Mr. Lotlt of St. Marys, and niece, Mise Lindsay of Clinton, were in Exeter last week on their way to St. Mary's from a trip north. —Brussels and Seaforth Gun Clubs had a mstch the other day. The score stood 81, 89, in favor of Seaforth. ' —425 went from Mits!hell to Goderich on the recent excursion. A. correspondent charges the I-Iurons with slugging the Mitchell lacrosse team. —Messrs. Petty, T. Ballentine, W. Shillinglaw and J. Shepherd have shipped away a lot of fine stock from Hensall during the past few weela. --The farmers are busy threshing the fall wheat, in the vicinity of Brussels, to snake room for spring grain and report the yield from 20 to 30 bushels per acre. --Robert Govenlock's second daughter, Miss. Mary E., near r11ea- forth, was married on Wednesday last to Rev. 1'. A. Cozens, of Bol, wood, Wellington County, —R. D. Young, of Hensall, has sold his interest in the business of Coad, Rennie & Young, to :lir. Rennie. Mr. Coad iutends going to the Northwest in the fall. —Mr. John E. McDonell, of Hen- sall, was taken suddenly ill on Sun- day evening last and for a time his life was despaired of. He rallied, however. Cholera morbus was the cause, —11Ir. The new proprietor is alive to the wants of the times. •--Geo. Foot, sr., a pioneer aged 78 yearn, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Geo. Anderson, Bayfield Road, on Saturday. He was a na• tive of Scotland. The interment took place at I3aird's cemetery. —Geo. Allan, nephew of Win. Allen, of Hullett, aged 21 years, was kicked on the temple while attempting to hitch a horse and died four hours after. His former home was at Newmarket. —W. Robertson, who left Wing- han short time ago for Iowa, has re- turned. He reports that there are thousands of roan unable to find en1• pioyment in that part of the coun- try where he was. --The two sons of Rev.J,E. Howell, who were drowned at Goderich were buried at Belleville. Mrs. Howell is a native of Belleville, being the sister of Mr. J. C. Jamieson, presi- dent of The Intolligencer Printing and Publishing Company. — At a recent meeting of the McKillop Mutual Fire Ineurence, Company 117 applications for membership were accepted. These covereti insurances to the amout of $186,000. This old •and reliable company still remains a favorite with the public. —Mr. James, H. McRoberts, of Lucan, gave a party on Wednesday evening in honor of the 25th anni- versary of his marriage. Seventy• five invited guests partook of Mr. and Mrs. McRoberts' hospitality, and the presents on the occasion were both costly and numerous. —Mr. Gager, of Lebaron, Perth county, met with a very myster, lova accident a few days ago. He went to his stable to attend his horses and was afterwards fonnd by Itis fornily lying under one of the animals. He was unconscious and very badly tramped about the head and body. He cannot ex, plain how he got there. —While Yeo. Nowack was as• sisting at a threshing near Wart- burg, Perth county, on Friday after. noon he slipped and fell from a straw stack, a distance of 25 feet. He came dawn with tremendous force, on the hard ground. The blood poured out of his eears and mouth. It was thonght that he could not live, but it is now thought he may recover. —Will in ut Christopher r1 i k in, one of the oldest residents of Perth county, died at Milverton on Wed nesday. He was 9$ years Of 'age. —Rev. Prof. Williams, of Huron College, London, has decided to ac- cept the rectorship of St. James' church, Stratford. IIe will enter upon his pastorate on October 1. —The Rev, Geo. W. Racily was taken so unwell Sunday afternoon that while conducting service in St. John's English Church, Harriets- ville, he had to leave off. — Mr. William Kynoeh, who is visiting in Galt, will soon return to Cuba. He bets had a lot of machinery made in Galt for use in his sugar, euterprise. —Smith MoLeans buildings and 70 tone of hay were consumed by fire from lightning, in Aelitield, last Tuesday.. There was no• insurance —Mrs. Wm. H. Ryan, of Elgin field,one of the pioneered Biddulph, was conveyed to -her Lase resting place on Wednesday afternoon,in St. James,' Church of England oemetery at Lucau. —Mrs. Peter Grant, of Kippen, died Thusday evening last. For some years Mrs. Grant has not ben strong, and a severe attack of grip last winter so shattered her nervous system as to make her recovery im• possible. — George B.ott, of Zorra, has a stem of the Mummy variety of pea which had 34 pods containing 125 peas on it. He has four acres of this kind of pea, and it will be an extra large crop. —Mr. John White, of the con. concussion, Tuckersmith has pur- chased the farm known as the David Elcoat farts, for the 8uui of $5,700. He has secured a good fail'. — Duriig the progress of the thunder storm which passed riser St. Marys and district Thueday after- noon, 9th inst., Dingwall McKay, of the 11th line of Fast Zorra, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. - 11c1Cnight, of Stratford, wife of the gallant Lieut. Col. of the 28th Batt., has received leave of absence for three weeks with her two youngest daughters. Miss Mabel is with old acquaintances in Ooderieh. —Some evil disposed persons broke several panes of glass in Coleman's office windows in Sea - forth on Saturday eyening, by throwing stones through them. A reward of $25 ' e ,,. for the guilty parties —A slick individual has been going through Essex county agrees ing with the farmers to handle their butter at 26 cents a Ib. The agreement turns out to be a pro% missory note for $260.° —Cattle dealer T. F. Case of Sea - forth had a valuable driving horse seriously injured by getting its foot in a hole in a Tuckersmith bridge. It will be some months before the leg ie heeled up, and it is rot un. likely that there will be claim for damages aginst the Council. —During a recent thunder storm Dingwall McKay, aged seventy years, a farmer living in the town - hip. of East Zorra, was struck and instantly killed. He was indthe act of closing his gate when the fatal occident occurred. A son who was. a short distance off discovered his father lying on the ground. Death was instantaneous. Mr. Larke, who lives in the same township had the roof of two of his barns blown off. —A cow belonging to Mr. Thompson, of Guelph, died. For two weeks she had been very sick and lost in flesh. The peculiar circumstances of the cow's death caused the owner to.. make an investigation, which &-cowed, on the animal being opened, - that the stomach contained a snake over three feet long. The snake was dead when the cow was opened. It is supposed that the cow swallowed the snake while drinking water. —Never was there such a tourist invasion of Ireland as there is this season. In no previous seasons have the beauties of Irish scorer) attracted such enormous numbers of strangers as now. They are to bo found all over Ireland, from the Giant's Causeway in the north to the lovely Killarney Lakes in the south. The American element is predominant at present in the south and west, and the hotelkeepers are reaping a rich harvest. The natur- al attractions of Erin require only to be shown to be thoroughly ap- preciated by a wealthy class of foreigners, who have hitherto given their patronage to Swiss, French or Italian districts—all, no doubt, very lovely, but hardly rivalling Ireland in the splendor and variety of her scenery. - DEA T1 Rom ysoN,--In Goderich Township on the 20th inst., Wm.
