The notorious radical M. P., Labouchere, is bound to get even with Gladstone for not being taken ink the. cabinet. It will be remem- bered that Gladstone's home rule policy, while granting an independ- ent parliamont to Ireland, allows the Irish to have lnembers in the Im• penal parliament. Witii some reason Labouchere exclaims : "It would be a monstrous crime to allow the Irish to be masters of their own local affairs and to re- main masters of ours. It would be a fatal fault, for we aro convinced that the English constituencies would never stand it." It is quite apparent that so long as other countries will not adopt free trade, and the tendency is all the other way, the cotntnercial situa- tion in Eugland will be pre• carioua. England must go in for preferential trade with the colonies as a means of self-defence. The The Englisk inspector of bank- ruptcy reports that nearly all the recent failures there are attributable to the. McKinley tariff. The veteran Hnngarial5 patriot Kossuth in writing from his exile recently mournfully remarked with reference to the lost independence of his country : "That which force takes away time or chance or for tune may restore; but rights which a people voluntarily surrender are lost, forever," Tho Canadian seal lawa s who would voluntarily sur• rend r the rights and liberties of the five millions of Canadians to the .tender mercies of sixty-five millions- of Yankees Blight profit- ably ponder over Kossuth's words did they have a spark of patriotism about thein. But it is too much to expect that there is either conscience or a sense of shame left to those who have sunk 90 low in the scale of sentient humanity as to either barter for office, or in the bitterness of political disappointment volun- tarily surrender, their birthright of self-government under the freest form of government in.the world, to a mob' ruled nation whose better element is et the beck and nod of anarchists, dynamiters and the drugs of the lowest classes of unedu- cated imported ruffians. COW AND BEAR. The Kootenai Star vouches for the truth of this, to say the least, remarkable atory L t Sunday evening Mr. 1+. Fraser went to fetch home the cows before going to church. He took his gun with him, as he knew there were several bears in the vicinity. It was fortu• nate he did so, as on the way back he almost stepped on a half.grown cub. This one he killed, and direct- ly afterward be saw another under a log. IIe fired at it, and the cub began to scream. This brought one of the old bears on the scene, and Fred, thinking "discretion the better part of valor," hastily lit out for home, only to find himself faee to face with another huge bear, evid., ently the head of the family. One of the the cows -not a nondescript -had turned back on hearing the firing, and catching sight of the old Ile bear, she lowered her horns and went for him like a gash, hitting him Square in the ribs with a thud that might have been heard half a mile away, and rolling hien ovens like a log. Seeing .' her master's danger -11m then flew at Mrs. Bruin and served her in a like manner. After this she turned her attention to the bear she had first assailed, but he was "gong where the wood. bine twineth." He had no relish for cow's horns. The other bear had also vanished, and the victor- ious twain reached home without further incident. -Mrs. Jewett, of Fredericton, N B., 46 years old, rose one morning in her usual health and sat down to baeakfast. Immediately she fell to the floor and was dead in a few minutes. .. r.4. ;Indeed is he who's`bI pd 11 poor, who busiest his appetite and his flesh, wind skeane to b0 in *rapid de• cline; but SCOTTS IJLSIO Of Fare Norwegian Cod. A short time ago a man calling himself Dr, Henry C. Beale, his wife, known as Nellie Haven, and I3attie E. Graham were arrested in San Francisco, ebarg3d with the murder, by malpradtice, of Mary Carroll, the young daughter of a Petaluma county farmer. Beale forfeited $10,000 bail' and disap- peared, but the women are still in prison. According to the etory of a Mrs. Montrose; Boats has committed a largo number of murdere in that city. The woman says that Beale used her house for ten months as a private hospital. During that period he had about 50 patients and there were no fewer then 40 chil- dren born alive in the house, not one of them being permitted to live. Beale either chloroformed or drown ed his helpless victims, after which he whighted their bodies and threw them into the bay or cremated them. DEAD AS A DOOR NAIL. Titis is well known to be one of the oldest similes in the language. 11 occurs not only in Shakespeare ("2 Henry IV." V. iii., 125), but in Langland's "Piers the Ploughman" (about 1362-1399), who says that "faith withoute fet (feat)" is "ded as a dore-nayle (C. ii. 184). Prof. Skeet, in a note on this passage in his monumental edition of the poem (Vol. II., p. 29), observes that an earlier use still is to be found in "William of Palerne (about) 1350." The passage referred to ie : I am ded'as a (lore -nail. SOME MFN SHOULD NEVER MARRY. There is something peculiarly sor- rowful to me in the way in which the children of some households slip quietly out of sight when they hear their father's footsteps outside the door. The children must "settle down" then, for father "can't bear noise,' and disorder "worries" him, Oh, it does, does it? It makes ,him ner- vous to hear the baby cry or the children laugh, does it 1 Ele likes to have the house perfectly still does he 1 Well, then, what under the sun did he ever marry for 1 Why didn't he remain in that state of single blessedness peculiarly ap- propriate to men whom children "worry." There are so rnany nice, quiet, delightful boarding houses in which the laugh of -a child is never heard because children are "not allowed" there, -There was a very funny motion before Master-at-Chamcers Win - cheater, Toronto. It was on behalf of the plaintiff in the breach• of promise action brought by Mr. G. W. Masealles against Miss Mary Park. Mr. Massailes is forty eight years 'bfage and Miss Park is thirty. In his statement of claim ho asked fifty cents for every letter he ever wrote, expenses:for a trip to Florida, remuneration for time he had been humbuggiug, and also for provisions that spoiled at hie "home while he was paying an extended call to his sweetheart. Further, he wants $500 for his disappointment. The Master couldn't see the force of the motion and dismissed it with costs'. -Awriter in Blaekwood's Maga- zine, contemplating the risk Great Britain is running in depending upon foreign nations to such an ex. tent as she does for her food supply, says : "Our position as tributary to the United States involves a risk that we have neither any right to run nor any object (beyond mom- entary cheapness) in running. We can avoid it by stimulating the food growth of our colonies, espec- ially in mettle, even if they should be somewhat dearer than the pro- ducts of America." This is the idea Sir Charles Tupper has been preaching and it seems to be making progress in England. -Mrs. Awty, of Mitchell, has sold the Goforth farm, on the 1411x concession of Logan, to Henry San • dere for $4,000.
