CONOERT. — We understand that
Miss MoHardy and her pupils will
shortly give a concert here; it is expect-,
ed that Mrs McKelcan, of Toronto, or
some other singer of prominence, will,
;also take part.
PUNISHABLE.—On Sunday last some
boys broke the seal on a bonded car at'
the station, This is an offence that
can be severely punished, and boys
should keep themselves clear of the
liability thereof.
OPEN LODGE.—An open meeting of
the Temperance Lodge will be held in
the Lodge rooms this (Friday) evening.
An excellent program has been pro-
vided, embracing also an address by
Mr J. Houston, M.A. The meeting is
free to all who wish to attend.

OLOSE FIouRINe—.The Public School
Board asked for tenders for the erec-
tion of closets, and opened the same on
Monday evening. It shows how close-
ly work is crit when it is stated that
between the highest and lowest out of
the four tenders received, there was
only a difference of $7, and there was
only a difference of $1 each between
three. The contract was awarded to
Mr S. S. Cooper at $258. The new
closets will be built on the best sani-
tary principles, and while the outlay
looks large, it is better that a good and
proper expenditure be made, and the
work well done, than that the health
of four hundred pupils should he en-
dangered. What are a few dollars
compared with life. The Board, we
believe, is acting wisely and in the
very best interests of the ratepayers.
DuATH's DOINGS.—Mr Will Moore
Inohirns the loss of a two year old
daughter. Mrs Geo. Bowers,wbo went
to Helena, Montana, a year ago for the
benefit of her health, died there on
Monday, and the remains will be in-
terred here; she leaves a family of eight
children. Mrs Spooner, (wife of Mr
Chas. Spooner) who has been ailing for
a couple of weeks, died on Tuesday
night; she leaves three sons and three
daughters, two of the latter being Mrs
C. McGregor, of Hullett, and Mrs Hall,
of town. The wife of Mr Wm. Hig-
gins, for many years a resident of Clin-
ton, but latterly residi.ig at Crediton,
died on Tuesday; she was the mother
of a large family, her eldest daughter,
Mrs Job Cooper, being the only one
now residing here. Mrs Knott, wife of
Mr Henry Knott, died yesterday
morning; she leaves no family.

CHANCERY SITTirrus. — The Spring
Chancery Sittings were to have com-
menced at Goderich, on Monday, but
on Sunday night Chief Justice Robert-
son sent a telegram to the Sheriff,
postponing the court until Wednes-
day. One Monday Mr • Aylesworth,
Q. C., and the court reporter, arrived
from• -Toronto; expecting• thatthe•court
would ##piroceed as usual, but they learn-
ed tp'the contrary, and just stepped
4'om' one train to another and went
back. Mayor Barker and Postmaster
Board, of 'Kincardine, were in town on
Monday; they were on their way to
Goderich as witnesses in a case that
was to come up for trial, but they got
word here that the case bad been ad-
journed, and they went back home at
ten o'clock.
CRIMINAL STATISTICS.—During the
•year 1891, 63 males and 9 females were
committed to Goderich jail; in 1892, 46

the third time; 25 were married; 9 could
neitherread or write; 12 were temper-
ate; and 39 intemperate. The daily
cost of the rations for the prisoners
was 9,jc., at which figure they would
not "fare sumptuously every day."
The total jail expenditure for the year
was $2,287.74; the average cost per
.prisonerfor food, - fuel, etc. being
at London, on the 20th of June. Mrs

last week. Mrs Walter Coats left on
Wednesday, on a visit to her sister in
Brigden. Miss Lyons, of Dundas, is
visiting her sister, Mrs H. Foster. It
was with some little surprise . that the
friends of Mr Norman E. Wilmot, read
of his marriage at Toronto on Wed-

Huron for the World's Fair, was a cow
shipped from Londesboro on Tuesday,
and owned by Mr W. Grainger, of
Hullett. Mrs John Wise, of Tucker -
smith, is stopping in town undergoing
medical treatment. Mr R. Smith, who
has been a resident of town for several
