They are convetlient—curing at once numerous ills, ailments and diseases, to which all are liable. They are efficient. By their timely use five - sixths of all diseases may be arrested without serious illness or calling a physician, thus saving a vast amount of suffering and a multitude of lives. They are reliable. In the entire list there is not one which has not the guarantee of the most ample experi- ence over and over repeated; as to its great curative value and efficacy. They are economical. A few doses often save a visit from the doctor, and a long course of sickness with its heavy -expense. Htuuphreys' Specifics are the result of a discovery of a particular remedy or specific for each particular disease. This is accoiuplished accord- ing to a law announced by Dr. Humphreys to the profession forty years ago,.and since elaborated and ex- tended to the whole series of his Spec- ifics. Manual free. BEGIN RIGHT.—Do you wish to begiu the New Year right? Pay your sub- scription t0 THE RTEWS•RECORD tbi8 week. You will rhea feel happy. And so will the editor. THE Estt'uww.—The Empire's fifth an• niversary umber was a handsome edition. It 'consisted of twenty-eight pages, nud oontaiued mush valuable iu- fortuatiou to the Canadian public. A leading feature of the paper was the illustration of promiuent manufac- turiug concerns throughout the Do miuiou. CENTRE HURON STOCK FARM —Ex• Mayor Doherty has sold within the last two or three weeks "Lady Crown", bay mare, to W. Powell, Moncton, N. lie, "Rialto", bay colt, to W. J. Stark, Stou(fvillo, Ont.; "La Fleche," bay filly, to W. J. Stark, StoutIvi11e; "Fanny M," chesnut mare, to O. S. Macgowan, Moncton, N. B., and others, at good prices. BLOOD HORSE SOLD—We see by Clark's Horse Review that the ]lev.Mr. Liviugston, of Listowel, late of Clinton, has sold the yearling silly that lie pur- chased from W. Doherty, proprietor of the Centre Huron Stock Farm,`Clinton, some tirno ng , to Mr. Joe. Hess, of Temperance fame,; price $300. 'lhis speaks well fur the rev. geutleman's judgment of horse flesh, and ale° very highly for the farm which raised the cult. Good stock conies high but some people must have it. Last week we noticed in our Isaac street cotem a remark that a letter which appeared in that paper before the election, was the cause of Mr. Andrew's defeat in St. George's ward., We do not believe it. The electors of St.""George's are not the kind to be in- fluenced by a letter of that nature. The only persons -we can conceive of being influenced' in any way by it were the writer and the editor. But it is gen- erally understood that the election of Mr. Searle was a joke. Had he beaten Mr. Andrews only—his old oppon ent—it would have appeared a natural victory, but when he led the poll away ahead of Mr. Plummer it gave the snap dead away.—Com. OURSELVES.—We do not like to talk about ourselves. It is quite natural to the editor, at least, to not have much to say about what concerns THE NEWS RECORD. During the last few weeks we 'have reproduced several columns of matter giving the expressed opinions of reputable county and provincial journals, from the lowest to the high- est, as to the past, present and future Of THE NEWS—RECORD. We need not say that we feel grateful or that we are disappointed. The only disappoint went is that the editor feels that he has been given credit for ability which he was not aware he possessed. And now conies similar commendations from town and country friends. We shall continue to endeavor to keep THE NEWS -RECORD up to a high standard of excellence. All we now ask is a con tiuued support from all classes of peo- ple who desire to see their town and their country prosper. 'POINTS FOR OUR PUIILIC MEN.—The Minto and Arthur cheese and butter manufacturing company have now fin- ished the most successful season since the factory was built. The total num- ber of pounds of cheese manufactured without manufacturing for patrons is 230,138 or over 115 tons, The money distributed to all parties concerned amounts to $22,285,56. Mr, Duncan Sinclair, who has proved himself a first•olaes cheese maker, has passed through his hands 2,431,111 pounds of milk from 141 patrons. The manufac- turing rnte has also bean reduced this yonr to an average of 1.63 cents per pound, compared with 1.75 cents and sometimes 2 cents in former, years. As the factory has been thoroughly re• paired and overhauled this year, it is expected the rate will be still lower next year. Are there not points in the above worthy the consi, doration of local public men? BECAUSE the metropolitan weeklies are solo at one dollar n year is that a good reason why the country publisher should offer his weekly at the same price 1 We think not. The mot• ropolitan weekly as a rule, appeala to no special class or community—it is pure- ly cosmopolitan. On the other hand, the couutry weekly, if well conducted, gives the local news of the district in which it is published, thereby appeal- ing directly to its own constituency. To gather such news 'and put it into shape, is a task that should be reward- ed and the publisher ie not justified in aeking for such labor less than it is worth. Tho country weekly fills a want entirely beyond the power of the metropolitan weekly to fill, and they should in no way be looked upon as rivals. The farmer and thoee who dwell in small towns and vilingeeought to take some of the large and well con• ducted weeklies published in the cities, because they set good value for their money, but they certainly should take the local paper, and know what is tran• epiring in their own locality. A know• ledge of such work is surely worth at least $1.50 a year or three cents a week. We have been too busy to write advertisements during the last few days.
