last week to lose a fine, foal from his

of Chicago, late of Brucefield, is back
winding up his affairs preparatory to

mits there are features of life there
objectionable to a Canadian, who has
not:been accustomed to the looseness
of morals which prevail to afar greater _

d'ay here. Clinton -Lodge was -not- re --
presented at the meeting of the District
Temperance Lodge, in Lucknow, on
Tuesday, although six delegates had
been appointed.
ENTERTAn i Ear.—The Good Tem-
plars purpose holding an entertain-
ment in their lodge room, on the ev-
ening of the 20th ,inst. Several free
meetings have been held by the socie-
ty, but it is intended to take a silver
collection at the door for this one, in
order to raise funds that may help for-
ward the temperance cause. Mr Jas.
Scott, barrister, will give an address(
on. "the legal aspect of the temper-
ance (iuestlon, , and a good program
of music and readings will be rendered
in addition, so that in no respect will
,° the entertainment be anything but
first-class. A. good turnout is looked
-for.
DEAT>zs.—Brief mention was made
last week of the death of Mrs Carter,
wife of Mr Geo. Carter, who had at-
tained the ageof 78 years. Deceased
has for some time been troubled with a
cancer in the stomach, and her suffer-
ings have been intense, but they were
borne with Christian fortitude. She
was born in Hailsham, Sussex, Eng.,
and came to Canada, with her hus-
band, some20years ago, residing here
continuously. She was a member of
the, Baptist church. She is spoken of
as one of the best of neighbors and one
in every way worthy of esteem and
respect. She leaves two sons and a
daughter, the latter residing in Eng-
land, unmarried. One of her sons is
Mr 'Samson Carter, of East Wawa -
nosh; the other resides in Sanilac
County, Mich. ' After an exceedingly
painful illness, Mrs Hancock, wife of
Mr John Hancock, of town, died on
Sunday morning, at the advance age
of 70 years; she leaves one daughter
,here -Mrs H. Cook, of town -and two
eons in Michigan; she was a member of
the 'Ontario St. Methodist church, and
her life and death was one of implicit
reliance upon the Saviour. She was
thrice married, the last time covering
a period of 41 years. A memorial ser-
vice will be held in Ontario St. church,
on the morning of the 28th inst.
CATTLE -During the past few days a
lot of cattle were delivered here for
Messrs Groff, of 'Waterloo; Smith, of
Clinton; and Watson, of Blyth.

We are informed that Mr W. Downs,

ago for his health, has not improved,
and will return to Ontario; his wife is
at present at Auburn. Mrs Savelle is
away at Woodstock, ministering to
the wants of her eldest brother, who
has been stricken down with aparala-
tic stroke, and now lies in a veru criti-
cal condition; her ability in a sick room
is well known in Clinton, therefore her
services will be much a reciated

Worthington leases in a few days on a
visit to her sister, Mrs Small, of Win-
nipeg; she will afterwards take up her
residence permanently in Chicago.
Miss Mary Hine has been suffering for
a couple of weeks by a severe attack of
erysipelas. A gentleman lost a ten
dollar bill on the street the other day;
he will be agreeably surprised and
grateful also if the Hider will return
it to him; if left at this office we will
see that he gets it. Mr Geo. Hinchley,
who travels considerably over this
county, states that the fall wheat
looks well in every section which he
has visited. Cornelius Donovan, Esq.,
of Hamilton, Separate School Inspec-
tor for Ontario, was in town on Tues-
day, having been inspecting the schools
at Drysdale and Hullett. Mr John
Robinson, son of Mrs Robinson, of the
Huron road, who for some time has
been employed at Grand Rapids, Mich.,
has recently been appointed superin-
tendent of a large furniture factory at
Holland City, Mich. Dame rumor
states that a young man of town and a
Hullett lady will be wedded on the
24th'inst. It is said that Miss Cook, of
the Huron road, and Miss McDonald,
of Wingham, will start a dressmaker's
establisment on Albert St., in a few
days. Mr J'acob Miller has added a
steam pump to his establishment, to
be operated in connection with his
water supply business. Miss Dicken-
son, dressmaker of this town, has re-
turned for a short time to Wingham.
Miss Blanch Thrower left on Thurs-
day for Hamilton. Mrs J. Chidle , jr.,
has gone on a visit to friends in Toron-
to. Miss Aggie McGarda is visiting in
Hensall. Mr F. S. Spence, of Toronto,
Secretary of the Dominion Alliance,
was in town for a short tirce on Wed-
nesday; he had been attending the
District Convention at Lucknow. Mrs
E. Mason, who has been visiting her
daughter,has returned home. Mrs Lo-
gan, of East Saginaw, is visiting , her,
parents here, The grocers of town
have all agreed to close their places of
business at 7 o'clock each evening, ex-
cept Saturday and evenings that pre-
cede holidays. Mr T. Jackson, jr., is
this week in Toronto. Mr J. W. Sal-
ter left here on Wednesday for Sault
Ste. Marie, to work on the canal there.
Mrs J. Spooner and Miss Leary spent
Sunday in Wingham. The County
has appealed against the decision of the
arbitrators in the Morris bridge award.
There will be no sitting of the Division
Court until. the 29th of June. The
Forester's entertainment, next Tues-
day evening, will be a good one. A
