WORK ON THE S00 CANAL.
MR. RYAN, THE CONTRACTOR, TALKS
ABOUT ITS PP.OGRESS,
Mr. Hugh Pyan, contractor for
the Sault Ste, Marie conal, was in
the city the other day, and in con-
versation with the representative of
the Gazette, said that the work on
the canal was progressing very
favorably ; an immense amount of
stone was now on the ground, and
the construction of the works could
soon be commenced. As to the ex•
cavation, that was going on well,
and, as Mr. Ryan remarked, "There's
a pretty big bole there now."
Asked if the canal would be corn•
pleted in the time specified in the
contract, he said that it would.
"When is that 1" enquired the
Gazette.
"The contract givee us until the
31st of December, 1894," replied
Mr. Ryan. "That is two years
from the end of this year.'t
"But it could be finished much
sooner than that, filoould it not 1
How soon do you think it could be
completed?"
Mr. Ryan smiled quietly and
took a long and steady look at the
chandelier, which adorns the
rotunda of the Russell house, where
the conversation took place, before
he announced slowly, "Well, that
is a question which I would
rather not answer. I cannot
say that we might or might not du
if we were put to it."

HARDENING COPPER TO EQUAL THE
DEiT STEEL -ENGINEERS
ASTONISHED.
About a• year ago it was announo-
that the secret of the lost art of
hardening copper and the manufac-
ture of edge tools out of it, equal,
if not superior, to the best steel,
had beer: discovered by a poor
blacksmith et Levis, Quebec, named
Allard ; but after the first publicity
given to the discovery nothing
lucre was heard about it. It now
appears, however, that Allard has
been at Ottawa and in the United
States, and that he has received
large offers to sell his secret. It is
stated that at Ottawa he exhibited
specimens of his copper tools to Sir
Abbott and Major General Herbert,
who were both astonished at their
edge and hardness, as well as
were also the engineers to wboso
inspection they wet a submitted.
Impressed with the possibility of
the discovery being utilizable for
the. armouring of war vessels,
General Herbert suggested to allow
him to harden a sheet of copper of
I inch in thickness, and to have
its powers of resistance tested at the
rifle ranges at St. Joseph de Levis,
which seems to have been lately
done, when the first bullett fired
against the sheet at at forty yards
distancewas shivered into a thou•
sand fragments, and the second was
completely flattened, but remained
imbedded in the copper, which is
slightly dinged, but did not crack
in any way. This result is regarded
as very successful.
As to the probable effect on the
carrying trade of Lake Superior of
the action of Congress. Mr. Ryan
said that when he left the Sault
there was an impression that the
trade would be much disturbed, as
carriers were very chary of' making
centracts while it was uncertaiu
whether or not President Harrison
would exercise the power given
him. He was not disposed to ex•

so that the Gazette representative
had to promise not to "interview"

that was that it was greatly to be

CABBAGE WORMS AND
SQUASH -BUGS.
A reader gives the following
remedy for the cabbage worm.
"Sift air•slacked lime over the
plants. If this is done when the
wornis first make their appearance,
they will be immediately destroyed
and the cabbages will make a sur-
prisind growth!' In late years I
have had very little trouble with
cabbage -worms. Going over the
patch once or twice during tkl•e-'head
esolif tkikis' seeel.i-ttle_buhach (Cali-
fotniasgrown insect powder) on each
plant, has always given a. quietus to
the worms and given me good heads
free from the disgusting creatures.
But there are many other dkings
that could be used with good effect.
I doubt, however, whether air -slak-
ed lime would be as effective as de-
sirable. Better use dry slak-
ed lime. Take fresh -burnt lime
and slake it with just water
enough so it will pulverize. This
is very caustic and will destroy all
soft bodied worms and slugs with
which it comes in contact. It may
be a good remedy for potato slugs,
currant•worins and many other
things. It also kills angle -worms
in the soil. For worms on plants,
sift it on the plants when they are
wet with dew, and for angle -worms,
maggots on the.epots of plants, etc.,
pour it upon the soil in solution
(with water Irr liquid manure).
Tobacco dust is also a good insect
remedy. A reader recommends salt-
petre, a tablespoonful in two gallons
of water, to be poured about the
roots of each hill of vines, as a
remedy for the squash bug. It ie a
good thing, yet I find tobacco dust,
clear or mixed with equal bulk of
bone -meal, and applied thickly
around the plants,. a pretty sure
cure for bugs and a good fertilizer
for the plants.
AMERICANS CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT.
It seemed 'impossible, he said, to
get Americans to understand that
Canada's fiscal policy was neither
dictated nor controlled by Great
Britain. "I wild give you a couple
of instances," said Mr. Ryan. "A
abort'time ago one of the largest
manufacturers of cement in the
United -States, an intelligent, educat-
od`and wealthy Ivan, offered to sell
me some cement, but said he was
afraid he could not do so, as he
could not compete with English
cement, which was admitted free
into Canada, while American
cement was charged 40 cents a
barrel duty, and it took lne a long
time to convince him that English
goode had to pay the same duty as
American in coming into Canada.
Another instance," continued Mr.
Ryan, "was of an America$ friend
recently whc' wanted to know how
much Canada co,ptributed towards
maintaining the army and navy of
Great Britain, and who would
scarcely believe me when I told
him not a cent. The great trouble
is that they do not understand how
we can be part of the British
Empire and atilt make our own
customs and other laws, and man-
age our own affairs. It is a pity
they do not," he concluded, "for it
would make us better friends, if
they did, and it would be a good
thing if more information as to the
practical independence of Canada
from Great Britain in tariff and
other matters could be disseminated
throughout the United States.

MODESTY.
"Every people has its own pec•
uliar ideas of what constitutes fem-
ale modesty," said Capt. Paul Jen-
ninge, in the St. Louis Globe -Dem-
ocrat. "In Mexico, ladies of good
repute and considerable culture
do not consider it necessary to
close the blinds, or even the door,
when taking a bath. In Japan,
people of all ages, sexes and social
conditions splash around together
in the public bath houses, naked as
a lot of South Sea Islanders. In
some Spanish-American countries a
society belle thinks nothing of ex-
posing her entire bosom. A Tur-
kish woman, rather than have her
face seen by a man, will cover it
with her skirt, even if that be her
only garment. Our American
beauties appear in assemblagee in
evening dresses that would make
the front row at a burlesque opera
blush. Modesty is inherent in
woman, but its method of express-
ion is governed bycuetom, many of
them ridiculous in the extreme."
