"She
Looketh
Well
to the ways of her household."
Yes, Solomon is right; that's what
the good housekeeper everywhere
does, but particularly in Can-
ada.
But her ways are not always
old ways. In fact she has dis-
carded many unsatisfactory old
ways. For instance, to -day she
is using
the New Shortening, instead of
lard. And this is in itself a rea-
son why "she looketh well" in
another sense, for she eats no
lard to cause poor digestion and
a worse complexion.
COTTOLENE is much better
than lard for all cooking pur-
poses, as every one who has tried
it declares. Have you tried it?

CLINTON NEW ERA
li NC7T, J.OKE..
A very absent Minded inemberef the
French Institute was reading the news-
paper in the casino at Dieppe the other
day. Re was. absorbed in his reading,
and with his left hand he uncansclous-
ly pushed the files of newspapers on
the table: Bach inomenthe sent thein
farther from liiin. Beyond the papers
was an inkstand, which at last the
moving rapers pushed over theside of
the table: It fell on the trousers of a.
Paris banker, who was furious at the
accident.
The absent minded than offered his
best excuses without 'appeasing the
banker's wrath, who shrieked that his
new trousers were ruined.
"But, sir, I will cheerfully pay for
them. Be good enough to give me
your Gard, and I will send' the money
to your hotel,”
"To my hotel, sir. I don't know you.
I must instantly have the 30 francs
these trousers cost.
The member of . the institute drew-
forth the,3Afrancs and handed them to
the banker. Then he said :
"Now that you have been paid, I
hope you have too much delicacy of.a
gentleman to remain in my trousers.
You know they are mine, and I insist
upon their immediate delivery to me
You°have no Confidence in me; I have
none in you. My &ters 1"
In vaiun
n the banker protested against
such haste. The crowd that had ggath-
ered' about the disputants said. that the
member of the institute was right, and
the banker, after sending for another
pair of nether gat•tnents, :surrendered
the ink -stained ones, amid the laughter
of the by-standers.
SHE CAME FROM TORONTO.
ASHLAND, Wis., Nov. 20—Mrs Geo.Reany,
of 2111 East Third St., has been in poor
health for some years. Her energetic dis-
position made invalidism doubly irksome
to her, so she sought far and wide for a re-
medy that would make her well again. Her
efforts were unavailing until she began us-
ing Dodd's Kidney Pills. Now she is op
the high road to health and attributes the
result to the use of these pills. Every day
makes it more apparent that many of the
ills to which women are subject are due to
impaired action of the kidneys, if not to
actual disease of the organs. The reputa-
tion of Dodd's Kidney Pills as the greatest
speoific in all disorders of the kidneys is
now irrevocably established, so that all un-
fortunate victims of kidneydieease may use
them with the utmost confidence.
It may be of interest to state that Mrs.
Reany is an old Torontonian.
Joeeph and Edgar Pocock went to
Glenboro, Manitoba, in the spring of
1888, and worked with farmers for
three years. They were careful, steady
boys, aged respectively 19 and 21. In
March of 1892 they rented a farm from
John McDonald, four miles east of
Glenboro, with everything required on
a 380 acre farm. The only claim against
them was a chattel rnortgage on one of
their fourhorses. Last and this year's
crops were good and they paid all their
debts. On October 16 they disappear-
ed. The house was just as if they went
out to work. Their good clothes and
their whole outfit were found intact.
They had over $300 in cash at the time
they left. They had 100 bushels of
wheat and some oats in their granary,
and had 300 bushels of wheat in an ele-
vator, on which they had not collected
the price. A neighbor, Mrs Wallace,
stated that if Bluff lake was searched
ehe`Pocoek boys would he found.. A
search party of eight have left to try
to find the bodies. There are strong
hints of foul play. A man was found
hanging in a staple of the same farm
in August, 1889, and was buried with-
out an inquest. Almost every person
states that the body was dead before
it was hung up.
WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD
C. McDonald, Serpent River, says:—"I

and it has done me more good than all the
remedies I ever tried before. It is worth

bottle. Address Fulford & Co., Brookville.
The post office department an-
nounces the issue of . a new eight cent
registration letter stamp. Formerly
the public went to the stamp wicket
with a three cent stamp and buying a
five cent one made the eight cent
stamp necessary. Five cent stamps
cannot be purchased, and those regis-
terin$' letters will require to purchase
the eight cent stamp issued for that
purpose.

