WORDS OF WISDOM.
A GLORIOUS FUTURE FOR THE CANA•
DIA` PEOPLE.
Mr. Alexander McNeill, M. P., for
North Bruce, was banquettod at Wier -
ton recently on his return from the old
country. His words have the right
Britiah Canadian ring about them, and
THE NEWS 1eco1D has 'pleasure in re-
producing tho following :
"Gentlemen, this Dominion and this
Empire have a glorious future before
them. As the greatest of all English-
men said iu the days of great Eliza-
beth, so we may well say in the
days of great and -good Victoria :
Naugbt can matte tie run if Britons to.
themselves do but prove true.' For my
part, I have confidence in the people
of Canada, T have confidence that they
will hold their own. .I do not be-
lieve theyl•can he cajoled or bribed or
bullied into losing their hold upon the
most magnificent territory and the
most perfect political institutions ever
possessed. by 5,000,000 of people, and
into wantonly severing their connec•
tion with an Empire matchless in the
annals of mankind. There is a good
deal of talk about annexation. Peas
rattle most in an empty box. Let thew
rattle. The more noise they make, the
more men will become aware of the
hollowneos of their case.
'l Mr. Winlan is a good advertiser of
his wares. But the people of Canada
will not easily forget that he publicly
told the people of the United States
that his policy was to put them in pos-
session of what he described as the
' vast riches ' of Canada, to enjoy
which,. he said, Providence had es
pecially created the people of the
neighboring republic. We take leave
to differ with him. • We believe that
Providence has destined
the Dominion
of Canada for the people of Canada,
whose heritage and home and birth-
right it is, and who mean to preserve
it and develop it for themselves and for
their children after them so that it
shall become a mighty nation within a
Still more mighty Empire, under
British institutions, British lawe,
British liberty and the British flag.
We are not ashamed here in Bruce
county to speak• of the British flag.
We are not ashamed of the jibes and
the jeers which, from certain quarters,
are levelled at those who venture to
refer in terms of affectionate respect to
the official symbol of British national-
ity and power.• We are not ashamed
to say that we honor and venerate and
love our country's flag. We are not
to be moved from that attitude towards
it by the bluff and buffoonery on the
part of those who endeavor to belittle
the sentiment of loyalty for their own
dialo,al ends.
"We regard then es infeiior,degoner-
ate and degraded descendants of the
men who founded our Empire and made
the name of Britain famous through-
out the world. We have no quarrel
with our neighbors to the south, neith-
er are we envious of them. We envy
them neither their glory nor their con•
etitution, their negroes, their anarchists
nor their mortgaged arms. We
recognize their many great qualities
and we are proud of their many great
achievements. For we remember that
the flower of their population they owe
to those little islands beyond the sea
that aro so dear to the heart of every
true Canadian. Wo only ask to be
let alone, to work but our own destiny

CANADIAN APPLES.
Ontario hos found out that apple..
alt' among lit•r chief products, but as
yet her si pie Rude is 'iu iia preli-
minary elate 01 fxlelenoe, for there aro
comparatively few growela, sad the
tipples sold are, for the most pail, the
outcome of the.farulers' orchards, lett
pretty much to nature to grow as they
may in a happy golucky way, with
perhaps eornetiures, perhaps never, a
little lazy care given to them. But
Ontario is au Edon fur apples, and its
export trade should be far beyoull its
trial stage by this time. Compared to
what it aught to be our apple bade is
au enormous load every year ; its bpoe•
Bible profit is enorm3us from every
properly cared for apple tree in ti's
tipple Eden. It is herd to L'ealizd tee
litfereuce between unwired for apple
trees iu this apple Edell from the wont
of judicious spraying fur scab and iu•
eeot depreda ions. Apples in cepa it
sections Hits year are a complete fail
tire, and aro not fit to send to a foreign
market.
A rites in an exchange attributes
the ba quality of our apples to the
lack of p open nutriment, and he says
feed you apples. Feed them first
with the un, Let the sun bo tate
Tree, and he boughs the flowers that he
will tour' , one atter another. Prune,
thin, change yonr Irces, so that rho sou
may thine on eat;h bough. 1-Iave Do
rank, superfluous shade. Next feed
them with sunned air, a free, wide
sweep of it, that will dry away damps;
for although the sun in drying damps
liberates the germs of disease held sus
pended in damps, yot he slays them -
destroys them with his heat. So give
your trees fresh air. Then next, clean
your trees, scrape and wash with lime
tie they need it. Then dig as large a
circle around each tree as its top makes
in the air, and keep it free from weeds
and grass; manure and enrich it as it
needs, and find out the right season for
this care, and do it then. November
seems the auxiliary month of the
year -the harvest is in -the barn work
may be done in winter, the ftuit anti
leaves are off the trees -Mere is no
deep snow or hard' frost, and it would
be easy to get at the trees then, and
would save time in the spring.
Suppose now that we exert ourselves
and do not leave out• fruit trees to
nature for food alone, and to the
friendly woodpecker's care in destroy-
ing the larva; of the insects. Suppose
now in this auxiliary time of the year
we treat our trees as scientifically as
they can be treated. Then, depend
upon it, next year we should have an
apple trade that would surprise the
nations. Just think of the strong,
sturdy apples our cold, glorious climate
is capable of producing. . Why should
not such sound fruit that lasts here
nine and ten months, and even a
year, be fit for sea voyages to India,
Australia, New Zealand, Africa; Jama-
ica, to all the British Colonies 1
BLUE LAWS STILL HOLD.
0
Among the decisions handed down
by the Supreme Court at Philadelphia
last week was one confirming the
legality of the old blue law of1.794 in
ralation'to the publication of Sunday
newspapers. The case upon Wliich,thn
decision was rendered was that of
Thomas Matthews, publisher of the
Pittsburg Sunday Leader. Mr. Mat-
thews was convicted of publishing and
issuing his paper on Sunday, D:•cotn•
ber 27, 1891, under the Act of 1794,
whish prohibits the worldly pursuit's
of the Sabbath, save those that are an
absolute necessity fur the wauts of the,
u
community. '1' 1e court snys,that the
framers of the ct of 1701 could not
forsee the growth of newspapers or that
they would possibly have exempted
them under the provisions of the Act.
The court, in conclusion, commends
the Act but says that a too liberal en-
forcement of its provisions may lead to
its repeal.
-Archbishop Fubre, Montreal, has
just issued a nlandeulent on the occas
sion of the episcopal golden wedding
of Pope Leo MIL The document is
a lengthy one and refers to the import
ant career of the Popo and the most
noted events of his pontificate. The
pastoral concludes by ordering special
prayers in all churches during the throe
days preceding Fehr -nary 19th,which is
the date of the 50111 anniversary of tho
episcopal consoaration of the Pope,
and by ordering the chanting of a to
deum in all the same churches on the
day of the anniversary itself.
