HE SAYS HE WAS THE BLiND MAN IN THE. BERLIN, ONT., RUBBERY. Geo Bergen, the notorious burg- lar, who was seutenced by Judge Lacouree to ton years in Kingston penitentiary for being au accessory to- the. attempted, robbery and mur- der of Rev. Mr. Erb, of Berlin, Ont., about seven weeks ago, has made a confession that he is guilty of the crime, thereby supposing that he would have a few years of his sentence knocked off. In his confession lie gives complete de tails of the doiuge of himself and of his three companions. He nays :- "We met in Detroit and decided to make a tour through Canada, visit- ing the principal town and cities while plying our 'profession.' We repaired at once to Toronto, where we began operations by breaking into a large jewellry store, getting over $500 worth of watches. We were luckier in this piece of work than in some succeeding ones, and escaped with the booty without de• taction. The stolen watches were sent to a sister in Chicago, where they were quickly disposed of. Nothing of any account was accom- plished after that by us for about two months, till one day we arriv- ed in Woodstock, and, being short of money, we broke into a butcher shop while all the workmen were away to dinner and procured ,$160 in cold cash. The next week was principally taken up with roving arouud the small towns and boozing to large extent. When we arrived in Galt we had a high old time there and spoilt $40 one night, in drinking and making merry goner - ally. Wo came to Berlin next day, and, upon making enquiries about the different people in town, decid- ed to burglarize the residence of the Rev. Mr. Erb, who, we supposed,. had a large amount of money in the house. We hung around until about 2 o'clock in the morning, when my two companions told me to stand guard while they forced an entrance. The next thing I knew slid lady (Mrs. Erb) came running downstairs and opened the front door to scream for help. I shoved my revolver in her face, and told her if she screamed I'd kill her. I then putthed her back into the hall and closed the door. The next minute I heard a windciw upstairs at the side of the house .open, 'and Mrs. Erb immediately began to call for help.. Hearing that the neigh- bors wore aroused, and seeing lights in all the neighboring houses, I gave our peculiar alarm and started to run up King street. I think the other two went up tho side street by the house (Cameron street) I then went to Preston, and aftewards to Galt where I was arrested for pointing a revolver at Kress, of Preston. When I and the other two started out we determined to make a living, even if we had to kill to do so, and slaw -determined to die fighting rather than be cap- tured." this last assertion Bergen fully proved, for, on being arrested at Galt be fought desperately, and tried to shoot the constable. At the trial ho offered to prove an alibi in the charge of burglary at Rev. Mr. Erb's by bringing wit• neases from a thieves' den in De- trfot. , This was not allowed, and he was accordingly sentenced. He also gave his opinion ae to where his two companions in crime could be found, which is only known to the detectives. The people of Can- ada may congratulate themselves that such a desperate criminal as Bergen is Safe within the strong walls at Kingston. --The Protestant Protective Asso- ciation hae already assumed a strength in Western Ontario that would surprise those who are not behind the scenes. It is to its influence that the baby city of Windsor ex- perienced a revolution in its muni- cipal government recently, and, in London many hundreds are en- rolled pledged to Canada and Pro- testantism before party. Saturday morning he went down to the kit- chen where Miss Henderson was at welt, and accueed her of being too attractive to a man named Webb She told hien that if he did not atop such„conduct he would have to leave the house. This seemed to enrage Sullivan and ne drew a revolver from his pocket and fired at her, The first shot entered the body al the pit of the stomach and took a course through her body to4the lett side under the ribs, The second shot passed through the muscles of the left arm, between the elbow and shoulder, and the third imbedded itself in the left wrist, shattering the bones. A fourth shot grazed the knuckles of her right hand and embedded iteelf in a cupboard. The woman ran to Mies Jacob Bird• salt's, a neighbor, cryiug "He's shot me. I'm murdered." Sullivan then went to his room. He put the revolver in his trunk and went to bed, where he:wassubsequently found by the officers. D:s. TWO PAINTERS ENGAGED iN A COM• BAT WHILE SWINGING 200 FEET ABOFE THE ROARING NIA- GARA. Two painters engaged in mortal combat on a slender scaffold over the Niagara, suspended from the canti- lever bridge, last evening. One of them is dying, and his assailant has fled. A gang has been engaged by the Grand Trunk to repaint the cables, guys and etays of the bridge and had lot themselves down by the usual banging platform. They were 200 feet above the water's level in the gorge. One of the two who quarrelled was a French-Cana- dian from Montreal named Joseph Grieves, the other also a Canadian) from the vicinity of St. Catharines named Wm. Gamel. They had some words which irttracted the at- tention of near by workmen, who were horrified to see Gamel GRAB UP A HATCHET. tend attack Groover. Greaves grap pled with his assailant, the scaffold swung to and fro, and Gamel, who was much heavierand stronger than his companion, was fast pressing hits to the edge, when Greaves clutched for a rope to save himself from being pitched headlong into the abyss. At the unguarded in- stant Gamel struck Grieves three times with the hatchet, aiming three times for tho head, Two blows were dodged and fell on Grieves' neck, but the third split his skull behind the left ear. He dropped like a log off the scaffold, falling about twenty feet, where was caught by intersecting guy ropes, and lay out of reach of his antagonist. With superhuman strength tho fallen painter clutched at the wire cables and began to climb hand over hand Co the bridge floor, tho blood pouring from the cut. He had no sooner thrown himself on the bridge than Gamel POUNCED UPON IiIM AGAIN, but by this time other workmen had reached the spot and prevented downright murder. "If I catch you again, I'll hill you," hissed Gamel at his victim as he hurled his hatchet into the river and fled. Greaves was picked up and carried to the Canadian 'shore, where his wounds were dressed. He had re- ceived a severe blow, severing an artery, and the hemorrhage was so copious that thesurgeons pronounc- ed his hold upon life extremely precarious. Gomel was last seen boarding a Michigan Central train. Ile pro- bably reached the Staten and likely will stop on some boat at Buffalo. He is an old sailor, weighs 225 pounds, and was dressed in a suit of paint -daubed brown clothes, with slouch hat. Canadian' officers have notified Buffalo to look out for him. -As yet no one has been appoint- ed jailer at Walkerton, but the office is being ably filled by Mies Roether.