Aoarioas question has arisen with regard
to the death of Mr Charles S. Saxe and his
wife, twq New York victims of the Grand
Trunk collision. They left two Children.
If Mr Saxe died first the wife's relatives
will get the pproperty, which is very large,
but if Mrs Saxe , died first the husbands
heirs would be in luck. The supposition is
that both died instantaneously, although
the 114eb4120's Beira, will urge that the wife,
being supposedly the weaker of the two,
was the first to succumb. A long drawn-
out contest in the New Yprk courts is in
prospect.
up -Science of Medicine
Wonderful Advances made in
the Last Few Yeu. s
HAD SUFFERED GREATLY
UTTERLY HELPLESS BEFORE RELIEF CAME
MR JOHN M'OOVERN, OD TORONTO RELATES AN
EXPERIENCE OF DEEP INTEREST—THE
CASE INVESTIGATED.
Very little is heard by the general public
of the great discoveries in medicine, and the
countless scores of lives that are saved by
the advancing knowledge of medical science.
People who a few years ago were 'left to
drag out a miserable existence as hopleless
invalids, or helpless cripples, are now,
thanks to the advantages medicine has
made, restored to the fulness of health and
strength. Mr John McGovern, who resides
at No. 2 Alpha avenue, in this city, has
good cause to appreciate the truth of the
above statements. Mr McGovern was
formerly an agent for agricultural imple-
ments, and is well known in different parts
of Ontario. A Goble reporter who had
heard that he had been resorted to health
after an illness which threatened to leave
him a hopleless cripple, called upon him at
his residence recently, and was given the
following interesting account of his ease—
"My trouble first began," said Mr Mc-
Govern, "two years ago, when I was living
in the village of Bolton, in the County of
Peel. The trouble was all in my elbows
and knees, and the doctors thought it was
rheumatism. I couldn't walk a block with-
out wanting to sit down, and even to walk
down stairs was bard work. It afflicted
me terribly. I was all right in other ways
but for this terrible weakness. For a year
and a half I suffered from this, but by sheer
force of will held out against it, and man-
aged to get about; about six months ago I
broke down completely, and had to give up
my business. I then moved to Toronto,
and for three months after this I was in a
terrible shape. I was almost always con-
fined to my bed, being able to come down
stairs for a little while perhaps once a day.
I suffered all the time from a terrible sore-
ness in the joints, and at this juncture my
appetite began to fail, and I was only able
to eat the lightest food, and not much of
that. I could find nothing to help me or
give me relief. All this time I was unable
to do anything, and, had I not fortunately
had a little money laid by which enabled
me to go on, I world have been dependent
upon my family for support. Well, while
I was in this terrible shape, my eldest son
prevailed upon me to try Dr Williame'Pink
Pille, and early in last July I began to use
them, and I took them steadily during that
month and the two following months. Be-
fore the first box was finished I began to
get relief, and from that out I steadily im-
proved until I was able to discontinue the
use of the Pink Pills, feeling that I was
fully restored to health. I am satisfied in
my own mind that had it not been for Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills I would have still been
helpless and suffering, and I have much
reason to be thankful that my son persuad-
ed me to use them. Thanks to Pink Pills
I am now a new man and intend soon to re-
sume my. work."
Mr E. Cranfield, druggist, corner of
Amelia and Sackville streets, where Mr
McGovern purchased the Pink Pills, was
seen and said that he believed that they
had done a great good in the case of Mr
McGovern. He knew of many instances
among his customers' in which they had
proved of the greatest benefit, and had used
them with good effect in his own family.—
"I have," said Mr Cranfield, "a larger sale
of Dr Williams' Pink Pills than any other
medicine, and it is a noticeable fact that
they have never gone back in public favor,
which is probably the best proof of the mer-
it of the remedy. I have many customers
who have the greatest faith in Pink Pills,
with very good reason, and I never hesitate
to recommeod them to my ouetomers, know -
ing that seldom or never do they fail to give
satisfaction."
Dr Williams' Pink Pills are a perfect
blood builder and nerve restorer, curing
such diseases as rheumatism, neuralgia,
partial paralysis, locomotor ataxia, St. Vi-
tus' dance, nervous headache, nervous pros-
tration and the tired feeling therefrom, tbe
after effects of la grippe, diseases de end-
ing:upon humors in the blood, such asiscro-
fula, chronic erysipelas, eto. Pink Pills
give a healthy glow to pale and sallow Com-
plexions, and aro a specific for the troubles
peculiar to the female system, and in the
case of men they effect a radical core in all
cries arising from mental worry, cverwork,
or excess of any nature.
Bear in mind Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
are never sold in balk, or by the dozen or
hundred, and any dealer who offers sub-
etitutes in this form is trying to defraud
you and should be avoided., Ask your
dealer for Dr. Williame' Pink Pills for Pale
People and refuse all imitations and sub-
stitutes.
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills may be had of
all druggists or direot by mail from Dr.
