The flying years, the silent yore,
Swept o'er this safely hidden page,
Till Time, that deep -sunk mystery clears,
Gives me the dateless heritage.
Where beat the heart, where burnt the brain,
That all this, pain and passion felt
On leavee.detaced by mold and stain
The secret of a Lite is spelt.
Why rashly Wt, why rudely rend,
the softening veil that Death and Time,
Conspiring Lite with Art to blend,
Have hung between her soul and mine ?
Enough to know, enough to feel,
That one immortal bhae endures ;
The love these ardent words reveal

HOME AGAIN.
Back to the home of my childhood and
youth,
And the scenes of happy girlhood;
Back from wanderings in alien climes,
To the dear old farm and wildwood;
Back tothe hauntsofmy earliest -days,
When I first learned to love and to pray;
Beek- from-the--told-selfish-glare- of -the-
world,
told-selfish glare--of-the-
world, 0
To the home where I e'er would stay.
As the silv'ry rays of the pearly morn
Steal up from the flushed, rosy east,
*The sable curtains of alight are withdrawn,
And nature from darkness released:
The phantom' shadows are driven aback.
By the fairy fingers of day,
And the silken ehaide of slumber unloosed
By the matin song of the jay.
The cooling zephyrs, violet perfumed,
Float my wide-open casement through.
As the incense of morning prayer is borne.
Up and beyond the Heaven'a
With heart heart o'erflowing with glad eceitaoy,
And contentment regnant supreme,
I stroll as of yore 'mid the morning mists,
Or the rising sun's glist'ning gleam.
Ere the drops of the morning's opaline
dew
By the sun have been kissed away,
Back through the long, lone lane with
flowers lit,
By mem'ryattended I stray,
Back past the barn where in girlhood I
played,
And the spring with its limpid stream,
Back through the meadows, and down to
the wood, -
I wander as if in a dream.
When the proud king of light his sceptre
wields,
And his rays and fair flowers fade,
I hie me away to the rustic seat,
'Nesth the apple -bough's friendly shade,
Where the fragrance of pink -tinted
blossoms
Bee -haunted, sweet mem'ries renew;
Or the carol, exultant, of sky lark,
As he mounts to the azure bine.
The babbling brook murmurs on its mad
way
And the fall's far-off moan I hear,
When the humming bird fiite the flow'rs
among -
A realm of enchantment so dear.
The scene has not obanged through the roll
of years,
Though in life cad changes we come
(Since here I last romped in innocent glee,
Dear father has hence been borne home.)
When the fierce orb his course has run,
And has dipp'd in the purple west,
The drowsy tinkle of -herd -bell is hushed,
And the noisy world isat rest4,---
As the silv'ry radiance of lambent light
From the oreecent moon brightly beams,
I list to the whip -poor -will's vesper lay,
'Meng the trees where the lakelet gleams.
Down the verdant slopes, to Its wooded

Where the waves kiss its pebaaled strand;
When the skiff lies moored lby a rnsty

Drawn upon the glistening elan :

O'er the isle which afar off lies,
When the murmuring wavelet of silver

Secret of Mrs. Cleveland's Popularity.
Many people have asked : "What is the
secret of Mre. Cleveland's universal popu-
larity?" It is not at all a hard question to
answer, according to the San Francisco Ex-
aminer, and all who know her will agree
that it is Mrs. Cleveland's utter unselfish-
ness which gives her a popularity which
perhaps no other woman has so fully at-
tained. Mre. Cleveland possesses those in-
definable qualities and characteristics
which go to make up the perfect woman.
The material is so fully developed in her
nature that she cannot see a little
child anywhere, no matter how poor
and ragged it may be, but she will if
possible stop and say a kind word to it.
There is one duty Mrs. Cleveland never
permits another to perform, and that, le to
her the sweetest pleasure in life—rocking
her baby to sleep every evening. Mrs.
Cleveland's sweetness and tenderness to-
ward old people is always noticeable. Her
patience and self-possession are remarkable.
Under circumstances of the moat trying na-
ture, where most women would show signs
of being annoyed, she maintains a calmness
of demeanor that is marvelous. Mre. Cleve-
land is fond of her home, kind to her ser-
vants, gentle to all, and yet with thio
sweetness of nature she posse:zee great
firmness and individuality of character.
She bas the courage of her convictions, and
nothing will induce her to break the rules
she deems necessary to make for her daily
life.

Justice Rose has addressed a long lett
ter to Sir Oliver Mowat urging that the
Government take over the control and
management of the poor instead of
leaving it in the hands of local author-
itesto do so. The Judge's letter was
prompted by the fact that when hold-
ing the assizes at Stratford and else-
where he saw much hardship resulting
from indigent persons being confined
in jail. This is the direct outcome of
having no proper place provided [for
the poor. It is an exceeding delicate
thing for the government to do as Jus-
tice Rose suggests; and how far they
will go in that direction is exceedingly
uncertain. It is likely that if the
municipalities still refuse to provide
Houses of'Refuge, after the liberal as-
sistance offered by the government,
that Iegislation may be passed requir-
ing the erection and maintenance of
such places in all municipalities.
A LONG PROCESSION
of diseases start from a torpid liver
and impure blood. Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery cures ev-
ery one of them. It prevents them,
too. Take it, as you ought, when
yon feel the first symptoms (lan-
guor, loss of appetite, dullness, de-
pression) and you'll save yourself
from something serious.
In building up needed flesh and
strength, and to purify and enrich
the blood, nothing can equal the
" Discovery." It invigorates the
liver and kidneys, promotes all the
bodily functions, and brings back
health and vigor. For Dyspepsia,
" Liver Complaint," Biliousness, and
all Scrofulous, Skin and Scalp Dis-
eases, it is the only remedy that's
guaranteed to benefit or cure, or
the money is refunded.
