On Saturday evening Chief Dunlop, of Seaforth, received a telegraphic mes- sage from St Marys, asking if a man named Oaks was wanted there. Con- stable Dunlop wired back, "Yes, arrest him at once; he is wanted for burglary." St Marys order a In obedience to thisy officer arrested Oaks about 8.30 the same evening, and started for the lock- up with him. The 'prisoner, however. seized a favorable, opportunity,..and broke away, going "through the river. When about the middle of the stream he turned and covered the constable with a revolver, then made his way to the opposite bank and disappeared. He has not been seen since. This was the man wbo burglarized the stores of Messrs C. W. Papst and Jackson Bros., in Seaforth, some time ago. Counterfeiters are on the track of Wil- liams' Royal Crown Remedy. " Bowie vs. The Municipality of Hul- lett, was a case which created a good deal of interest at the last Division Court in Seaforth. Mr Bowie is the lessee of a piece of land in the swamp on the 4th concession near the farm of Mr D. McGregor. The concession lead- ing past this land, he claims, is impass- able and on account of the bad state of the road he lost a horse, was unable to get in his fall wheat, and also lost the sale of a lot of cedar posts, for. all of which he claims from the township damage to the amount of $60. The township disputes the claim on the ground that the road is not required in the public interests. The Judge reser v - ed his decision. A verdict of manslaughter was re- turned at the Middlesex assizes, Thurs- day, against Burke and Wilson, the men charged with killing Detective Harry Phair, of London. In Milwaukee 5,100 converts are re- ported as the result of evangelistic ser- vices held by Revivalist Mills. A registered letter containing $50 and some small change,was stolen from Smithfield, Ont., post office on Tuesday night. The door was broken open yvith a chisel. No arrests yet. Prof. Robertson, Dominion Dairy Commissioner, has received from the English tea merchant who purchased Canada's mammoth cheese, a pound of tea valued at 22 guineas. The tea will he distributed among the Cabinet Min- isters. It was discovered by the Port Hope firemen on Wednesday night, that the fire in Trinity College school was caus- ed by incendiarism. Three men, one named Mace another Johnson and the other unknown, had been sinking a small coal shsft. About 9 o'clock the men were at work in their blacksmith shop, when a piece of red-hot iron flew into a box containing 50 sticks of dynamite.
