death of.11r Alexander Johnson, for
many years, a well-known banker in
Strathroy, and a. member of the 'old
.firm of Johnston, Tiede!' & Gale, Clin-
ton, occurred at his residence, 596
Ituron St,, Toronto. shortly after one
o'clock•Fridayy afternoon, after a long
and severe illness. He had been ail-
ing for abouttwo)years and the,malady.
was of such a nature that his friends
felt that recove was out of the ques-
tion. His death, therefore, was not
`unexpected. Mr Johnston was a na-
tive of Adelaide, where he grew up to
ntlinhood, and at the age of 18, or in
1800,,he opened a store in Strathroy,
*here he :pro. pered, in business for
eight years. In 1868, he organized a
•
private bank, and in this�venture also
he :vas for taany years very •successful.
During the :thine he wasin the banking
line he speculated largely in stocks anti
real estate and was reputedly waatthy,.

The Entrance Examinationcommences

gan. Miss Hattie Sibley is home on a
visit. We are informed that Mr John
McMillan, who recently took a lot of
cattle to Glasgow, did not make a big
haul out of them, having unfortunatel
struck a bad market. On Saturday Mr
Carling sold two of the buildings, in
the .Dodsworth row; Mr W. Butler
buying one and Mr Geo. Lavis the
other; he has still two for sale, which
can be bought cheap. Mrs Large, of
Listowell, has been visiting her sister,
Mrs E. Turner, Word was last week
received fram Mr C. Milne, just prior
to his departure on the ocean, saying
that he already felt in much better
health, and expected to come back
fully restored,' Reeve. Kerr, . of Brus-
sels, passed. through town on Wednes-
day, on hie way to Godericli to attend
the wedding of his brother-in-law Mr
Kay, assistant postmaster of Stratford,

Gilpin, who was taken so seriously ill
at Owen Sound, is now recovering; he
has decided to take as year's rest.

in 40 minutes. and on Monday R.
Holmes went to Londesboro in 30 min-
utes during the warmest part of the
day. .Mr James Steep is doing quite a
trade in hogs this year, making heavy
shipments weekly. Mrs H. B. Chang.
is visiting at St. Catharines. • Misses
Beesley and Smith left on .a visit to
Moosejaw, on Monday. An excursion
under the auspices of the West Huron
1{armer's Institute, will be run to the
Model Farm, on Tuesday, 27th June;
the fare from Clinton is only $1; the
trip includes Wingham and interven-
ing stations, and Goderich. Mrs.Thos.
Archer, of Hullett, left here on Wed-
nesday, on a visit to relatives . in Dako-
ta. Rev. J. Ferguson, of Granton,call-
ed on a few of his friends in town, on
Tuesday, while on his way home from
Londesboro. Rev. R. Henderson, of
Auburn, returned from Synod on Wed-
nesday. Rev. W. Smyth is away at
Toronto this week. Dr. Shaw was a
guest at a wedding in Goderich, Wed-
nesday; he will be the principal in one
some of these days. Mrs. Joe Clark,
Toronto is visiting here. The next
stock fair will be held on the 5th July.
A conference of the Brethren is in ses-
sion at Brantford this week; about 15
members of the Society here are in at-
tendance. A couple of gentlemen troin
Prince Albert, Assa., were here this
week endeavoring to purchase a ear of
Short -horn and Polled -Angus bulls,. for
a government ranch In the.northwest.
Tee Mouth Organ Band goes out to
Mr. Lowery's''school pic-nic in Hullett,
to -day. Mr. Bond, Toronto, and his
daughter, Mrs. Grey, are theguests of

Mr, J. L. Doherty has opened a train-
ing stable in Mr. Farrah s large barn;
and has already, a good string of dyers,

son had on exhibition here for a few
days, a Carnot Scorcher, done up in
white enani,el; it was greatly admir-
ed, and has been sold to Mr. J. Marks,
of Bayfield. Messrs. Geo, Carter, of
Londesboro, and Chas. Burling, Myth,
