Pasturing Cattle Compared with Feeding
. Them in tite Stable -Tire Fara', Roller
-New email Fruits -Pointers au All
Topics,
Pasturing cattle is perhaps the most ox•
pensive of all methods, as more laud is re-
quired, but it is not an .easy mutter to con-
vince armers of that fact. The same land,
if so cultivated that the crops can be led to
the cattle at the barn, will give better re-
sults. Trite, the cost of the labor will be
greater, but the profits will also bo larger.
Machinery, and improved implements of
farming will at some time in the future
change the system of pasturing to that of
soiling.
•
The Keiper pear grows rapidly and
seems to escape blight. While the fruit
is in no manner to be compared ; to
the Bartlett in quality, yet it is considered
very desirable by canners and for preserv-
ing.
resort/ing.
The farm roller may be used with ad.
vantage on fields that t have been thrown
up by the frost. Wheat. oat end rye
mil be benefited thereby, and tied toots
pressed bank into the eoil, although etfdb
work cannot be done until the ground
is hard enough to permit the teams to go
on it.
It is claimed that each acro of land should
support one cow for a year. This has been
done where ensilage was grown and the
land made to produce its fullest capaoity.
The attempt to make an acre keep one
cow loads to skill in cultivation, and the
nee of the best breeds in order to gain in all
directions.
e
After the planting season begins it will
be to the advantage of every farmer to ex-
periment. Instead of planting a field with
some new variety let the seed be first test-
ed on a `moll plot. It will bo time enough
to give up the old and tried varieties for
those that are newer and improved after
the new 1►inds have been found to be more
suitable for the purpose and better adapted
to the soil and climate.
The introduction of new varieties of
small fruits is completely changing the ap-
pearance and quality of some of them. The
strawberry of to -day is nearly four times as
large as the kinds grown 10 years ago.
When the trees or vines pre trimmed, the
refuse should be carefully removed, every
piece being secured, if possible, and the
whole burned, as a safeguard against in.
sects. When black knot, or fungus growth,
is removed from trees, the detached limbs
will spread the disease, as well tee the limbs
on the trees that may be affected. Use fire
whenever it can be done.
Old beds of strawberries often become
full of weeds. The best tray to clean the
land is to plow the beds as soon as the crop
is picked, and grow a crop of late potutoea -
on the plot.
Sweet potatoes are kept only under the
most fovorable conditions. One of the
causes of this early -rotting of sweet potatoes
is the carelessness in handling thein. They
should be free from bruises or blemishes,
and the barrels should never be rolled. A
few injured potatoes in the barrel may
cause the whole to begin to decay.
The scales on the farm will. give the
farmer . more . instruction in feeding than
may be supposed. Many animals are
making no gain, although not suffering
from loss of appetite. Weigh the stools
sometimes.
When the frost throws out the wheat or
clover, it indicates that drainage of the
land would be an advantage. Wet
landwill always suffer more from expansion
8nd contraction, due to alternate freezing
and thawing, than, that which is dry and
well drained.
When prices for a certain crop are high,
the prospect is then good for a large
crop the nett year,. the good prices being
the inducement, while low .prices have
the reverse effect. An excellent rule a to
follow is to grow the crop that others do
not desire, as it may happen that the article
will be in greater demaud and the supply
limited.
Clover is the great green manurial crop.
No farm will ever fail in fertility if clover
is given a place in the rotation of crops. It
not only affords hay for the cattle, but pre-
pares the land with plant food for some
crop that follows. The first duty of a far-
riier, when purchasing a farm, is to getin a
crop of clover.
A row of Norway spruce or American
arbor vita; will provide an excellent wind -
brake in a few years, as wen as ornament
the grounds. They are cheap, easily pro-
cured and thrive well under nearly all con-
ditions.
Small farms can be made to pay weil, ana
the farmer or .gardeuer who cultivates a
small farm as it should be will find himself
pressed with all the work he can do. Over
4,000 heads of cabbage can be grown on Duo
acre and allow of horse cultivation, and if
wheel hops are used (by hand), the crop can
be doubled.
More wastes occur in farming than in
any other pursuit. While the merchant
will estimate hi
srefits as
p close as the one -
I eighth of a cent on the dollar invested, and
practice economy in all departments, the
, fanner allows waste to occur in the fields
and in the barns. Ono of the first
duties is to avoid loss, and the feed trough
is the point where the largest waste is
made.
Instead of placing traps in the rune of
males, an enterprising farmer in the West
opens small holes in the tunnels here and
there, and pours in a little cheap molasses.
The moles become disgusted and leave.
Coal tar would probably answer the sane,
purpose.

