Probably the least understood
and most misrepresented Society in
Ca -nada is the Orange Society. • 'rho,
following from Major Sam Hughes,
editor of the Lindsay Warder, him-
self a prominent Orangeman, is pre-
cisely on the lines often laid down
in THE NEWS -RECORD:
A worthy reform friend recently
asked us how it could be possible
for orangenten to support a roman
citholic for any ince: We hope
our answer satisfied him:
To our inquiring friend we read
the sixth paragraph of the "General
Declaration" of the Loyal Orange
Association of Canada which says :
"Disclaiming an intolerant spirit
the Association demands as an in.
dispensable qualification, without
which the greatest and the wealth-
iest may seek admission in vain,
that the candidate shall be deem-
ed incapable of persecuting or in-
juring anyone on account of his re-
ligious opinione; the duty of every
Orangernau being to aid and de-
fend all loyal subjecte of every re-
ligious persuasion in the enjoyment
of their constitutional riatits."
Paragraph nine declares that :-
"The Association is constituted
upon the broadest principles of
national freedom," and "it disdains
the badge of faction."
Tho last paragraph invites :-"A
coalition of parties, and calls upon
the sons of Britain to lay aside
political feuds, and, like their illus-
trious ancestors, who signed and
sealed the great Covenant of Free
dom, to sacrifice every private con-
sideration, and establish a centraliza-
tion of power to conserve the great
blessings and privileges which we
enjoy under British connection."
Every living Orangeman sub -
scribe's to that declaration ; and no
where from first stFP to highest
round of the ladder does ho direct-
ly or indirectly pledge himself
against a roman catholic citizen.
He simply upholds the constitution
of the British Empire.
What Orangemen are bound to
do is this however. They must op-
pose legislation, or laws, or ideas,
whether emanating frotn Orange-
men, other ' protestants . or roman
catholics, which are contrary to the
true spirit of responsible govern
meat and the individuality of man
A true Orougeman is bound by his
declaration to oppose any and every
union of church and state. He
would also be bound to resiet to the
utmost all legislation recognizing
or advancing in the State the power
of the roman catholic church.
