Weduesday,;Sept 114th 11891,
THE FRUIT CROP,
P01.80118 concerned in the fruit
tilde frequently manifest a lively
iutereet in, and make frequent en-
quiry of the fruit crop a•
broad, evidently with the belief
that the price here is largely in-
fluenced by the supply of dila pro
duot in European countries. 'fide
view of the 'natter is not a little
er.roueous. It is the fruit crop on
this side of the Atlantic --Canada
and the United Stated -that in the
past at least has been the principal
factor in effecting the range of prices
that have prevailed in the English
market, and not the continental
crop. In no year siuoe the export
trade has assumed large proportions
has there been a season when a
moderate American crop has not
found in the Liverpool, London
and Glasgow trade good prices for
all fruit that was scut over from
this aide. On the other hand, in
no year when this country was
flooded with an all around crop 'has
the English demand been able to
handle all this country had to offer,
and as a result certain to follow
such a condition, prices have ruled
low.
On this point a prominent Eng
lien dealer says :-
"Although shipments from Amer-
ica muet always in some degree be
influenced by the einem or failure
of the crop there, iu reality the ex
tent of shipmentq mainly rests on
the success of failure of the Amer-
ican crop. The English require
'vents have grown to such dimens-
ions as to makolit oertain that, how
ever successful the European crop
may be, the English must still look
for large additional supplies from
abroad,"
So that oar growers need not in-
terest themselves so much as to the
crop abroad as to what is there
in Canada and the United States.
With regard to the crop in Ont-
ario the following estimate from the
Ontario Bureau of Industries of the
quantity of apples upon the trees in
the different districts of the Pro-
vince is based upon the seplies of
the producers from all partsof On-
tario. It applies to fall and winter
appies only, and does not include
the product ,.of town and..v.illage.

Moat of our informants state that
on the whole the apple crop. of Ont.,
is less than one half a full crop and
that owing to spotting the above fig-
ures in reality represent too high
an estimate of yield.
The Lake Erie ; counties' 3 iold
will be fat- below the average, the
greatest deficiency being in Essex ;
Kent is considerably better, Elgin
and Norfolk fair and Welland very
poor. In the Lake Huron counties
Huron stands first with a large crop,
then Bruce with a good crop, Lamb -
ton practically none. Grey pro-
mises a very a very good crop, in
size.
The Maine Farmer, in speaking
of the apple crop in the New Eng-
land and and Eastern States, soya
three or four counties in western
New York in a fruitful can furnish
all the apples the English market
will take in one season at a good
round price. Hence with a heavy
crop throughout New England, and
the same in western New York, the
crop must be fold low. At the
present date the reports are to the
effect, that while there is not a great
crop anywhere in New England,
those western Now York counties
are still worse off, and will have
but very few apples. Whether final
results will corroborate present re•
porta remains to be known. Certain
it is not a great crop either there
or in New England.
With these reports our apples
may be expected tocommand a high
price in the British markets this
year.
THINK FOR YOURSELF
Don't you think a medicine which
cures others will cure you? Don't you
think you need Burdock Blood Bitters

A LINGUISrX0 MENAGERIE,
OE:IGIN AND a:GNIFIOANOE OF QUAINT
AND QUEER SAYINGS.
Let us take a turn with the an:
imalo and insects of metaphor.
The Scotch have a saying . "You
have a bee in your bonnet." The
moaning of it that the head had anew
idea or fancy that is for the time
paramount. "Your head is full of
b 'es," is an old•ime phrase mean-
ing that dreamy thew lea have taken
possession of the brain. The con-
nection between bees and the soul
was once generally maintained ;
hence Mahomet admits bees to
Parodies. The moon was called a
"bee" by the priestesses of Ceres,
and the word lunatic, or moon•
struck, still moans one with "bees
in his bead."
"The wolf at the door" is a com-
mon expression in all countries,
and we say of a ravenous eater, "he
has a wolf in bis stomach." It ion•
plies hunger, starvation. It is said
that there are people who use the
term literally to frighten their youg
children into habits of industry and
economy, so that the frightful wolf
of hunger may never appear at their
doore.
"A frog in the throat" is a com•
mon expression referring to a husky
speaker.
"I smell a rat" has long been a
popular saying when come mystery
has been discovered or a hidden
clew found. It was an Irish bar
risttr who got off the mixed met-
aphor ;"I smell a rat, I see hits
waving in the air, butiliif we are
careful we shall nip him in the
bud."
WANTED TO RECONSIDER.
The noticeable interval of erst-
while while sloth between his trou-
sers and his veat betokened a con-
siderable degree of indifference to
the oonventionalitiea of the world.
His face indicated a prolonged
estrangement from ablutionary
agencies.
"Madam," he affably remarked to
the stout woman with a soiled apron
who hail come to the door in
response to his knock. "you doubt-
less .recognize me.'
The stout woman nodded grim-
ly.
r I wltlil to -announce as a prelimi•
nary postulate-"
He assumed an easy air and lean-
ed lightly against the door frame.
"The scriptural declaration that
the wise man c'hangoth his mind
bat the fool is perverse in bis jud-
gment."
Ho cleared his throat.
"I daresay madam-"
The woman with the soiled apron
suffered her lower jaw to drop
slightly.
"You will have no difficulty in
remembering that you offered me this
morning a piece of rye bread and a
cold franhfurther."
The woman closed her mouth de-
cisively, but made no sign either of
affirmation or denial.
"Madam, that piece of rye bread
and cold frankfurtber I refused
with scorn."
He gazed reflectively on the
floor.
"I am free to confess, madam,
that in the excess of my disappoint-
ment I had it in my heart to utter
contumelious sentiments relative to
thelfood you gave me, but-"
He coughed faintly.
Madam, I wish to act the part of
wisdom."
He paused.
"Well 1"
The stout woman's inflections
were incisively interrogatory.
"Madam" -
He bowed
"I wish to reconsider my refusal
and-"
"Sick 'em, Towsel•,"
The sun set on a scene of peace,
but the man with the interval of
erstwhile white cloth between his
trousers and his vest was far away,
wearing a painted expression
on his face, as if some-
thing had gone amiss with him.
