of a cat playing with a mouse has -be-
come somewhat distasteful to me since
that experience. I have acquired so
keen a sympathy for the mouse.
•
I did not feel horror-stricken; in
fact, so far as I can remember, •I felt
only a dim sense of resignation to the
inevitable. I also remember that I no-
ticed with curious interest that the
animal looked rather gratified than
ferocious.
I don't know how long I lay there,
stupidly gazing up into the brutes eyes.
but presently I inade a movement to
sit up, and then I saw that I still held
my rifle in my hand. While I was
looking at the weapon, with a vague,
harassing sense that there was some-
thing I ought to do with it, the tiger
picked me up by the left shoulder and
made off with me into the jungle; and
still I clung to the rifle, though I had
forgotten what use I should put it to.
The grip of the tiger's teeth upon my
shoulder 1 felt but numbly, and yet, as
I found afterwards, it was so far from
gentle as to have shattered the bone.
Having carried me perhaps a mile,
the brute dropped me and raised her
head, uttered a peculiar, soft cry. Two
cubs appeared at once in answer to the
summons and bounded up to meet her.
At the first glimpse of me, however,
they sheered off in alarm, and their
dam had to coax thein for some min-
utes; rollin me over softly with her
paw, or picking me up and laying me
down in front of thein, before she
could convince.themn that I was har••-
less.
At last the youngsters suffered them-
selves to he persuaded. They threw
themselves upon me with eager though
not very dangerous ferocity and began
to Inaul and worry me. Their claws
and teeth seemed to awaken me for the
first time to the sense of pain. I threw
off the snarling little animals and start-
ed to crawl away. In vain the cubs
tried to hold me. The mother was
watching the game with satisfaction.
Instinctively I crept towards a tree,
and little by little the desire to escape
began to -stir in my dazed brain. When
Iwas within a foot or twolof the t res, the
tiger made a great hound, seized the in
her jaws and carried me back to the
spot whence I had started.

"Why," thought I to myself, " s
just exactly the way a cat plays with a
mouse!'
At the same mom' nt a cloud seemed
to roll off my brain. No words of mine
can describe the measureless and sick-
ening horror of that moment, when
realization was thus suddenly flushed
upon me.
At the shock my rifle slipped from
my relaxing fingers; but I recovered it
desperately, with a sensation as if I
was falling over a precipice.
I knew not what I wanted to o
with it. The suddenness of my gesture,
however, appeared to warn the tiger
that I had yet a little too much life in
me. She growled and shook

time looking to my rifle. I saw that
therr was a cartridge ready to be pro-
jected into the chamber. I remember-
ed that the magazine was not: more
than half empty.
I started once more to crawl away,
with the cubs snarling over me and
trying to hold me; and it was at this
point that I realized that my left
shoulder was broken.

(From the.Kemptville Advance.)
One of the besb known men in the county
of Grenville and the adjo'ning county of
Carleton is Mr Hugh Brownlee, of Korupt-
' ville. Mr Brownlee was born in Carleton
county, in the year 1834, and until about
five years ago resided in the township of
North Gower. Having by industry and
good business ability acquired a ,competence
he determined to retire from the somewhat
laborious life of a farmer, and taking up his
abode in a beautiful home in the village of
Kemptville has since continued to reside
here. It is well known to Mr I3rownlee's
friends and acquaintances that be has suf-
fered for years from sciatica of a violent
form, and it has lately been understood that
he bas at last been relieved from the pangs
of this excruciating:disease. Recently while -
in conversation with Mr Brownlee, a re-
porter of the Advance asked him to give
his experience for the benefit of other suf-
ferers, which he gladly consented to do.
"You are aware," said Mr Brownlee,
"that most of my life has been spent upon
a.farn-4 and in addition to farming/I-fol-
lowed the business of buying cattlei sheep
and lambs, In doing so I was expcjsed to
all sorts of weather -and over exertion, whichi
brought on severe attacks of sciatica. I
suffered for about ten years, trying all sorts
of powerful remedies, but without doing me-
a particle of good. During this long period
of suffering I was deprived of mnch sleep,
and many a night I tumbled about in bed:
nearly all night long, suffering the moat
excruciating pains. In fact I was rapidly
approaching the condition of a chronic
cripple. I bad tried so manysemedies that
I was becoming discouraged, and almost
despaired of obtaining relief. While in this
condition I was induced to try Dr.Willianss'
Pink Pills. I took the pills for some time
without any noticeable results, but feeling
as. if they werea last resort I continued
\their nse. Then came a slight change for
the better, mill every day added to my
steady improvement, until now, after the
use of about eighteen boxes I am nearly as
well as ever 1 was, being almost entirely
free from pain.. I am still using Dr. Wil•
Hams' Pink Pills, and feel confident that
my cure will be permanent You may he
sure that E am grateful for what Pink Pills
have done for me, and I am only too glad
to bear testimony to their merit. Indeed,
I believe they are deserving of eveny good
thing that can be said of them."
Mrs Brownlee was prrsent and said that
she, too, could vouch for the beneficial
effects derived from the use of Pink Pills.
She had suffered for nearly four years with
terrible soreness and pains in the back of
the head and neck, accompanied by frequent
attacks of dizziness, which caused great
distress and inconvenience. Having ob-
served the beneficial effects Pink Pills had
upon her suffering husband, Mrs Brownlee
determined to try them, and from the out-
set found relief, and after the use of four
boxes four d that the serene, 0 was all gone,
and for the past three months she had
been almost' entirely free from pain. She
has the greatest confidence in Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills and believes them the greatest
medicine of the age.

A YOUNG LADY's EXPERIENCE.
Having heard that Miss Delia Main, a
young lady who lives with her parents not
far from Mr Brownlee's residence, bad also
been greatly benefited by the nee of Pink
Pills, the reporter next called upon her.
Miss Main is a handsome young lady 18
years of age, with the glow of health in her
cheeks. In reply to inquiries, Mia Main
said that some two years ago she began to
be affected with weakness peouliar to many
young girls. Her fade was pale, she was
troubled with heart palpitation, and the
least exertion left a feeling of great tired-
ness. She•had good medical treatment but
without getting relief, and at last her con-
dition became so bad that her parents and
friends feared that she was going into a
decline and almost despaired of her recovery.
M this• jnnctnre Miss Main was induced to
try Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, which are an
unfailing specific in cases of this kind.
Having lost all confidence in medioine, Miss
Main took Pink Pills irregularly at first,
tut, finding that- they were Helping her, she
began to take them regularly, according to
directions, From this time out improve-
ment in her case was steady and rapid, and
after the IMO of a dozen boaes she found.
herhealth fully restored. t"I believe," said
Miss Main, "that if it had not been for Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills I would not be alive
