A SUMMER SURPRISE. -_On Tues- day evening of last week the men, - hers of the Dauntless Lacrosse Chub had an enjoyable time at the Grand Union hotel. They presented Mr. John Kennedy with a 'handaome easy chair on the eve of his marri- age and many were the expressions of good will towards that young gentleman in the toasts and short addresses and merry -making of the lacrosse boys. Mr. Kennedy was of course taken by surprise and de- sires to thank his lacrosse motes for their substantial expression of good will. AULD SCOTIA, -The Caledonian gathering at Lucknow this year will be held Sept. 14,under the auspices of the Sons of Scotland of Huron and Bruce. We have to thank Chief McPherson and Secretary Malcolmson for a complimentary. By the way, in .the circular we re- ceived, the Chief's name is spelled with a small "c" -Mc. A WEDNESDAY WEDDING. -John, sbn of deputy -reeve Kennedy, was married last Wednesday to Miss Hattie, daughter of Mr. J. Forden, Stapleton. Rev. W. Craig, B. D., performed the interesting ceremony. There were about 60 guests who witnessed the .happy event and showered eougratulations upon the estimable young couple. Tho pres- ents consisted of furniture, Silver- ware, cutlery, chinaware, &c., and were profuse and costly. A sump• tuoue wedding feast was served, and Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy left on the afternoon train for Detroit and other points. Straiton re- turned to Thorndale on Monday on the completion of their holiday visit. Mr. Geo. Woods on Monday assumed the duties of Assistant Principal in the Central, for the fall term. Mr. D. Morris left for home on Saturday, having received intelli- gence that hie store had been rob- bed of a large quantityof jewellery. The steamer Monarch, of the Beattie lino, was at Lee's dock on Wednesday, and the United Empire of the same compauy, on Saturday. Freight shipped to Port Arthur from this port will now pay 20cts. per ton for the privilege of passing through the Sault Canal. There was a very large attendance at the memorial service in the North street Methodist Church on Sunday evening. DEAR Sia, -I would like to ask the ratepayers of Bayfield if any of them ever go to the school to see if the work is being done properly or not ? 1 say more, how can you ex. pest a good job out of such brick as is going into it I I think it is a shame to allow the trustees of Bay- field to boodle our money away in such a manner. The brick are not half burned and how can you ex- pect a job with such material 1 I think there has been some hole and corner meetings going on. Surely this is not another mill scandal ! I suppose the trustees think anything is good enough for Bayfield. Well, I suppose it will have to do, but the people of Bayfield will have to pay for it all the same.
