
avoid being made seriously ill or even losing
their lives."
Wallace, in saying that "the huts are
never sufficiently close to keep them out,"
evidently uses the word vampire as a
generic term and does not moan the vam-
- pyrus spectrum, for that bat would find no
apace large enough to let him into even the
loosely built huts of the natives. It is this
slipshod way of using the term vampire
that brings trouble to many a useful bat.
The writer has been in a house where every
precaution was taken to keep out hats which
would have been a perfect blessing in the
rooms, as they would have caught hundreds
of mosquitos.
