It was at Detroit, Lansing and North ern train, corning ,cast, the eithee day, and, while 0. stop was beingmade at Sri hton a young man wth a good deal of red on his bands and face, and his boots covered With. yellow dust. of country highway, sought out thecon, ductal' all the platform anti asked; "Is there a young fel er ou your trails who sells prize packages?" "Mercy, no!" replied the conductor. "We haven't had a prize package bend on this road for Years. Did you want to see hint?" "For just about thirty .seconds!" grimly answered the young man, "If I couldn't make his heels break Iiia neck in thirty seconds I'd give up the job!" "Anything wrong?" "Well, about six years ago I was on this train combs' from Detroit. I was mindin' wy ownbusiness whenayoung feller came along and wants me to buy a prize package—paper, envelopes, pens, led pencils and all o' that for a quarter, with a prize throwed in. I was kinder bashful and green them days, and he finally bulldozed me into buy - in'." "Well ?" "Well here's the prize I got—this lit- tle locket. rare had over twenty men look at it, and all say it's brass and not worth two cents. I've been a keepin' it." "I see." "I've been a keepin' it till I could find that 'tarnal swindler." "The day will come when I shall find him. Then I shall take him by the neck, open his jaws and make him swaller the locket at a gulp, and if it don't kill him in about two minutes, I will `Well, don't make any mistake about it," saki the conductor, as he signalled the engineer to go ahead. "Oh ! I shan't. It's six long years, but I've got that deceiver's picture right afore my eyes, and I can't mis- take him. He won't be lookin' fur me, and I'll jest walk up to him and reach out this way—and biff 1 bill 1 this way —and gouge his right eye out—and knock his left eyebrow off—and—and 1" And as the conductor swung himself aboard the train the young man was putting his big red fists against the boards of the station house in a way to make the shingles rattle. GIVE US A CHANCE. Ontario has carried off the honors for honey at the World's Fair. Her exhibits have taken twenty awards, as against twenty-eight for all the United States and thirteen for all the other countries. It is very noticeable that it is the unprotected industries, the in- dustries that cannot be protected by tariff, the industries which do a large export trade, that are doing honor to Canada. Butter, cheese, cattle, sheep, and agricultural products of all kinds wfich, far from being benefited by protection are actually injured by it, achieve victories in the wor id's contests where competition is open. The pro- tection -coddled industries are weak- lings which are a burden rather than a help. Give our farmers free play and relief from tariff duties for a while, and they will soon build up this country and restore its general prosperity. What is needed is British free trade. -- Montreal Witness. C Then Baby was sick, we gave leer Castoria• when she was a Chad, she cried for Castoria. v" lei. she became Mies, abe clung to Castoria. t"hen shehadChildren,dr9gave them Castorla WHY DID HE RESIGN? There are many views being taken and many theories being advanced re- garding Mr Hugh John Macdonald's withdrawal from the Dominion Parlia- ment. This one following, taken from the Ottawa Free Press, would appear to have something in it: "The retirement. of Mr Hugh John Macdonald from parliament cuts the Thompsonian Ministry adrift from all association with the great personal following v.hich the late leader of the Conservative party acquired during his lengthy and political career. The Thompsonians made desperate efforts to keep Mr Macdonald in public life, and as a last resort offered h m the Lieuteuant-Governorship of Manitoba. But Sir John's son would accept no- thing at the hands of the Thompson- ians, neither would he remain in Par- liament to help them. And thousands of Conservatives who followed Sir John Macdonald, will feel absolved from all allegiance to the Tompson -Caron com- bination by Hugh John's resignation. If Mr Macdonald had any regard for the present federal ministry he would have remained in parliament. It turns out that the Government have themselves to thank for losing an influential supporter in Parliament. Mr Hugh John Macdonald, the late member for Winnipeg, is a relative by marriage of Mr Vankotrghnet, late De- puty Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and when the latter gentleman was dismissed from office and placed on the superannuation list, Mr Macdon- ald wrote to him, stating that the ac- tion of the Government was "the last straw," which caused him to peremp- torily order Mr Daly to render up his resignation of his seat in Parliament to the Speaker. Samuel Houston,a sheriff's assistant, left in charge of a lot of chattels near Whitby, disappeared on Sunday with sixteen headp of cattle, four head of horses and two sets of harness. Last Thursday night or early Friday morning burglars effected an entrance to the store of Thos. Lawrence, hard- ware merchant Lucknow. They se- cured about $200 worth of cutlery, but left all the boxes, so that no marks would be left on the stolen goods by which they might be identified. • The front door was pried open from the I bottom, so as to burst off the holder of the lock. The constable has the case in hand. t POLITE RJ QUEST.. Between Philadelphia. and Washin ton is glue factory which 'swells to. .heaved,' .A lady "who was obliged to take the tido between those two point always carried with her a, bottle or lavender salts. One morning an old ,nein took the seat directly behind her. As the train owed the .factory the lady opened her bottle of salts. Soon, the wholecar was filled with; the h.or- rible oder of thelue. The old manstood it as long as he could, then lean- ing forward, he shouted 'Madam, Would you mind puttin' the cork in that bottle?" CURE SUPPRESSION QF THE MENSES. Mr J. A. P. for the Conservative hive of Cardwell, will this week be gazetted to the long -va- cant position of collector of customs of Montreal. Herculean efforts will be indulged in to defeat, if possible, the McCarthy candidate, who isDr.Henryy, of Orangeville. The Government would sooner lose Ottawa and Winnipeg to- gether than Cardwell.
