With the single exception of Ellen Fawcett, now Lady Martin, the name of no other woman reader, has appeared on the prospectus of that institution. For nearly 50 years this society had as its president, Thomas Carlyle, and is now under the care and guidance of William Ewart Gladstone. Beth gentlemen are Favorably known iu Clinton and other parte of Huron SLIPPEIti TINnS —The gide and boys, and men and women, for that matter, are having their innings now. There is nothing so productive of dig• nified beariug as having a good hold of the sidewalks and stone crosaings in these slippery times. BE CARE6`UL—A number of youths were skating on the.ice on Fait's pond Saturday morning: The depth of the water is said to be four feet in some places. Many a boy has Ioet bis life in more shallow water and we would advise the boys to be careful. ON THE SLIDE.-Jacksou Bros. erected a toboggan slide in one of their windows on Friday. Many people have been attracted and viewed it. It is about as drawing as the firm's well worded .advertisements, which„ means the slide is worth viewing, TRE BEST WAY.—No funeral notices should'be printed without two different times being 'mentioned, and (to give illustration) should read: Ser- vice at the house at 2 p. rn. ; funeral at 2.30. This would be an advantage in all weathers, but especially now that the winter is setting in. MAtsIE DERRICK —This is a well written book of choice fiction issued by John Lovell & Son, Montreal. The author is Katherine S. Macquoid, also author of "Cosette," "Mies Eyon of Eyon Court," etc. The work is well worth persual and is issued in paper cover at a very low price. READ IT AGAIN.—At the recent St. Andrew's dinner Bro. Colquhoun was one of those who ably responded to "The Land of the living." But our report, as printed, did not do justice to his remarks. It should have read "Sootland had a Monteith,a Cumming, nnd"Uthers; lmut-contmnua. record of these mon with such noble heroes as Bruce, Burns, Wallace," etc. A word or two sometimes makes a great difference, the sense or nonsense of a few lines depends almost entirely on the reporter and proof reader. DEATHS DOINGS'.—Katie," the in- telligent, lively and teach loved and only daughter 01 Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Watts, -died on the 9th inst. She suff- red several days . from inflammatory roup, so much so that a consultation of medical men was held and a silver tube insetted to allow the brave little child to breathe. All that-s•kil•f••••aeel kind and affectionate parents could do Lwas without avail, except to pro• long life a few days. Those who realize the loss through death of a bright little child will deeply sym- pathize with Mr. and Mrs. watts. The interment took place to Clinton, cemetery on Monday. IT WAS A SUCCESS. —After reading the excellent report. of the St. And rew'e' dinner in last week's NEWS RE- CORD, the Goderich Star says :—"IT WAS A SUCCESS. --We mean the St. Andrew's day supper at Clinton under the auspices of Murray Camp, Sons of Scotland. The attendance was large, and Bre. Kennedy set a table that has not been surpassed on any similar oc- casion in the history of the town. Chief Fortune presided, and the music, speech and song were all that heart could wish for. , The brethren of Mar - ray Comp are equal to all the require- ments of these social gatherings -- there's no hidden meaning in these words, friends—and they loyally hon- ored the day dear to old Scotia's sons." CHEESE FACTORtEs.—The splendid returns from cheese factories for the past season has given on impetus to that industry all over Canada. The industry seems to be well rooted in all Localities except in the immediate vicinity of Clinton. There is room for a number of cheese factories in this section. 'Every school section should have a cheese factory. Not one fac- tory in Ontario properly man- aged and supported but has paid hand- some returns. Five thousaud dollars were paid to Victoria county farmers for the few 'heels factories now in operation foe October's cheese alone. Peterboro county has more factories and sold $25,000 worth of October cheese. If we had a few of these fac- tories instituted in this section they would bring in thousands of dollars in ready cash every mouth to the farmers. In some localiteles farmers run the factories to make cheese in the rammer months and butter the re- mainder of the year. Why not make a more, farmer friends, in this direc- tion. •would til all, of our oustclnl.ex' .to know that, We have roved front Muir cel ,stand :and are established' xn the'agcjjay•. .r ,Stood of \ XMAS 300DS ° Is Nearly Complete Our Xmas Cards, Booklets,' Calencltl,vs &.c., aro My' i nc and Wire is a great range in prices.
