DALTON M'CARTiIY AND THE
EMPIRE.
A summery !of Mr. Dalton Me•
Carthy's address at Stayner has already
appeared. In it he announced his in•
tention of leaving the Conservative
party and taking a position on the cross
benches. The primary reason for this
course was declared to be the fact that
he (Mr. McCarthy) had Neon attacked
in the Empire newspaper, which had
called him "a wobbler," and that the
attack had not been repudiated by the
Govel nment. Another reason which
he gave for his desertion was that he
had not been consulted in the forma-
tion of the new Cabinet. Many Con•
vote of themes, declared that ho had
become a supporter of Sir Oliver
Mowat. It was indeed a holt out of
the blue, and wetly and loud were the
comments as the listeners wended their
way home. The desertion of the local
leader would be an act of such a d.li-
terdly character coming from \[r. Jia
Carthy that The Empire refused at the
tittle to believe he could be guilty of it,
and put the construction on his %rot l
that he simply meant to approve of Sur
Oliver's dismissal of Mr. Elgin Myers
The Grit papers, however, gave trip
words prneticathly or Ito dolivero,i
them, Tho Mail next morning report-
ing him ns saying :—
"If Sir Olivers•M wat had lost the
support of Elgiu yers, he had gviued
the support and vote of Dalton Mo•
Cattily,"
While the Globo gave it as follows :
"lie, for his part; said to Sit Oliver
Mowat that if he had lost the support
of Elgin 'Myers he had gained Dalton
McCarthy'ssupport in rho future."
Owing to the mediums through which
this language was repurted, it did nut
get to Conservatives generally, but is
the city it occasioned talk, and, as to
the way in which it was iuterpr eted, it
is only necessary to give an extract
from one of the evening papers of th'tt
day. The News headed its leading
article :—"On the Eve of a Crisis."
"Dalton \[cCarthy's Significant Dec-
laration Last Night." Anti the open
ing paragraphs were as follows :—
"If Sir Oliver Mowat has lost the
support of Elgin 'Aye's, he has' gained
that of Dalton McCarthy," ,.
"This was the declaration made by
the nlonlber for North Sirucoe last night,
and it is the moat important state meat
that hes boon heard front a public plat
form in this couutry in a generation.
When a man possessed of the sober in-
telligence of this great lawyer, and
with a splendid political reputation at
stake, announces his intention of for
getting the animosities of the past and
joining hands with a man whole he
has loug bitterly opposed, and is cheer
oil for doing so, It is surely an indica-
tion that a crisis is at hand,"
'('here could be no mistaking how
the language was being viewed. But
how did Mr. McCarthy, who now de-
liberately lays it down as the duty of
public men to rush before the public
with some declaration about an article
which he chooses to suspect they may
have something to do with inspiring,
on pain of his vepgeance, act when his
owu plain declaration was in question 1
Did he repudiate the meaning which
was being attached to it 1 Let us see.
The Netts that day gave him an oppor-
tunity to do so, by sending a'reporter
to interview him. If he had a spark
of proper feeling about him, he must,
have known how it, would bo regarded
that he of all men should desert Mr.
Meredith, whose reputation is unsullied
and whose loyalty is as strong as that
of either Dalton McCarthy or Oliver
Mowat, on the flimsy pretext that Mr.
Mowat had done his simple duty on
the occassion. If he did not mean his
words as they were taken, here wag ilia
opportunity to set the matter at rest by
saying that he simply meant to approve
of Sir Oliver's dismissal of Myers.
1)id he do so when thus invited 1 Let
the interview speak for itself, The
Netts headed it. "I[o Meant It."
McCarthy has Nothing to Add to That
Already Said." And here is the inter-
view:—
"I mean just what I said last night,'
remarked Mr. McCarthy, when spoken
to to day. "I did not imply that there
was going to be a breaking up of the
old parties on the annexation question.
I have no authority to speak for anyone
except myself." Mr. McCarthy was
asked if it might be implied from itis
utterances that he was ready to even
take the platform for Mr. Mowat on
this question, if neceseary. "1 did
not imply anything more than I said
last night," he replied thoughtfully,
but he did not seem surprised at the
query.
Had the Empire then come out as it
might properly have done in denun-
ciation of the members for North Situ-
coe, the Conservatives of the Province
would have had their eyes opened.
But the old feeling for one who, ro
matter what his vagaries may have been
of late, was at one time a prominent
and trusted member of the Conserva-
tive party restrained us, and we waited,
hoping that yet some sign of repudia-
tion would be manifested by him.
But we waited in vain. Instead of
that, in a week or two we got informa-
tion that, having repudiated the Con-
servative leader in the Province, he
was holding private meetings of his
friends preparatory to throwing oval --
board the Conservative leaders in the
Dominion, end was (S not the time for
the Empire to let the public into a
knowledge of wl;at was going on 1
This ,journal lvould have boon recreant
t0 its trust had it not done so.
