LI otieW Rule.
The spectacle presented to the World
on Monday last, ;in the British House
of Commons, li;t,. ,never been equalled
in the world's history. A veteran
statesman for over sixty years a mem-
berof that House, four times Premier
Of the first empire in the world, and
over four score yells of age, introduc-
ed'for` the second time a measure giv-
ing to- Ireland the boon of self govern-
ment. -.The aged Preanier's speech was
over three hours in length, and it is
'said was equal in eloquence and argu-
went :to any former effort. It is just
seven years Since.Mr.Gladstone intro-
duced his'flrst$ome Rule bill; when he
' was'defeated by 33 of an adverse vote.
In the:meantime the majority in Eng-
land has been changed from 211 to less
•'"than 70, and the kingdom's adverse
}`coats of 33 to;'40 in • favor. It may not
e that }Ione Rule is to carry now,
ut, no doubt, upon the principles laid
own by Mr. Gladstone;-. Ireland will'
;.tri the•;near future, receivejustice. A11
he leading newspapers of the Empire,
; a ' of 'the world, remark upon the
:Wonderful character of Mr Gladstone's
achievement.
The new measure is distinguished by
'four characteristics.
Eirst,; Imperial unity is observed and
he equality of all is observed
Secondly, the ecluality of .all the
kingdoms rs borne in,nli'
