THE MOST USEFUL MIN.
ERAL IN THE WORLD.
If one were to ask his friends
what mineral we are most commonly
used no food, the answer's . would
probably be both varied and annus•
ing. Salt would, 'I fancy, first
suggest iteelf to many, and to time
whose training in physiology and
hygiene has not been uegleoted, no
doubt the claims ot lime and iron
and carbon, which in one form or
1 another, we use with food to build
up bone and brawn, would be
amply urged. But., after all, it is
water, for water is a mineral -a
fused mineral, You will find it
described as such, aloug with quartz
and topaz and the diamond, in
Dana's Mineralogy, or in other
treatises on stones.
We usually think of minerals as
solid things, such as metals and
rocks and jewels and various chem-
ical salts. But when we consider
the matter a little we see that aid
these thinga if melted by strong heat
are minerals still, only they are now
in a fluid instead of in a solid state.
The difference between those min
erals and water is that water gets
fluid et a lower temperature than
they du, and, like quicksilver, stays
rnelt.ed at ordinary living heat.
But in those old ice ages wnioh,
one after another, have swept now
over the Northern and now over
tile. Southern hemisphere, bringing
ruin and desolatiou, the natural
and common condition of w'.' r
was that of a solid -ice -as it large-
ly is to -day out-of-doors }a winter
when not kept fused by the stored -
up heat of the soil and rocks, or
melted, by the sun. -From iI "Ice and
Ice -making ," by T. MITCHELL
PRUDDEN, in Harper's Magazine

LINES FROM LYONS.

ONLY A HORSESHOE NAIL.
BUT ITS ABSENCE AT A CRITICAL
MOMENT WAS DISASTROUS.
Detroit Free Press; She was a
beautiful girl,-upDu whose lustrous
curls twenty summers had laid
their roses in showers of color and
efragranoe, and upon whose fair
shoulders the decree of fashion had
placed a pair of suspenders..

not yet got themselves upon this
fad, they should at once look up

She was radiant in her love•
liness, and the young man who eat
beside her when the shadows
of the evening fell was as happy as
she was beautiful,
It was an iridescent combinat-
ion.
He had proposed and been accept-
ed and he had just concluded a
wild, impulsive embrace that now
was tapering off gradually in a
tender, on earmed hug as lingering
as a case of grip in a hard win•
ter.
"George," she muttered, "will
you do me a favor?"
"A million !" ho exclaimed, with
tropical luxuriance ; "a million
tinges a million daring,"
"One is enough, deary," she said,
with a soft little smile of joyous
contentment.
"What is it, darling?" he whis-
pered, drawing her closer to him.
"Will you lend me a horseshoe
nail? she lisped, blushingly. "We.
have busted my galluses,
And George's groat heart yearned
and broke then, for he had come
to the trysting place without a
horseshoe nail,
