DEATH.
Suddenly released from a condi-
Lion of dumbness which she had
lived in since her birth fourteen
years years • ago, Little Gertie
Henshaw, of Stanton, Mich., has
becotlie afflicted with a mania for
talking, which all the efforts of
physicians have as yet failed to
titan. About two weeks ago the
girl first began to use her speech,
the change coming from no apparent
reason: A week ago, with speech
fully restored, she commenced to
talk incessantly, and for six days
now she has kept it up, with not
an hour for rest or Bleep. Physi-
cians who were called in have been
unable to quiet the girl, even with
the use of strong opiates. Her talk
is of a perfect rational charecter, ern
bracing a complete account of her
experience while dumb and her pre
sent inlpresions. It is feared she
will talk herself to death.
MR. McNE1LL, M. P., AT
SHEFFIELD.
Mr. McNeil, M. P. for North
Brute, addressed the Sheffield
Chamber of Commerce yesterday on
behalf of the Anglo -Canadian pre-
ferential trade. He warned Eng-
lishmen that Canadian loyalty is be-
ing subjected to a terrible strain,
aurl urged that the offer of the
Dominion Parliament for preferen•
tial trade, on which Canada is un-
ited, should be accepted. The
Sheffield Independent today con•
tains a long article dealing with the
address delivered by Mr. McNeil, a
member of the Canadian House of
Com:none, and a well-known Im-
perial Federatidtiist, before the
Sheffield Chamber of Commerce.
The Independent remarks that Mr.
McNeill is a good epeaker,__but_ has
a poor opinion of the intelligence of
Englishmen if he thinks they pro-
pose to quarrel with their largestcus-
tomers for the sake of a small raise
in prices for themselves. Canada
proposes to smother us in corn, but
if Canada reduces the hostile traiff
now existing against Britain, its,
action will be a very practical evid-
en:o ofgood-will. There is nothing in
Mr. McNeill's address calculated to
beguile any one not already an ins
footed protectionist. The Sheffield
Telegraph (Conservative) says Mr.
McNeill's speech was no gossamery
fabric. The factseiwere marshalled
with the skill of an able general.
It was the sort of speech which will
set people thinking. Conservatives
ahould be especially grateful for
Mr. McNeill's dtterances.

ANTI CATIIOLiC AGITATION IN DETROIT
RESULTS IN STRONG RESO-
LUTIONS.
The climax of months of anti•
Catholic agitation in Detroit came
last week at the Auditorium, when,
after a rabid attack on the Church
of Rome and its parochial school
system by ex Priest Chiniquy, the
great audience of 5,000 people
passed resolutions fiercely condemn
ing the church of Rome for attemp-
ting to interfere with and curtail
the efficiency of the public school
system and strongly indorsing the
the position of the local school
board in• d iding to exclude as
teachers al those educated in paro-
chial schools ofeectarian colleges.
For months past efforts have
been made to create an anti-Catho-
lic sentiment there through various
orgarizations, and the movement
has become so vigorous and success-
ful that the last local election was
carried by the efforts of these bodies
and all candidates for local'offices
this year have been nominated
through them.
EATEN ALIVE BY DOGS.
TWO SAVAGE CURS AT SYCAMORE
TEAR A' BOY TO PIECES.
—Fred Ulrich of Sycamore, I11.,
while returning one morning at 2
o'clock from a Republican rally at
DeKalb, had occasion, after leaving
the train, to pass the home of Mrs.
H. H. Mitchell, in the western part
of the city. Mrs. Mitchell and her
neighbor, William Walrod, both
owned ugly doge and the boy cross,
ed to the far aide of the street to
pace the dogs. Mrs. Mitchell's dog,
however, ran across and attacked
him, and the Walrod dog broke his
chain and joined the attack. The
boy fought desperately for his life.
His only weapon was a small pocket-
knife, and the small cuts he was
enabled to give the dogs only served
to increase their fury. Sereamiug
for aid, the little fellow was borne
to the ground, and before aid reach-
ed him the dogs were literally eat
ing him alive. The flesh was all
eaten from one leg until the bone
was ais clean of flesh as if it were par-
boiled ; one arm was etripped of
flesh and other portions of the body
were horribly mangled. The boy
was still alive, and physicians aml.u.
tated ono leg and have done every
thing to alleviate his sufferings, but
be cannot live. He regained con-
sciousness and told of his desperate
fight with the brutes, -
