Mr. 1-.l'enry Macombe, Leyland St., Blackburn, London, gang., states that tris little girl fell and struck her knee against a curbstone. The knee began to swell, became very painful and terminated in what doctors call " white swelling." She was treated by the best medical men, but grew worse. Finally ST. J &GOBS OIL was used. The contents of one bottle completely reduced the swelling, killed the pain and cured her. "a ALL BIGHT ST, JACOBS CIL DID iT." ,...4, suit for breach of proti4 o of marriage was. brought against a wq' man, and dool.de4 agaiuet her, too, at the assizes in Chester, England, 11,et week. The plaintiff was a ' young farmer named Albert Tim- mis, and he euod Miss Mary Birch, a young woman of small fortune. Tho plaintiff said that for two or three yeara Mies Birch had "kept ham dangling at her heels just to please her vanity, without the slighteet intention to redeem her promise to many him.s At the last moment she threw him over in a most heartless fashion. She said she was too good for a fel In is wife." She oleo inbiuuat0'd that he was after her money. The J oucg man said he wanted to clear his character of these aspersions. TheJudge said the young man had a coal grievance ; his letters revealed and manly abltouching uttreated. he d beenbadly The jury gave him £50 damages. [he Huron News-Reoord ' REMEDIAL LEGISLATION. $1.60 a Year -51.26 In Advance Wedue 'lay August 24th, 1891:. A "GREEN'' CANADIAN HAS THEEE OR MORE WIVES. There is in the penitentiary, Buff- alo, a young map who has made a re - reputation for himself as a gay de• ceiver which may land him in State prison for bigamy. He is John Green, a telegraph operator, and so far as kuowu has three wives, one in this city and two in Canada, with several other cities to hear from. GREEN'S DUPLICATION. The story of Gr'een's experiences is a a remarkoble one and full of duplicity. On July 2 he married Miss Haled Tripp, of Buffalo under the name of George Howard Severance. Tho girl discovered on hie linen his real name and asked him what it meant, and then he confessed that his name was John Green and that he had been married under an assumed name. She de• mended that he marry her under his real name and he did so, and then went to live with her at her parents' home. She is s well known young lady here and highly thought of. Green stayed with her for two days and then disap- peared. She appealed to the police, and since then they have been looking for hits. Ho was found on Tuesday in Albany, brought back to this city and trie 1 for deserting his wife, and on this charge was convicted and sentenced to the penitentiary for three months. HIS RECORD LOOKED UP. In the meantime the police have not been idle, and have gathered evidence enough, it is said, to send the young man to State prison for a tern of years. They have learned that before coming to Buffalo Green worked 'in London, Kingston and Toronto, and that he was quite a lady's man in those places. In Toronto he pretended to fall in love with a young lady well known in the city. Her parents objected to his attentions and told hire so. The result was an elopement, and when the runaway couple returned they wero forgiven. They had only been gone over night and the next day Green Th% nnderljgned baring rinrchased the old established moat businose of Mr. Arthur Conch, begs to inform the public that ho will continue it as it han heretofore been harried on. r•lloats of all kinds in season. O'Beirne, editor of the Strat- ford Beacon, with a writ claiming $1,000 damages for i•eferiug to him as a "bounty jumper." -John Moore, a farmer, of Mor- rie, who has been spending holidays in Winnipeg. returned home last week to find that his wife bad elop- ed with another farmer and taken with her all the stock and imple- ments. -The word "Calico" has a queer origin. Many centuries ago the first monarch of the Province of Malabar gave to one of hie chiefs, ae a reward for distinguished ser- vices, hie sword and all the land within the limit of which a cock crowing at a certain temple could be heard. From this circumstances the little town which grew up in the centre of this territory was call- ed Calicoda, or the "cock crowing." Afterwards it was called Calicut, and from this place the first cotton goods were imported into England, bearing the name calico. IT HAS NO TERRORS FOR HON. JOE MARTIN, OF 1LANITOBA, Hon. Joe Martin, ex•attorney• general of Manitoba, was in Toronto on Saturday on his home from at- tendance before the privy council in regard to the Manitoba school law appeal; He landed at Now York on Thursday and went on from Toronto Saturday night. The Toronto News published the follow- ing view with him, giving his views inter on the question of remedial legislation "I suppose you have seen where the French-Canadiana demand re• medial legislation from the Dom 101010n government? "They are welcome to it," and Mr. Martin laughed a quiet and sereno laugh, which betokened that he didn't care. "What would be °the effect on Manitoba 7" pursued the News man. "It would have no effect," and he laughed again. "You see the Dominion has not power to pass any such remedial legislation." "And if it had 7" "Manitoba would simply ignore it. We intend to stand by the rights under which we became s- proviace of this Dominion. Re medial legislation by the Dominion. government would simply be null, and Manitoba would pay no atten- tion to it.. "Then you consider the separate school question definitely settled 7 "I do. There is only one way in which any Dominion legislation could affect us. There are curtain lauds set aside in the province by the Dominion for eduactional pur- poses, and I see it is suggested that they apportion part of these for the support of separate schools in Man- itoba. Still," and for the third time the man from Manitoba with the iron determination laughed, "it would not make much differer- ence." "Why 1" "Simply because our schools have never received any benefit what- ever from them 7" 'Have none of the lands ever been sold 7". "Yes ; again lie laughed, "hut that is all -the good it did us. The tact of the matter is t hose school lands have been so grossly misman aged that they. are absolutely of no use to our schools. They have been sold forfar less than their vslue; they have boon sold always at the wrong time, when there was no demand for them, and they have been squatted upon indiscriminately. Then the squatters have bought them from the Dominion govormnent for a mere song, and the province con• sequently has beenzgo..i:ng nothing toward° its public schools. Pos- sibly, if part of them wore set aside for separate school purposes, they might bo better managed." "If the Dominion govormnent did that, it might cause trouble in Ontario," suggested the reporter. "I hardly think myself," said Mr. Martin,' `that the Dominioi world do it, because it would bo a beach ofthe terms under r or which Manitoba become. a province of Canada, but still that is the only way the federal parliament can now interfere in our school matters." "Thou you have no hesitation in publicly saying that you do not think the Dominion has the right to pass any remedial Legislation 7" "It has no power to enforce re- medial legislation if did pans it ; the decisirn of the privy council nettles that. • LEFT TORONTO FOR PARTS UNKNOWN. It has transpired, however, that from Toronto he wont to Kingston, where he went to work in the office of the G. N. W. He had not been there more than a week when ho began to pay attentions to a young girl who worked in one of the stores there, and in a few days he prevailed upon her to marry him. In this naso the honeymoon lasted longer than usual with him and be remained with his wife for over a a week. Then he disappear ed as,he had in Toronto, and as he did later on in this city. Tho police have made thoir investiga- tions very thoroughly, and are satisfied that Green has at least HALF A DOZAN 'WIVES waiting him invarious parte of the country. They refuse to make publicthe!names of his victims,on the ground that they are respectable girls and the notoriety of their desertion would be too much for them to bear. Gre n's brother has written to the police to say that his brother has been the disgrace of the family, and that if his record in Canada is looked into very carefully it will be found to bo rather shady. The experiment which Messrs. Tuck- ett & Son entered upon when they cam- mensed to make their "Myrtle Navy" tobacco was this : to give the public a tobacco of the very finest V irglnia leaf at the smallest possible margin beyond i' ■ actual cost, in the hope that it would be so extensively bought ae to remunerate them. Ry the end of three years the demand for it had grown so much as to give assurance that the auccess of the experiment was within reach. The de- mand for it to day is more than ten times greater then it was then and it is still increasing.
