WHAT THE YANKEES THINK.
Some of the papers of this coun-
try, would fain make our people
believe that the Yankees are just
dying to annex Canada to the Unit
ed States. Every indication goes
to show that the very reverse ie the
case. Wo believe that the bulk of
the American people give the sub-
ject no consideration at all and that
most of those who have thought
about it are opposed to the proposi•
tion, feeling that the United States
is already large enough. The
Buffalo Express, reforring to the
dismissal of Elgin Myers' and A. E.
McDonald for advocating annexa-
tion, no doubt voices the sentiment
of the Amlerican people when it
says:
NO CAPITAL REQUIRED
"Few public officials in Canada,
holding office 'for life or during
good behavior,' think of taking any
active part in politics. There are
those who love to hear the sound of
their own voices and delight in an
affray of words. To that class,
doubtless, belong Myers and Mc
Donald. But the eteady•going,
sensible officials, keep entirely out
of politics, some of them goigg so
unnecessarily far as to refrain from
voting. These annoxationiste are
not nearly so dangerous as the
Canadian politicians seem to think.
They may agitate and about until
the millenium and the result will
be just as far off, unless this country
takes a hand in ; and that is un-
likely. Such men anticipate and
revel in such narks of attention:
To the people of the United States
the matter is a vary small one, and
the agitators smallerstill."

DR. WOOD'S
Loss than a fortnight ago a travel
ling evangelist calling himself Rev.
George W. Roberts, belonging pro-
fessedly to the Presbyterian church,
arrived in Toronto. He evidently
satisfied some of the P"resbyterian
authorities here that his claim to
ministerial distinction was sincere
and profound, and for the past week
he conducted evangelistic services at
the Presbyterian church on the
corner of Sumach and St. David
streets. He is a man of rather good
appearance, fluent in hie address,
and betrayed apparent earuestuess
and zeal in the cause of sinning
humanity. He is probably 45
years of age. As a means of draw-
ing crowds to his services he de-
scribed himself as the "cowboy
evangelist,"
A serious report concerning the
Rev. Mr. Roberta reached the Staff -
Inspector on Monday last, and in
consequence of the rumour the
preacher was arrested by Detective
Davie one morning.
The boy who made the original
accusation is the 15 -year-old son of
a King street grocer. He is em•
ployed by a cigar and tobacco
merchant on King street east. On
the evening of Tuesday of last week
Rev. Mr. Roberts was in his•em-
ployer's store, and when he started
for home the preacher accompanied
him as far as the door of hie father's
place. Finding all the family out
the preacher invited the boy to ac
company him to hie rooms on the
north side of Adelaide street a few
doors west of York. As they
entered the room the preacher lock-
ed the door behind them. The lad
then claims that the Rev. Mr.
Roberts was guilty of moat dis-
graceful conduct.
Then came retaliation. That
was to do the work effectively, even
,if the other attempt had fail'ed.
Well, retaliation has been carrying
on active operatione for some weeks,
and Canadians are absolutely un-
able to findout what it is. But
etsange to say, the first outcry comes
from the other side of the line.
The Port Huton Times reports that
the steamer United Empire of the
Beatty line, arrived at Port Huron
Michigan, the other day, intending
to unload at that port. But her
cwptaiti could get no assurance that
the Sault tolls would be remitted if
he did so : and tis tubae tolls would
be refunded if he unloaded in
Canada, he took his cargo across to
Sarnia and unloaded there, "so
that," says the Times sadly, "a port
of the United States lost the busi•
news, and a force of forty men, em-
ployed.at the Grand Trunk elevator
here, were temporarily thrown out
of employment."
President Harrison undoubtedly
intended to strike a heavy blow at
Canada. It has failed of its effect.
But Canada will now be justified in
demanding the total abolition of the
Washington treaty

To Inspector Stark, Rev. Roberts
stated that his . home was at
Norwalk, Connecticut, end althoueh
a regularly ordained minister of the
Presbyterian church, had not filleA
any pastorate charge. Latterly he
had been working in his evangeliatic
capacity throughout the State of
New York, and came to Toronto a
week ago last Friday.
. Upon being arraigned in the
Police Court this morning he plead•
ed for time to consider his position
and defence, but afterwards chang-
ed his mind and elected to be tried
by a jury.
"Can't I speak to your Honour -t"
caked the prisoner.
"Indeed you cannot," fervently
replied the Court, "you must come
from a country where prisoners are
allowed to interview the Judge."
The only witness examined was
the boy who lodged the complaint
against Mr. Roberts, and upon his
e a'lement the prisoner was com-
mited for trial, bail being fixed at
two sureties in $400 each.
