CHICAGO.
September wheat opened in Chi-
cago this morning at 761c. One
year ago it was quoted at $11.0r2i.
Though still depressed, the wheat
market shows a little more activity,
a slight reaction from the recent and
general depression"'Corn and oats are
looking up slightly. Provisions are
the same, or perhaps a little strong,
er and slightly higher.
AMERICAN WHEAT.
The largest crop of wheat ever re-
corded in this country was raised
last year, aggregating 611,780,000
bushels of which 36.44 per cent was
exported, showing of .22.2,915,266
bushels or more than twice the ex-
ports of 1891. The export value
of the wheat shipped out of the
country for the year ending June 30
189: was 8230,237,705. The nearest
approach to this export value was in
1871, when we shipped wheat to the
value o1$142,666,563. In that year the
average price of wheat was 89 cents.
In 1891 it was 93 cents. and during
the last year it has been $1M3 per
bushel.—American Cultivator.
EXCITEMENT IN APPLE.
. The apple shippers are Mill mak-
ing things lively:through this country,
says the Montreal Gazette, every
section where apples are grown being
invaded by scores of buyers who
have forced prices up to $1.75 per
bbl. for fruit on the trees. Some of
the Montreal shippers have contract•
ed for ,vhat they want in the vicinity
of 911.25. tine western man who re-
presents a London house is said to
have already secured 100,000 bbls.
Somebody will, no doubt; be sorry
for what they are now doing before
the winter sets in, as ,there is every
reason to believe tht the English
market is not high enongh at any
rate to make money on fruit costing
$1.75 in the orchards. The follow-
ing cable wi's received trorn London
by the agent of a large English
house :—"Be careful ; no specula-
tion ; results be disastrous ; contin-
ental crop much larger than report-
ed."
LIVE STOCK MARKET. •
Montreal, Aug. 26.—Cattle freight
rates have taken a big tumble, and
steamship agehts now find them-
selves in such a position that they
have to take almost any thing that
is offered them. Several boats have
gone out at 30 shillings ; at least this
is the reportell rate ; but if the truth
was told it would likely be found
some shippers got a email rebate
even on these figures. Only once
before was space so low out of Mout.
real, an Allan Liner sailing a few
years ago at 30 shillings insured.
The star chamber combination has
been broken, and it the markets
were not quite so bad on the other
side, shippers would no doubt re-
joice ; but there losses are so heavy
that they are note in the frame of
mind to rejoice over anything. Glas-
gow market was had again last week,
Canadians losing $6 CO $8 per head,
and the prospects are that it will be
worse this week. Even at 30 shil-
ling freight shippers say they cannot
let out.' Cattle are cheap in the
country, but those coming in are not
the right kind to send into competi-
tion with home fed cattle in the Brit•
ish markets, and the farmers will
have to take lower prices, as money
is being lost right and left and it can
hardly be expected that shippers
will continue losing money much
longer.

ut%srtl 'o tab Wheat' trade from
Bee,-n1,m is worthy of consideration :
"It can not be approximately ford -
casted that the next season's sup-
plies will not be much, if any, in ex-
cess of the requirements, which will
again be heavy, probably reaching
304,000,000 btl,t in European import-
ing countries. Under such cir-
cumstances it becomes very doubt,
ful whether after farmers have
satisfied their pressiug pecuniary
requirements, present very low
values will be sufficiently attractive,
in the absence of India as a serious
competitor, to draw the necessary
supplies from America and Russia."
This means that present low prices
are the result of large supplies, and
are not justifies} by the facts. High.
er prices are looked for whenever
supplies fall off.
