"When I firet•knew the General I was a '
80bool boy, and of course felt.the school
boy's awe of a great man. Privileged to
know him for year sin the intimacy of hie
own home, 1 never entirely overcame, that
feeling. What wee heroic, in him grow and
did not diminish . The wore I saw of him,
the more I felt that he was good ae well ae
great. Its faoe used to be called ephiax-
like, That was ecarcely true, for although
its, expression was always calm, strong, im-
perturable,-it was alao one of groat gentle.
nese. He 'surely was a gentleman. Perhaps
his hands aided to keep his face Benne,
for we mint all bave Home safety valve.
4imost the only external indication of
annoyance I ever noticed in him was a nor -
yowl opening and shutting of his fingers, an
index of emotion often observed by other of
his intimate friends. A notable illustration -
of this trait was told me by a gentleman
who once accompanied him to a very large
public dinner given in his honor. At its
close one of the guests ventured a on the
telling of gtoriea which are not told pueris
virginibusque. The general's hands began
to Ovork ; he quietly excused himself, and
his companion, who knew the significance
of the gesture, followed him. As . they
smoked their cigars on the streets of the
foreign city in which this occurred, the
general said : 'I hope I have not taken you
from the table, but I have never permitted
such conversation in my presence, and I
never intend to.' This was not an affecta-
tion. His mind, clear and wholesome, left
its imprint in his face. Grossness or scan-
dal gave him genuine discomfort. Ho loved
to think well of his kind. This trait show-
ed in his face, gave it benignity, and was, I
fancy, the secret of hie hold in the affections
of men. We chanced to be alone in his
room one night after the last cruel betrayal
of his confidence, he walking to and fro by
tho aid of hie crutch. Suddenly ho stopped
and, as if following aloud the train of his
silent thought he acid : '1 have made it a
rule of my life to believe in a man long
after others have given him up. I do not
Bee how I can do so again,' There was no
bitterness in' his voice, not even an elevation
of tone. It was simply an exclamation
of an honest heart sorely wounded in
its belief. As. I recall his face, that
which I remember is not so much line and
contour as the expression of strength, of
great patience, of calmness, and of gentle-
ness ; and the incidents which illustrate
pure qualities also come back freshly to my
memory. He bad, too, a merry face, at
times a merry eye. Ho was full of sly
humor. The twinkling of his eye and his
quiet laugh promptly rewarded an amusing
story. In his own home bis face was always
kind and responsive. There he was Apt the
silent man the world thought it kne*, but
a fluent and well-informed talker on all that
was ofinterest to him. Undoubtedly, how-
ever, he had the gift of silence, and when
he saw fit to exercise it his face became a
mask, conversation ceased to be among the
possibilities, and a chat with a graven
image would have been a relief at such a
time. He became then, and designedly, a
silence compeller. When there was nothing
to be said he said nothing."—Harper's
Magazine.

A Little Green Grave.
Sometimes, when the sun climbs hie farthest height,
The sweet summer sunshine becomes but a blight,
For a little green grave slowly swims in my sight.
And I sob in the dust ofuncomfortednight,
Sometimes, when the ripple of,laughter rune through
All the world, it seems to ,no base and untrue,
For a littlereen grave slowly swims in my view,
And the saddest of tear drops my eyelids bedew.
And sometimes, when joy seems to girdle the ways,
bly heart huge a grief no nepenthe allays ;
For a little green grave slowly swims in my gaze,
And nothing can gladden the desolate days.

the action of AYER'S Sarsaparilla,
when taken for diseases originating in
impure blood ; but, while this assertion
is- true of AXER'S Sarsaparilla, as
thousands can attest, it cannot be truth-
fully applied to other preparations, which
unprincipled dealers w0l1 recommend,
and try to impose upon you, as " just as
good as Ayer's." Take Ayer's Sarsa-
parilla and Ayer's only, if you need a
blood -purifier and would be benefited
permanently. This medicine, for nearly
fifty years, has enjoyed a reputation,
and made a record for cures, that has
never been equalled by other prepara-
tions. AYER'S Sarsaparilla eradicates
the taint of hereditary scrofula and
other blood diseases from the system,
and it has, deservedly, the confidem:.e
of the people.

" I cannot forbear to 'e ress my joy
at the relief I have obtai d from t?:e
use of AYER'S Sarsaparil , I was
afflicted with kidney troubles or about
six months, suffering greatly w h pains
in the small of my back. In add ion to
this, my body was covered with imply
eruptions. The remedies prescribed
failed to help me. I then began to take
AYER'S Sarsaparilla, and, in a short
time, the pains ceased and the pimples
disappeared. I advise every young
man or woman, in case of sickness
resulting from impure blood, no matter
how long standing the case may be, to
take AYER'S Sarsaparilla."—H. L. Jar-

• RHEUMATISM
it is a well known fact, that medical science
has utterly failed to afford relief in rheumatic
ruses. We venture the assertion that although
Electricity has only been in use as a remedial
agent for a few years, It has cured more eases
of Rheumatism than fill other means nom-
bined. Some of our leading physicians, renow-
nizing this fact, aro availing themselves of this
most potent of nature's forces.
