With Velvet Quote or Capes in Riele, ' Bright Shade** One very marked feature of the season'l fashioue is the fancy for wearing dark gowns, with coats or capes of velvet in rich, bright shades and very ornate tied brilliant in decoration. Particularly Mho tive. because as yet uncommon, are the coats of blaok or dark green velvet worn • by the tall, slight women, for which fashion ever reserves her choicest productions. These °outs are cut much on the old baeque order, with a very flaring skirt fulling out from the waist, and deep shoulder ruffles, or several frilled capes with a Ugh dating (Crowded out last week.) Y. Sun. SPANKED BY THE QUEEN. How Albert Edward VVae Disciplined by Ill. Royal mamma. A story which narrates how the Prince of Wales was spanked by his sovereign mamma when he was a lad is just out. It was written by an Aberdeen chronicler, and de- scribed a trip upon the royal yacht to Bal- moral at the time when the heir apparent was only 5 or 0 years of age. Among other things placed on the dock for the accommo- dation of the Queen was a splendid sofa, ornamented with tassels, and the Prince, like other boys of that age, being of a de- structive turn, began to pull at one in a manner that threatened to detach it. His mother observed the act and ordered hits to desist. He did so, but as soon as her back was turned he seized the tassel again to give another jerk. The Queen appeared to have expected something of the kind. In an instant she turned, and seizing the luck- less heir-appssent of England by the scruff of the neck, erevated one of her feet upon the sofa, hoisted the youngster over her knee, adjusted him in the position mutually familiar to parents and children generally when such ceremonies are to be performed and gave him a sound spanking. And that was by no means the last thrashing which Albert Edward deserl'ed and re- ceived. hie illness. Mr. Wm. Riley received a car load of shingles last week, which he is pre- pared to sell at reasonable prices. Mr. Johp T. Lee, of Clinton, was here on Friday night attending the S. 0. E. meeting. The Home Circle will meet in the Forester's hall to -morrow evening. A number of the young folks drove to the residence of Mr. Harry Govier, near Manchester, and enjoyed them- selves tripping the light fantastic till an early hour. Saw logs are coming intoi the saw mill pretty lively. Mr. R. Wallace will run the mill again this season. The next meeting of District Lodge, N,.o. 24, I. 0, G. T., will he held in Bolgrave next \Veduosda3, 18th lust. 'there should be a good turnout of representatives from the Lodges of the District. , The contest in the I.O. G. T. Lodge here, which closed last week, resulted in a victory for 13ro. James Fairsor vice's side by a large number of marks. As one of the results of this contest twenty-one new names were added to the roll. Surpmerhill, Manchester, Blyth and Kinburu lodges are invited to visit this lodge on Tuesday evening next, lith inst. The following officers of the Sons of England were installed by Bro. 'Phos. Jackson, District 'Deputy, on Friday evening:—W. P.. A. Woodman; P. P., Geo. C. Thompson; V. P., John E. Taylor ; Chap., Joseph Morrie; It. S., Bond Laurason ; T., Geo. Snell ; Managing Committee, A. Brunedon, Thos. Cole, P. W. Thompson, James Woodman, Wm. Wallace and T. Ii. Bell. Bro. Jackson complimented the lodge on its success and methods of doing business. The lodge has 34 membere in good standing, and have $190 on hand with which to pay sick benefits. After the meeting was fin- ished, refreshments were brought in and served to all present by Miss Brogden, Miss Woodman and Mies Adams, who kindly came for the pur- pose. After all had partaken a pleasant time was spent in listening to songs, recitations, t rnntontal Inst epo0 speeches and music. All then dispersed well satis- fied. TIae Fortune Teller. She stood in the weird first twilight By the fire of the gipay camp, Surrounded hyshadows, half startled By the ereekle of horses' tramp; New England. hlue•eyed and slender, And Maty haggard and fell ; The past had been spoken—the future Those onhlnoua lips should foretell, "My husband," she blushed, "shall I see him Ere the staples turn into gold?” "Your husband," she pondered, "your husband, Ere olives are picked you behold ; His face is handseme and manly, His hand has the grasp of a king ; Ask not beyond this for the harvest, Know only how fair is the spring." "In palace or cottage or castle, In city or town shall we live?"- "Ah, daughter, you ask of the future More than you wish 1 should give. If the hand that shall guard and protect you Has love in its press, ne'er complain ; Your home shall be sweeter for dreaming, Though your castle's—a castle in Spain." —Charles Knowles Bolton, in the December Ladies' lIome Journal, Servants In England. The eight -hour -a -day proposition for do- mestic servants and various other schemes for getting Parliament to interfere between servants and employers, which have been urged by the London Domestic Servants' Union, have failed to make even a favorable impression in a critical examination before the Royal Labor Commission. The com- mision gave a long hearing to a representa- tive of the union, but the case fell to pieces under questionings. The impracticability of the eight-hour idea applied to dom servants was very clearly demonstr ted. It also appeared that the union 'ts• was very weak, and that the vast ajority of domestic servants seemed to r' well treated and quite content. Th: ' fig:v ' b 111 ow- ed that the servant is r better IT in ce= gard to facilities for 1 gal refire:'' than is the employer. The a .' on had , reposition to substitute a sys eying servants "in kind," but i sentative was "not quite prepay "i ^; lggest a''system to take the place o mon `''' wages." The conclu- sions arrived at by t = commission so far are that the relation s between employer and domestic screen . must be of.a give-and- take character, ant any interference by the Legislature would do more harm then good. • :,:,ti3'u'dnrrf•,• :.5+:&,'inrs..ry •i:: orway dine Syrup. A little girl is content with a wax doll, but a boy wants a live dog that will follow him and chase things. If the girls were sent away to school, and spent the time in playing match games of croquet, what a howl there would be from parents 1 But lots of poor people are paying out money to give their boys a chance to kick a ball over the State.— Atchison Globe.