Dir Wm. Prondergwst, of the township of

is !tnown to almost all in this section, and

hope of his recovery, Mr Prendergast's

Brief temporary relief might eneno ; it
was always very brief when the dread
fomenter returned to smite him with fresh
agony. In this condition Mr Prendergast
continued until last summer, when th
physician frankly told him that hie Das
was inourable. The news name as a terribl

Such was she condition of affairs at th
close of last summer and a little later i
was understood that Mx Prendergast wa
a 3tting better, and on the way to recovery
Lately one of his friends while is the Her
ald sanctum remarked, "Prendergast is on
his feet again and as sound se a bell." In
quiry naturally followed as to what had
produced thie remarkable result, and we
were informed that his recovery was solely
due to the use of Dr. Williame'•Pink Pills,
for Pale People. The Herald had publish-
ed the partionlare of many remarkable
oures by the nee of this remedy, and while
not by any means sceptical, felt a strong
desire to verify a case in our locality, and
accordingly drove to Mr Prendergast'e. On
reaching the house it was ascertained that
Prendergast was soma distance away in
the field mending a fence. Thither the
scribe wended his way, meeting with cordi-
al welcome and an invitation to come back
to the house to dinner. after dinner the
urged him to tell about the remarkable
change that had taken place in his condi-
tion. t first he was inclined to put ns off,
saying that he hated to think of the old
day of agony and misery. However at last
be told us all he had undergone, his story
bearing out what has been trail concerning
his nouditton.
After the doctor had given bile up, his
wife, hoping against hope, had urged him to
try 1)r. Williame' Pink Pills. He scouted
the idea at first, saying that these things
were all humbugs, 4t last, more to please
hie wife than anything eleo, he sent to Com-
ber for some of the Pink fills. He had not
taken them many days when. he found they
were giving him relief. The pain leldeened,
his appetite began to return, and so die
liopCand confidence. He procured another
supply and found himself growing daily
stronger. He felt that he could walk
through the fields without the fear of being
stricken down by a sudden pain. Later
be resumed work on his farm and found, to
his amazement that he could do' a hard
day's work without fatigue. In a word
that he had completely recovered. He had
taken Dr. William's Pink Pills at the out-
set without hope of benefit, and, merely to
please hie wife; now he finds them a life
boat and an art of safety.
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People.
are manataotnred by the Dr Williams'
Medicine Co., of Brooklyn, Ont., Schenec-
tady, N. Y., a firm of unquestioned relia-
bility. Pink Pills are not looked, upon as a
intent medioine, but rather a prescription.
An analysis of their properties shows that
they contain, in a condensed form, all the
elements necessary to give nese} life and
richness to the blood and restore shattered
nerves. They are en unfailing specific for
snob diseases as locomotor ataxia; partial
paralysis, St. Vitus Danoe, sciatica; neural-
gia, rheumatism, nervous headache, the

nervous prostration; all diseases depending
upon vital humors in the blood, such as
scrofula, chronic erysipelas, etc. As a
remedy for building anew the blood, en-
abling the system to snocoessfully resist
disease, Dr. Williams' Pink Pills stands
far in advance of any other remedy known
to medical science. Pink Pills are a sped-,

should be avoided. The public are also
cautioned against other so-called blood
builders and nerve tonics, put tip in sinlalltr
form intended to deceive. They aro all
imitations whose 'makers hope to reap a
pecuniary advantage from the wonderful
reputation achieved by Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills. Ask your dealer for Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills for Pale People, and refuse all
imitations and substitutes.

agent for a few years, it has cured more cases
of Rheumatism than all other moans com-
bined. Some of our leading physicians, recog-
nizing this fact, are seedling themselves of this
most potent of nature's forces.
