The Huron News-Recora 1.60 a Year -41.25 in Advance a Wednesday, Nov 2nd, 189. WHAT THE YANKEES THINK. Some of the papers of this coun- try, would fain make our people believe that the Yankees are just dying to annex Canada to the Unit ed States. Every indication goes to show that the very reverse ie the case. Wo believe that the bulk of the American people give the sub- ject no consideration at all and that most of those who have thought about it are opposed to the proposi• tion, feeling that the United States is already large enough. The Buffalo Express, reforring to the dismissal of Elgin Myers' and A. E. McDonald for advocating annexa- tion, no doubt voices the sentiment of the Amlerican people when it says: NO CAPITAL REQUIRED "Few public officials in Canada, holding office 'for life or during good behavior,' think of taking any active part in politics. There are those who love to hear the sound of their own voices and delight in an affray of words. To that class, doubtless, belong Myers and Mc Donald. But the eteady•going, sensible officials, keep entirely out of politics, some of them goigg so unnecessarily far as to refrain from voting. These annoxationiste are not nearly so dangerous as the Canadian politicians seem to think. They may agitate and about until the millenium and the result will be just as far off, unless this country takes a hand in ; and that is un- likely. Such men anticipate and revel in such narks of attention: To the people of the United States the matter is a vary small one, and the agitators smallerstill." $TDIBIrI.1' •BCIIx!QI.''ll' I'.,; okoroor t' nlpbell, of Qhfo, WRtt rttln'Of' Zile t peekera Bial a oleo Dettloarattedewonetratloo oo $tatetl Island, . 1r,,,001$100dt+y aveni.tlg, The ex.Qpvirrnor was very .entertatf • ing in ,tit{• manner its well es in. atruotive in the factspresented to hie audie>Ioe, The following is hip definition of reciprocity t"I emotions give a definition of reciprocity which is a bit humorous, but which GM the cape exactly. It Is like this: Maude end Claude are a couple of young people who are Bitting up a late in the evening with the light turned down juste little, you know, ea it won't fracture their eyes. (Much laughter.) Some of those old fellows on the Stand here know how it used to be. (Laugh. ter.) And this is about. the iiime 'Maude and Claude discovered This Republican reciprocity, There has been a great deal in the newspaper, about reciprocity, and Maude is l.ke most of the women. She has not bothered much about politics. She had to get Several new dresses this fall and has been pretty buoy generally, and she sap, "Claude, I have been reading about reciprocity. Now what is recipro- city V Why, he says, "don't yon know 7 Now, if I kiee you and then you kiss me back, that's reciprocity." (Laughter.) To which she retorted that ebe always suppee ed it was something nice. (Much laughter.) I am in favor of that kind of reciprocity -(laughter) -not only between the boys and girls, but' between us and tho countries that' we trade with. (Applause.) If we are going to kiss them, we want to be kiesed back a little in return, and when we pick out the girls that we are going to kiss, in- stead of picking out the black ones of South America I vy;ould pick out the whiteonesof Canada and Europe. (Cheers and laughter.) It's a mat- ter of taste -(roars of laughter.) - and I believe the Democratswould just as soon that it would be white. (Laughter and cheers.) PREACHER AND PRISONER. AN UNINTENDED RESULT. Our good friends in the United States are beginning to ask them - solves what is the value of retalia- tion which fails to retaliate. They are as much amazed as the ghoat who tried to frighten the wooden Highlander in front of the tobacco shop, and who made a oonspicuqus failure of it. The Highlander ought to have been scared out of his seven senses, and yet he stood there with the calm serenity of utter fear- lessness on hie baswood brow offer ing the spook a pinch of snuff. Callousness of that order was enough to upset the convictions of the best -regulated ghost in the world. Uncle Sam is - in much the same state of feeling about Canada. lie passed the . McKinley tariff, which was to reduce the Dominion to a condition of utter nothingness, and lo ! the exports of the country have not fallen off. On the con- trary, they have increased from $89,000,000 in 1889 to $97,000,000 in 1890, to $98,000,000 in 1891 and to $114,000,000 in 1892. They made frantic efforts to reegver the line, and finally succeeded. They brought up a thousand pound sword fish, but the body of their mate had disappeared forever, DR. WOOD'S Loss than a fortnight ago a travel ling evangelist calling himself Rev. George W. Roberts, belonging pro- fessedly to the Presbyterian church, arrived in Toronto. He evidently satisfied some of the P"resbyterian authorities here that his claim to ministerial distinction was sincere and profound, and for the past week he conducted evangelistic services at the Presbyterian church on the corner of Sumach and St. David streets. He is a man of rather good appearance, fluent in hie address, and betrayed apparent earuestuess and zeal in the cause of sinning humanity. He is probably 45 years of age. As a means of draw- ing crowds to his services he de- scribed himself as the "cowboy evangelist," A serious report concerning the Rev. Mr. Roberta reached the Staff - Inspector on Monday last, and in consequence of the rumour the preacher was arrested by Detective Davie one morning. The boy who made the original accusation is the 15 -year-old son of a King street grocer. He is em• ployed by a cigar and tobacco merchant on King street east. On the evening of Tuesday of last week Rev. Mr. Roberts was in his•em- ployer's store, and when he started for home the preacher accompanied him as far as the door of hie father's place. Finding all the family out the preacher invited the boy to ac company him to hie rooms on the north side of Adelaide street a few doors west of York. As they entered the room the preacher lock- ed the door behind them. The lad then claims that the Rev. Mr. Roberts was guilty of moat dis- graceful conduct. Then came retaliation. That was to do the work effectively, even ,if the other attempt had fail'ed. Well, retaliation has been carrying on active operatione for some weeks, and Canadians are absolutely un- able to findout what it is. But etsange to say, the first outcry comes from the other side of the line. The Port Huton Times reports that the steamer United Empire of the Beatty line, arrived at Port Huron Michigan, the other day, intending to unload at that port. But her cwptaiti could get no assurance that the Sault tolls would be remitted if he did so : and tis tubae tolls would be refunded if he unloaded in Canada, he took his cargo across to Sarnia and unloaded there, "so that," says the Times sadly, "a port of the United States lost the busi• news, and a force of forty men, em- ployed.at the Grand Trunk elevator here, were temporarily thrown out of employment." President Harrison undoubtedly intended to strike a heavy blow at Canada. It has failed of its effect. But Canada will now be justified in demanding the total abolition of the Washington treaty Norway Pine Syrup. Upon being arraigned in the Police Court this morning he plead• ed for time to consider his position and defence, but afterwards chang- ed his mind and elected to be tried by a jury. "Can't I speak to your Honour -t" caked the prisoner. "Indeed you cannot," fervently replied the Court, "you must come from a country where prisoners are allowed to interview the Judge."
