NEWS NOTES.
—Strict Rules for the barring out
of all competitore who lose their
temper and maliciously attempt to
physically injure their opponents
should be adopted by all our la-
crosse, cricket and other amateur
sport associations. All who take
part in these games are supposed to
be gentlemen and to "aet as such,"
and such displays of temper are
brutality as are sometimes exhibit-
ed, however exciting the game may
be, are extremely painful and dis-
agreeable to spectators. Besides,
strong men cannot angrily hit op-
ponents on the back of the neck or
the side of the head with sticks
without actually endangering life,
as they would know if they had
even the slightest knowledge of
physiology.
—Severe weather in the south of
Ireland has caused great damage to

EDITORIAL NOTE.
In a Welsh colliery 107 lives
were lost last week, and it is feared
this is not all.

in Manitoba is already cut. Grain
dealers say 'there will be as much
No. 1 hard wheat there this year as
there was in the combined last three
seasons. This is cheering news.
a
The English Radical, M. P.,
Henry Labouchore, has written a
letter complimenting Mr. Glad-
stone upon his chivalry in accept -
ng the leeponsibility for La•
bouchere's exclusion- from the
Cabinet. It is a pity Mr. Glad-
stone could not return the compli-
ment. For it is not nice to think
that a member of the British Parlia-
ment 18 so mean as to attack a wo-
man, the Queen, who is precluded
by her position From defending
herself. To attack the motives of
a Judge in referring to his' decis-
ions is considered contemptible be•
cause he cannot enter into any dis-
cussion. It is immeasurably con
temptible for Labouchere to attack
the Queen and credit her with mo
Oyes, which she cannot possibly en
tertain, and for doing what she did
not do.
The 'Grit idea of Opposition in
politics may be gleaned from the
statement of one of their leading
lights theo ther day that "tire poli
tical arena is constantly developing
men of rad,'cal tendencies, and these,
if left out of office, may cons:ilu:e a
disturbing element in the nation:"
Hoity, toity ! The Grits may con-
stitute a disturbing element if they
are left out of office. Well, they
are bettor out at all hazards. A
party whose chief object is to form
a disturbing element when out, of
office, would be very likely to be a
disturbing element when in office
where they would have the power
to do are immense amount of harm;
while in Opposition though they
may have the will they have not
the power of doing much mischief.
This rule or ruin confession of a
Grit mouthpiece is the most frank
confession we have had for a long
time, and it is as true as it is
frank.
In the formation of parties there
seems to be end. A new party
has come to the surface in New
Brunswick where one of J. W. Mc-
Dermott in his appeal to the elec-
tors asks for "that true support that
one Christian should give another."
If he is defeated it will look as
though the Chtistians are in a min
ority in Kant county. The EotWire
suggests tha'jSir Oliver}Mowat keep
track of the number of votes cast
for Mr. McDermott and tote them
as so many evidences of Christian-
ity to be embodied in the next
edition of his work with that title.
Tho Americans do not find the
65,000,000 market big enough to
secure sale for their flour at paying -
prices and aro offering straight rol-
ler flour for,$3,90 a barrel delivered
in St. Johns, Newfoundland. If
the Yankees can bring flour from
Missouri and .Ohio and sell it in
Newfoundland at the figure given
and pay duty out of that, the
American market would not be
much of a God -send for our Cana-
dian farmers, Free trade would be
rather a eheol sort of a breeze for
Canadian farmers.

PRIEST AND CONII'ESSIONAL.
A very remarkable case has leen
entered in the superior court,
Montreal, Icy Messrs. Prefontaiue.&
St. Jean, advocates, and one that
will no doubt create a stir iu legal
and ecolesiaatical circles. The
action, which is for the sum of
$5,000, is taken against the statist -
ant priest of St. Bridget's pariah,
the Rev. Ludgar Desjardine.
Fabien I'ichette, a blacksmith, liv•
ing at 136 Beaudry street, is the
plaintiff, who married in the church
above tuentioned on Sept. 1, 1887,
and is the father of six children, all
of whom are 1 now living. TLe
plaintiff alleges that his wife
went to the defeudant'n confessional
during the present month, and after
confession in due form, the clergy-
man in question, without cause or
reason, and violating the sacred
office he was called uron to fulfil,
asked his penitent all sorts of idle
and melees questions ; and at the
same date the confessor told his
penitent that ebe was not legitimate-
ly married to the plaintiff, that her
children were bastards and she
should no longer live with him.
The next day,, according to the de.
position entered•in court, Rev. Mr.
l)eajardina went to Pichette's house
and in the presence of wife, husband
and several strangers, used insult
ing language to the plaintiff, told,
him that the children were illegiti-
mate and that man and wife were
living in concubivage. In the evIttu
ing the plaintiff returned frotn his
work and found that h"i wife had
left her home and taken the chil
drew with her. It is understood
that the plaintiff was a distant rela-
tive of his wlfe'e, but it ie very re.
mote, The papers were served up-
on the reverend•gentlewan the other
morning, he being accused of bring-
ing discord into the family circle
and depriving the plaintiff of his
wife's affections,
