MONTREAL LIVE STOCK MARKET
Live stook shippers are a thoroughly dis-
heartened and disgusted lot of men to -day.
On Monday last there was every indication
that there was. to be an improvement in
the British markets, and the shippers were
hoping for small margins of profit to -day,
but the weather bas upset all their calcu-
lations. The weather. in Liverpool and
London, so the gables say, was tropical,
and prides in consequence dropped to 50
and 5/d for the very finest beast. There
were about 700 head of butcher's cattle, 150
calves, 460 sheep and lambe, and 50 lean
hogs and small pigs offered at theLEdat
Elfd abattoir, to -day. Trade was fairly
good but there Was a break in pricee of 611
kinds of cattle, the decline alnee last Thdrs-
day being tally One gnarteii df 6 Dent per lb.
in good cattle, and more than that in lean
stook, as there was an over supply of lean-
ish grass-fed beef 3ritters, many of them
being too lean for profitable killing, and
should have remained at grass for five or
six weeks longer. The best cattle to -day
sold at from 4o to 4/o per Ib., with pretty
good stook at from 4c to 410 do, and the
leaner beasts at from less than 30 per ib.,
up to 3/o do.
