A POINT WORTH NOTING. Iu one respect at least McKinley was a benefit to us. He forced Canadians to look to the natural mar- ket of Gaeat Britain for some lines in which they had contented to jog along with the American trade. Every bushel of grain, every pound of hotter. every barrel of fruit forced out of the States by high tariff develops our trade with Bri- tain. If it had not been for the abrogation of the old reciprocity taeaty, and the subsequent tariffs since raised, the Americans would have continued to be our middle men. They would have retained the cost of carriage and a large slice of the ultimate profit. - The deliber- ately drovo us into the position of active competitors with themselves in the very market to which the surplus of both- countries gone. Canadians have accepted the situa- tion and are improving upon it. They have beaten their neighbors in cheese. Beside the Canadian pro- duct, the name of the Yankee is now Dennis. Thanks to the Do- minion Government and Prof. Robertson we will soon beat them in butter. Canadian apples, per e0, as the lawyers say, bring a bigger price than the United States pro. duct. Our bacon is better. No wheat in existence can equal Man!. tuba No. 1 bard. The United States made a mistake when they drove us into independent active competition with them, instead of keeping us, as heretofore, persion• era upon the County of their bord- er trade. Now they must reckon with ue,and it is surely not idle boasting to assert that as now in cheese, so for the future in other things they will be the under dog in the tight. The man who declares to day that ten years hence will see Britain away and beyond the best market for alt our farm produce has to stand the same sceptical criti- ism as he who would have asserted at Confederation that soon all our cheese and cattle would go to Bri- tain and none to the States. But time is on his side. HOW SHE GAVE HERSELF • AWAY. • "Weill you marry me, dear ?" asked Mr. Bleecker of Miss Emer- son. •'No, sir," replied Miss Emerson, who (Ed not even say it was sud- don, although it was, for Mr. Bleecker had been presented to her only a 'week before. She thought his presumption merited a decided rebuff. "Say 'no' again, dear," said Mr Bleecker, • "No, sir !" elle repeated, with even more positiveness in her voice than the first time. "Thanks! Oh, I'm so happy 1" And Mr, Bleecker threw his arms around the astonished maiden's nook and kissed her persistently and vigorously. She struggled t) free herself, and then demanded : "What does that mean, sir V "I was merely enjoying the privileges of an accepted lover," he replied, unabashed. "Accepted lover!" (This in aston- ishment). "Yes. We are engaged." "Will you kindly 'explain whe- ther or 'not you h ave lost your mind?" "Lost nothing, my love. You have been to school, haven't your, "Certainly." "You studied grammar ?" "Of course." "You are familiar with the ordin- ary rules of grammar, then ?" '71'I trust so, But what has this to do with it? If you are a ditaotor looking for a echoed teacher, I should advise you to look elsewhere, Mr. Bleaker." "That is not my business at pre sent. COWHIDED IN HIS PULPIT. A NEW ORLEANS CLERGYMAN BORE A WHIPPING MEEKLY. The Rev. Dr. A. E. Bridger, pastor. of the C®ngregationalchurch et Jennings, Louisianli, was chas- tised in oburohSuoday forenoon by exasperated parishioners. The pastor had b)come unpopular on account of his plain epeeoh on varioueogcasions, and matters reach- ed a crisis when he made the rounds of the town last week, going from store to store seeming to take pains to say that the women of the place were unchaste an that the whole town was a cesspool of iniquity. A more than usually large num- ber of peop'e attended the church this forenoon, At the close of the services D, E. M Burkera leading citizen, arose in his pew and asked the women to retire, but requested the men to remain. Burke asked the minister if he had made the statements about the women of the place accredit d to him and received the reply that he had. The minister added that he would stand by the allegations, as they were true in every parti cular. - No sooner had he uttered the re- mark than Burke drew a cowhide aid proceeded to dust the min- ister'e •garments to hie heart's cou tent. Dr. Bridger did not flinch under the punishment. THE OMNIPRESENCE OF LOVERS. . Have you ever been in the house where a couple are courting? It is most trying. You think you. will go and sit in the drawing - room, and you march off there. As you open the door you hear a noise as if some one had suddenly recollected something, and when you get in Emily is over by the window fullof interestin the opposite side of the road, and John Edward is at the other end of the room with his whole soul held in thrall by photo- graphs of other people's relatives. 'Oh !' you say, pausing at the door. I' didn't known anybody was here.' 'Oh, didn't you ? says Emily, coldly, in a tone which implies that she does not believe you. You hang about for a bit, says Jerome K. Jerome in `Three Men in a boat,' then you remark. Why don't you light the gas ? John Edward says he hadn't not- iced it, and Emily says papa does not like the gas lighted in the after noon. You tell them one or two items of news, and give them your opin- ion on the Irish question, but this does not appear to interest them. All they remark is 'Oh 1 is hi,' 'Did he?' 'Yes' and 'You don't say so !. And after ten min- utes of such conversation you edge up to,.the door and slip out, and are surprised to find that the door immediately closes behing you and shuts itself without your having touched it. Half an hour later you think you will try a pipe in, the conservatory. The only chair in the place ie occup- ied by Emily, and John Edward. if the language of clothes can be relied upon he has evidently been sitting upon the Boor. They do not speak, but they give you a look that says all that can be said iu a civilived comunity and you backout promptly and shut the door behind you. You are afraid to poke your nose into any room in the house now, so after walking up and down the stairs for a while, you go and sit in your bedroom. This becomes uninteresting, however, after a time, and so you put on your hat and stroll out into the garden. You walk down the path, and as you pass the summer house you glance in, and there are those two young idiot-, huddled up in one corner of it, and they see you, and are evid- ently under the idea that, for some wicked purpose of your own, you are following them about. Why don't they have a special room for this sort of thing and make people stay in it I you mutter and rush back to the hall, get your umbrella and go out. -The time for trial of the peti- tion against the return of Mr. Ben- nett as member for East Simcoe has been extended until Dec, 15. -The Pope has created Vicar General Rooney of Toronto a Roman prelate of the papal house- hold.
