ABOUT ECONOMY.
A man may go from Clinton to
Toronto without riding in the cars.
It will take him a long time to walk,
but he saves his oar faro.
The thing looks economical, but is
really extravagance.
A man can often do without a
dgctor when he is sick, and do with-
out quack nostrums particularly, if
he will only economize by having a
little Fine Whiskey, Brandy or Wine
at the proper time.
And and it is foolish economy to
be without that which is likely to be
prescribed for you.
We have what you want in Ales,
Porter, Whiskies, Brandies, Wines,
etc., etc., in wood and bottle.
We keep in stock the very best
and sell at the lowest living profit
"'he correct and safest economy is to
always buy from us.

STOOK SALE—Mr. Wm. Grainger

heifers and three bulls of the same
breed for sale.
THE ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
in connection with the Mechanics'
Institute, have entered into negrotia-
tiont to secure the •services of the
talented lecturer, Miss Jessie T.
O'Donnell, who lately met with
such a warm reception at Thousand
Island Park. Mies O'Donnell's
testi, moniala are very high and the
cultured town of Clinton should
give her a hearty welcome. The
lady has been secured fur Monday,
24th inst.
THE GUNPOWDER PLOT.—The
Lady True Blues and Orepgemen
of Belgrave will have a novel gath-
ering on Nov. 5th. They pur
pose having a box social. The
ladies will prepare boxes in which
will be all the neceesaries to ap•
pease the appetites of two—a lady
and gentleman. The name of each
gentleman's partner for the evening
will be found in the box. A good
programme of music, singing, etc.,
will be provided and a crowded
house is naturally anticipated.

TWISTING OUT.—Our totem seems
bouud to twist out of a corner, even
if untruthful statements will assist.
Now he says a committee was "ap-
pointed to see what a suitahle hall
and lot would cost 1" The
matter, we repeat, was not discussed
by the Orangemen, and how could
it be before tho committee made a
report. Committees have power to
recommend what they may think
best. The original statement as
well as the last made by the Era is
untrue. •The only way to convince
some people is to "reach for them
with a club."
A BUSY PLACE.—One of the busi •
places in town these times is at
G. T. R. freight shed. Pro-
ly at rio time previously has
re been so much activity' there.
e amount of freight daily leaving
nton must be attributed to some
cause. The broad, enlightened
nadian policy of a truo Canadian
eminent and a BI itisR consum
market has something at least
do with it. Special freight
ne are being run. As high as
;;a hie point in a day
for vario1 scat+nations, consisting
of grain, fruit, manufactures, etc.

this is a verification of what we said
at that time.

FALL SHOWS ARE OVER.—Thio
week THE NEWS -RECORD winds up
the fall show campaign. We have
published the names of prize win-
ners and reports of Goderich, Clin-
ton, Belgrave, Blyth and Bayfield
shows. The reunions and healthy
competitions at all these places must
result in good and especially stimu-
late our farmer friends to improve
in many cases their breeding of
stock. The directors and officers
of the various agricultural societies
should profit by this years experi•
once, although the shows were good,
and even make each individual one
a greater success in 1893.

A JUDGE'S OPINION.—The Mit
shell Recorder last week said of the
Huron Central Fair:—"The best all
round -chow that we have attended
this season was at Clinton het week.
The fruit exhibit was very fine,
though not quite up to that of God-
erich. The roots and vegetable die -
play, on the contrary, was much
superior to that at Goderioh, and
the cookery department was an at
traction of itself. The judges of
that department struck us as being
either hungry, or largely impressed
with the idea that the judging of
the pudding was in the eating of it.
Of some of the choicest pies the pub-
lic could but view the fragments and
be content with that. The Clinton
ladies are splendid cooks." The
editor of the Recorder is a married
man and was one of the judges et
the Huron Central.

THE EAST HURON Gazette says :—
Mr. Albert Cooper, of the Clinton

HE NEVER FAILS.—Ten dollars
of Hon. J. C. Patterson's money
was distributed in prizes, at the
recent East Wawanosh fall fair, al-
though he did not receive credit for
that amount in the printed list.
OUTSIDE OPINION OF MUSCULAR
CHRiSTiANTT.—The Mitchell Advo-
cate pertinently remarks:—The re-
ligious editor of the Clinton New
Era recommends "that to make
some men behave themselves is to
reach for them with a club." It is
not often that we find a local
preacher a supporter of mob law.
W. H. PERRIN'S grain elevator is

doubt ere long the bum of farmers'
wagons will be heard there.

A TORONTO TRUSTEE TUSSLE.—
Last Thursday a school trustee elec-
tion was held in the Sixth Ward,
Toronto. There were five candi-
dates, among them E. Floody, form•
erly of Clinton, who was awarded
third place iu the tussle.
WEARING HONORS.—W. H. Mc-
Cracken, of Brussels, the man who
wears a silk tile and long whiskers
and scoops in all the prizes he can
yet, is surely a record breaker.
This year he was on deck at Wing -
ham, Seaforth, Belgrave, Brnssela
and Blyth. The result is 133 prize
tickets tacked to hia long Iist of
honors. Mr. McCracken is a hand-
eomo looking gentleman.
