He in- troduced -himself to Mies Lucile Prescott, a middle-aged spinster, as a professional man, who had a friend anxious to marry a woman of her year% and fortune. He aaid that he bad married off several•• of his friends to women of her social standing, and that the marriages had proved uniformly happy. He gained great influence over Miss Prescott. and induced her to sell moat of her real estate at a sacrifice that she might provide Thompson's friend, supposed to be named Roberts, with money enough to settle some pressing debts before the marriage. She told her ato:y at the police station as soon as she recovered eucilfrently, and upu:i this infatuation being tele- graphed to Manchester Thompson war arrested, Yesterday he waa arraigned for fraud and was re- manded. Manchester detectives think that he is responsible for the disappearance of several other women from Manchester within the last two years. EVIDENTLY MAD. AN ENOLICH CLERGYMEN KILLS HIMSELF UNDER DISTRESSING CIRCUMSTA\OES. The Rev, Joseph Weedon, vicar of Moreton parish in Lancashire, committed suicide at Rhyl, a water• iug place in Wales, one morning Isit week. Weedon was eons ed to be it man of excptional iety 1(nd was happily melded. A fort' ieht ago, when he started on his v -cation, he behaved e' .ngely toward his wife and finally told her that he would have to leave her at home as he did not have money enough to pay the board of two persona. .Mrs. Weedon remained at home. Mr. Woedon 'met a pretty young servant! from Moreton at a station a few miles off, and proceeded with her to Rhyl, where he into dueed her at the hotel its his wife. The couple lived so extravagantly that when the bill was presented on Thusday night Woedon was unable to pay it, The landlori threatened proceedings, but Weedon held ;silo off"wtth promisee to raise the money. On the next morning \Veedon bought a revolver, went to the hotel and shot himself dead. The coroner's jury to day gave a verdict of suicide in a lit of insani- ty. HOW PHALLING ESCAPED. The following explanation of the way Forger Mailing escaped from the Stratford goal comes from the Guelph Herald and is given for what it is worth : Edward Phalling, alias C. C. Dale, dealer in horses and mules. who escaped from Stratford jail on Tuesday night last week, has proven himself an ingenious lock- smith. He bus a sharp eye, and it is supposed that by daily examina- tion of the cell key he fixed it so ac- curately in his mind that he was able to reproduce it. The material lie used was a wooden rod from the cell chair, and his only tool was a piece of zinc sharpened on a brick. The cell door was of stone, and the it y hole was row the outside. The key was a shaft about a foot long to reach through the atone. M r. Conway left eight years ago to seek his for- tune in Californian. A despatch front Harrisville, Mich., say :--"Upon e.xamina'iou Alfred Henshaw, one of the most wealthy citize,ts here broke down and confessed toe brutal murder come ,nitted by him at Strathroy, Ont., years ago. Renshaw was a lumber man in financial difficulty. Hie partner, Richard Drake, found fault with his conduct, and one night, in a quarrel, Henshaw stabbed trim to death in the office, locked the body in the safe and fled. Ten days later the body was discovered, but no clue could be found to the murderer. Large rewards we •e offered, but noticing came of them, Six months ago a son of Drake offered two local detectives $1,000 if they should captured his father's Murderer: The Hien accepted, and aftered to long chase through New York, Mexico, San Francisco, Chic ago and Michigan, they finally located Henshaw here. Mr. Sowerby said promptly and firmly ; "Not a word," and he walked out. This all transpired in about one minute.
