She was 46years oltl; had had twelve
children, but one was dead, Con-
fronted by the letter found by Mrs.
Qiiickehe denied having written it
or knowing anything of it. Ilir.
Fullerton urged her to sit'down and
copy it off, but site refused, and Mr.
Justice Street said Ile didn't know
bow he could make her do it.
She positively refused, saying, ".1
do not think it is necessary." She
also said she could riot write
further than to sign her name.
At the assizes Thursday tuolning
the sensational case of Quick v.
Church was resumed. The mother
of Mr. Quick was put in the box by
the defence and testified to the man-
ner in which Mr. and Mrs. Quick
lived prior to the husband's dis-
appearance. Mr. McCarthy then
addressed the jury, and ridiculed the
idea of Mrs. Church being guilty of
enticing anyone's husband away.
She wan 46 years of age, the moth,
er of 12 children, possibly a grand-
mother, and had passel) that tiwe in
life when she would be likely to
take any such course. On the con-
trary the husband of . Mre. Quick
was hale, hearty, a successful bus•
inese man, and, if he was not living
happily with Mrs, Quick and had
determined upon striking out anew,
hef would hardly have looked up an
elderly woman, the mother of a
large family, but would rather have
"glade off" with some buxom lat•sie,
plenty of whom he might have
found willing to go.
Mr. Fullerton replied at consider
e length, and uthmercifully ar
geed the conduct of Mrs. Church
her endeavr, as he alleged, to
ssess • herself of a fine looking
n, at the expense of poor Mrs.
ick, who had lost her support, and

If.
Mr. Justice Street charged the
jury at length, and held the balance
ry fairly between .the parties in
viewingand commenting upon the
idence, but rather leaned in
vor of the improbability of the
ggestion that Mrs. Church could
e guilty of all that was suggested
hen it was shown that in Green
ay, where elle was carrying on
nsiness, she had residing with her
large family of grown-up young
en and women,against whom noth:
ng whatever was said.
Mrs. Quick got a verdict for
$4,500: $2500 for seduction of
affection and $2000 for mainten-
ance. It is likely the case will be
appealed to the higher court.
poened as a witness In the case.
At the i3rantford Assizes Wed-
nesday and Thursday of last week, a
trial of a highly sensational charac-
ter was in progress and one which
has caused the court room to be
densely crowded with all classes and
conditions of citizens. When the
case of Quick v. Church was called
Mr. Fullerton, Q.C., acting for
.plaintiff, stated to the jury that the
case was of a novel character and
the only one of the kind ever tried
in Canada, or indeed in England.
Mrs. Sarah Jane Quick, a resident
of Woodstock, and wife of Joseph
Quick, formerly foreman -of Darn's
organ and piano factory, sues Mrs,
Agnes Church, widow of the late
Alanson Church, of Blandford,
lumberman and retired farmer, for
$5,000 damages, alleging that elle
alienated from her the affection of a
hitherto devoted litieband. While
the case was being opened to the
jury Mrs.''Quick and Mrs. Church
with difficulty made their way
through the crowd and todk scats
on opposite sides of a narrow table,
and, with compressed lips, glared at
each other in a way that only real
ly angry' women can. Mrs. Quick
is of slight build and rather delicate.
Mrs. Church is of reheat frame and
determined disposition. Mrs. Quick
entered the box and related her
marriage experience, which she said
had been pleasant, barring an in-
terval of two years, when her lies
band becomingcharmed with a Mrs.
Skinner, of Grand Rapids, a deed of
separation had been arranged, hut
in latter years he had returned and
been forgiven. But their happy
home was a second time tlhe, scene of
discord, all because, a8 811 Haid,
"that woman" (pointing to Mrs.
Church) had by her persuasive and
winning ways stolen her bread-
winner froth her, and that lie was
now in Green Bay, Wisconsin, act-
ing as manager of nn hotel, of which
Mrs. Church is the proprietor. Once
the witness spoke of her aka "lady,"
but immediately corrected herself,
and pointed to her as "that woman."
She related having quietly- searched
her husband's pockets while he was
soundly sleeping, and was rewarded
for her trouble by finding a letter as

This letter plaintiff says defendant

another letter defendant longed for
the time when they would meet
"where the berry bushes grow.'
Years flew by. Mrs. Church be-
came a widow. Discord and family
jars continued in the Quick family,
and finitlly, on a pleasant autumn
day, Mrs. Quick discovered that the
bird had flown. Her husband left
her all his property, but very little
was saved after paying his debts.
Determined to see for herself, she
visited" Mre. Chnrcll's hotel at
Green Bay. There she found her
husband sitting as manager and bar
tender. He was surprised. Mrs.
Church heard of lir arrival, and in
a few minutes the parlor of the St.
James- was the location of a "scene."
Getting very little comfort there,ehe
returned to Woodstock, and is now
endeavoring to replace the )husband
with some of Mrs. Church's cash, of
which, it is said, the latter possesses
plenty.
Mr. McCarthy, Q. C., acting for
the defence, subjected Mrs Quick
to e. most eearching examination,
Inst she exhibited a mind of her own
and did not get very much mixed.
She said :-"I may have been
peevish and fretful, bat I wasn't so
bad that Joe should have gone and
left me." For the defence Mr. Mc-
Carthy placed Mrs. Church in the
box, and she denied the whole story
and stated that Quick had only
