The report of the Minister of Educa- tion is out, and from it there is seen to be an increase in the school population of the last decade of over 20 per cent., the real figures being in 1881 484,224, and in 1891 615,781. The average at- tendance is 52er cent. of the register, an increase of1 per cent. on the last return. There is a decided increase in the number of teachers who attend the Normal School, and it is noticeable al- so that the percentage of female over male teachers is on the increase, 68 per cent. of the whole being women. At the same time there is an increase in the average salaries paid. In this con- nection it is to be noted also that the increases in salaries have taken place mostly in the cities where competition is supposed to be fiercest, the rural dis- tricts showing no improvement. The cost of education per pupil has increas- ed during the past decade over one- qquarter ot the whole present cost, the ,figures being: -In 1881, $5.92; in 189L $8.34. A large difference is shown in the average cost in cities as compared with towns and r ural districts, but this increase is apparent rather than real, when we take into account the fact that the school sites are counted as factors in the cost, these sites being of course an asset. The figures as to the attendance. at the Separate Schools show an increase in about the same proportion as the Public Schools. FOR YOUR BENEFIT WE TELL OUR STORY FROM HAMILTOM TO PARIS. At Whitby on Friday Henry Ling - ford and Bernard Baker were tried for shooting William Palmer. It will be remembered that all last fall Baker had been losing poultry and produce night after night. Finally he decided to stay up and if possible catch the thief. He was accompanied by Ling - ford, who was working for him at the time. On the second night of watch- ing, a noise was heard in the barn yard and Baker went out with gun in hand. He saw a flickering light in the hen roost, which soon went out when he challenged the party. A shoot was fired by Baker. Palmer ran out an another shot was fired after hii1, He then turned upon his pursuers and Lingford fired a bullet th rough his heart, killing him instantly. At the court Lingford was tried first, and the jury liberated him under the theory that he was justified in shooting Pal- mer when the latter turned upon him. Baker was released immediately by order of the judge. h3n Baby was sick, we gave her Castor!". see she was a gelid, she cried for Castorla. • ::0n dhe became Miss, she clung to Castorla. Those pvho think that the gener- al exterior effect is squat and unimpres- sive are not the superiors in knowledge of those who hold that the southern elevation is stately and beautiful. There can be no difference of opinion as to the arrangement of the building internally. The demand of conven- ience, comfort and health have been fully met by the designer. The legis- lative chamber is possibly one of the most perfect assembly rooms in the world. The beauty of its proportions is unspoiled by a blunder, but the har- mony of the decorative effect is marred in sport where the colors cease to bloom in richness and blaze out in gaudy, if not tawdry, splendor. Altogether the building is a credit to the government that planned the work, to Hon. C. F. Fraser who supervised it, and to the province, the greatness and the hopes of which are not unworthily typified by the new abode of its legislature." DO YOU WANT A First-class Step or LongeLadder? PA'rrli RSON, Mgr. for Canada. Electricity, as applied by the Owen Electric Belt, is now recognized as the greatest boon offered to suffering humanity. It 1s fast taking the place of drugs in all nervous and rheumatic troubles, end will effect cures in seemingly hopeless oases whore every other known means has failed. It is nature's remedy, and by its steady, soothing /current that is readlly felt, POSITIVELY CURES Rheumatism, Sexual Weakness, Solation, Female Complaints General Debility, Imppotencyy, Lumbago, ,Kidney Diseases, Nervous Diseases. Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Laine Back, Varicocele, Urinary Diseases. RHEUMATISM It is a well known fact that medical science has utterly failed to afford relief in rheumatic 'oases. We venture the assertion that although Electricity has only been In use as It remedial agent for a fow years, It has cured more cases of Rheumatism than tall other menus com- bined, Somo of our leading physicians, recog- nizing this fact, aro availing themselves of this most potent of nature's forces. TO RESTORE MANHOOD Thousands of people suffer from a variety of nervous diseases, such as Seminal Weakness, Impotency, Lost Manhood, Weak Back, oto., that the old modes of treatment fail to euro. Thorn is a loss of nerve force or power that cannot be restored by medical treatment, and any doctor who would try to accomplish this by any kind of drugs is practising a dangerous form of charlatanism. Properly treated THESE DISEASES CAN BE CURED Elootricity, as applied by thho Owen Electric Belt and Suspensory, will most assuredly do so. It is the only known remedial agent that will supply what is lacking, namely, nerve force or power, impart tone and vigor to the organs and arouse to healthy action the whole nervous system. BEWARE OF IMITATIONS And the worthless, cheap, so-called Electric Bolts advertised by some concerns and peddled through tlio country. They aro electric in name only, worthless as a curative power, and dear at any price. We Challenge the World to show an Elootrie Belt whore the current is undor con- trol of the patient as completely as this. Our Trade Mark is the portrait of Dr. Owen embossed in gold upon every Belt and appliance manufactured by us. Send for Catalogue --Mailed (Sealed) Free.
